ANNUAL REPORT

j:\academics\career development reporting\2015-2016 career development annual report.docx

The goal of the Career Development office is to empower students and alumni to identify and attain their career goals. The office has established the following departmental objectives to help students and alumni in reaching their goals:

To assist students and alumni in their individual career planning through one on one appointments and workshops, the use of assessment tools (Strong Interest Inventory, Myers Briggs), and the availability of appropriate career and graduate school resources.

To help alleviate anxiety associated with obtaining employment by providing students with a network of individuals (including alumni) working in their respective fields who are willing to provide information and guidance to students

To identify companies with openings and obtain their participation in on-campus and Rochester area career days, interviewing and recruitment events.

To encourage students to participate (volunteer/intern/work) in organizations with and beyond the Roberts community during their college years.

To assist student placement by: providing on-campus career days and career related workshops maintaining current job and internship listings; encouraging students to network with alumni and other professionals; and preparing students to attend on-campus and Rochester area college events.

To strengthen employer relations within the Rochester community.

To act as a resource for faculty members for internship contacts, career related materials for classes (i.e. first year seminar, internship prep) or information relating to their fields of expertise.

It is with these objectives in mind that we present to you the Career Development Annual Report for the 2015– 2016 academic year. Mary Flaherty Director of Career Development Kathleen D. Raniewicz Career Development Specialist Kathy Tesavis Coordinator of Career Development

Services and Resources

Job Recruitment Day – Our annual job fair was held in March 2016 with 61 organizations

participating. Employers included businesses, not for profits, hospital, human service

organizations and local school districts.

Technology – The Career Development website provides a variety of resources for students

and alumni. This includes resources for cover letter/resume writing, interviewing skills, job

search strategies as well as links to career related sites and job postings.

In August 2014, Career Development partnered with CSO to offer a more efficient and useful

site that is a rich resource for job and internship postings, a database of alumni mentors, and a

tool for collecting institutional data concerning experiential learning and organizational

partners.

This site, Roberts Career Connect, allows us to better track job and internship postings, as well

as employer and student usage. All job and internship postings are “live” in Roberts Career

Connect and kept current. To date 1,337 employers from throughout the US have registered

and posted jobs on the Roberts Career Connect site. During the 2015-2016 academic year,

1,986 jobs and internships were posted. Roberts Career Connect has been designed for use by

our staff to track all internship placements using its Report a Hire feature. Beginning in July

2016, all RWC undergraduates when registering for their internships/field experiences will be

asked to complete an online form in the system that will allow for better tracking by the Career

Development office and the college.

Roberts My Plan – www.roberts.myplan.com

My plan allows students to make informed decisions regarding their education and career

options. This site not only includes career assessments (MBTI, Strong Interest Inventory) but a

data base of over 900 careers, video libraries, major databases and graduate school searches. In

the first year of implementation of this resource, 245 students have utilized the Roberts My

Plan site.

Alumni Mentoring Program – Career Development and Alumni Relations partnered to

establish the Alumni Mentoring Program. Over 100 alumni mentors are currently registered

and available to provide career assistance (networking, informational interviewing, and

internships) as well as panel presentations for classes and clubs. The goal of this program is to

bring together RWC students and alumni to encourage connections and networking as it relates

to career/life goals. This database of alumni mentors is available on the Roberts Career

Connect site.
