FROM T HE DES K OF THE CEO

As we looked back on the past 30 years building with you in our community, the answer is clear. You have faithfully built a strong foundation partnering with Habitat for Humanity to make the dream of homeownership a reality for more than 200 families who came to us seeking a safe, stable, healthy and affordable place to raise their children. And the impact you have made alongside Habitat’s ministry is not just through building homes, but through building a stronger community together and building hope for our homeowners and their children’s futures.

This year we celebrated milestones and reflected on past accomplishments where Habitat and our partners have been able to build on faith, build up families, and build community together. These milestones and accomplishments were possible because of your support and the hard work of the families we serve. We launched a new event to help build stronger leadership within area churches; we expanded our service area to two neighboring counties; we began building a new ReStore; and we witnessed our first homeowner Cecilia Thomas pass the keys to our 200th homeowner Mia Stevenson.

Thanks to your support we can celebrate the legacy of the past three decades and look forward to the future successes in the decades to come. That future is built upon the strong foundation you helped lay. You are making an impact far beyond building a home for a family. You are empowering them to build a better future for their children. You are inspiring and supporting generational change. This change becomes more evident each day as we hear stories from homeowners who have gone on to earn bachelor’s or even master’s degrees, advance their careers, help pay for their children’s college educations, and pay off their mortgages early thanks to the stability and affordability of their Habitat homes.

Even with all this success, the need for affordable homeownership in our community is greater than ever. Every month, about 75 families reach out to Habitat seeking the opportunity to change their lives and the lives of their children. This desire in hundreds of families hoping for a better future through Habitat homeownership is growing because of the successes you’ve helped build: stable families; stronger communities; and hope for the future.

Thank you again for your support in building on faith, building up families and building community together with Habitat for Humanity. We look forward to partnering with you again to impact the lives of more families than ever before.

We frequently ask the question, “What will YOU build?”

In His service,

Justin Berger | CEO

FIRST BUILD ON FAITH EVENTHabitat successfully hosted its first Build on Faith event in February 2017 with more than 350 regional church and ministry leaders in attendance for the one-day interactive conference, which featured Bill Hybels and other nationally-known speakers in person at the Parkview Mirro Center.

RESTORE CAPITAL CAMPAIGNHabitat for Humanity broke ground on the new ReStore location at 4747 Lima Road in June.

The Habitat for Humanity ReStore is a nonprofit home improvement store and donation center selling new and gently used items to the public at discounted prices. Proceeds from sales directly support Habitat’s efforts to build homes, communities and hope.

Construction on the new location is currently underway, and Habitat for Humanity expects to open the new 27,000 square foot location in Spring 2018.

The $4.5 million project has 75 percent more floor space than the current location, increases the ReStore’s visibility 500 percent and is estimated to increase sales revenue by at least 150 percent within five years. A capital campaign is currently underway to fund the new ReStore, and Habitat has reached 47 percent of the $4.5 million goal.

Mia Stevenson was determined to become a first-time homeowner.

When the future 200th Habitat homeowner was accepted into the program, she knew she had about two years to complete all the requirements. But several months into the program, she found out she was going to have her second child.

“I knew I was going to have to get all my hours done fast before the new baby came,” she said.

Mia worked hard to complete the hundreds of hours of sweat equity and sustainable homeownership classes required for her to build her home in 2017. She was working construction well into her seventh month of pregnancy. And she even got some of her last sweat equity hours in at the Restore two days before she went into labor.

She said there is something special about owning her own home in the Habitat community that living in an apartment doesn’t provide for her family.

“You build relationships with all the families going through the program with you,” she said. “And watching my children play in our yard...the thought of that makes me really excited.”

Build Community Together On June 29, 2017, 147 volunteers joined Habitat for Humanity of Greater Fort Wayne at I&M Plaza to help begin construction on our 200th home for a hardworking family. Stability was hard to come by for Cecilia Thomas in the late 1980s.

The hardworking divorced mom was raising three daughters on her own. And on her single income from Magnavox, she was just getting by with enough to pay the rent and feed her girls.

Her family had become accustomed to moving every few years when rent would go up. Cecilia said before she found Habitat for Humanity, the family moved at least six times.

But the stability she found through homeownership changed all that.

Cecilia became the first Habitat homeowner in Allen County in 1987. She paid off her mortgage several years ago and plans to remain in the home that provided a strong foundation for her family over the past 30 years.

She said her Habitat home allowed her to keep her girls in the same schools as they grew. And she credits the fact that two of her three daughters graduated from college to that constancy of home in their lives.

“My youngest told me one day, ‘Mom, I want to thank you for keeping us in one place,’” Cecilia said. “If it hadn’t been for Habitat, I probably would have kept renting and moving around.”

Lisa Stiles and her 16-year-old daughter Brittany had been living in a first-floor apartment in Canterbury Green.

With neighbors upstairs and on each side, it wasn’t always peaceful. And Lisa had to carry Brittany, who has cerebral palsy, in and out of the apartment, because the narrow hallways wouldn’t accommodate her wheelchair.

Lisa and Brittany finally received the keys to their new home in July. The single-story ranch is wheelchair accessible and was fitted with a special shower for Brittany.

Lisa said she was looking forward to finally having a quiet space of their own—where neighbors are close but not overhead, and she can easily get Brittany in, out and around the home.

“This house and everything I’ve done is all about her,” she said.

Aye Wah and her husband Thoo Lay moved into a two-bedroom apartment on the southeast side of Fort Wayne five years ago. At the time they had two small children, and it was just enough space for the young family.

But Aye Wah said she told herself years ago after going through the work of packing up belongings and moving small children, “If I move again, I will buy a house.”

Since then, the family has grown to four children—two girls, ages 9 and 8, and two boys, 5 and 2. And in addition to the cramped conditions of six people living in a two-bedroom apartment, there was no good place for the children to play safely outside.

When the family recently received the keys to their new two-story, three-bedroom home in Fuller’s Landing, Aye Wah and Thoo Lay spoke about the fear they experienced moving to America as refugees from Burma. They didn’t know if they would even be able to afford food or clothing, let alone have a safe place to live.

But the family has come a long way since those first years in America, and they have worked hard to become first-time homeowners. They said they are grateful to Habitat and all the volunteers who helped make it possible for them to buy a new home in a safe community where they can raise their children.
