A Year of ProgressIn 2016, we made it a priority to embrace the transitions taking place. Although change can be scary and uncertain, transitions offer opportunity and promise for the future. From new people to new buildings to new ways of delivering healthcare, 2016 has been quite a year, and we look forward to what the future has in store.

In November, Dee Vandeventer announced her retirement from the Foundation after leading so many important accomplishments. This presented an opportunity to advance a young leader in the organization, and Mike Lind accepted the challenge.

Also in November, the Foundation was instrumental in the opening of UnityPoint Health – Prairie Parkway in Cedar Falls. This new and innovative facility offers healthcare delivery in a different way, focusing on wellness and the prevention, early detection and treatment of disease, all while working to be coordinated, convenient and accessible.

Finally, the For Allen For You capital campaign officially went public in 2016. This comprehensive campaign, which highlights three vital initiatives, will greatly expand Allen’s impact on healthcare and healthcare education in Northeast Iowa.

We hope you will agree that this is an exciting time of transition for our organization, and we appreciate your continued support as we grow and evolve with healthcare.

Sincerely,

UnityPoint Health – Waterloo Launches Its Largest Capital Campaign Ever

Celebrates Exceeding Halfway Point of $19.8 Million Goal

UnityPoint Health – Waterloo leaders and supporters kicked off the public phase of its $19.8 million For Allen For You capital campaign—the largest capital campaign in its history—during a pep rally-style gathering in September of 2016.

The campaign will help fund three distinctive projects totaling $48.8 million overall to address the healthcare and healthcare education needs of the Cedar Valley. Lead gifts and commitments from major donors have given the campaign a substantial start with more than half of the $19.8 million goal already raised to date.

“Our heartfelt appreciation goes out to the estate of Edward W. Jesse Jr., Pauline Barrett, the estate of Doris Travis, the R.J. McElroy Trust and our many donors for their generous gifts which have pushed us over the halfway milestone of our $19.8 million goal,” said Mike Christiason, For Allen For You campaign co-chair.

“Our campaign volunteers look forward to meeting with more supporters in the community and sharing how these three projects will enhance the health and lives of Cedar Valley community members.”

Mike Christiason, Campaign Co-Chair

The three projects funded by the For Allen For You campaign are:

• UnityPoint Health – Prairie Parkway, a new comprehensive outpatient medical home in Cedar Falls, focusing on wellness, prevention and early detection of disease.

• Allen College – Initiatives include building renovations, medical education program expansions and additional endowed scholarship support for students.

• UnityPoint Health – Allen Hospital initiatives include birthing center, neonatal intensive care unit and pediatrics unit renovations and expansion.

Prairie Parkway

Prairie Parkway, a new 90,000–square-foot comprehensive outpatient facility in Cedar Falls, will function as a consolidated, patient-centered medical home for the whole family.

“Our approach is an innovative healthcare delivery model,” said Pam Delagardelle, president and CEO of UnityPoint Health – Waterloo. “We’re delivering exactly what the community told us they were looking for to meet their healthcare needs: location, hours and services. Their comments guided us every step of the way.”

The campus provides the infrastructure for UnityPoint Health – Waterloo’s coordinated approach to primary care for all stages of life, from obstetrics and pediatrics through family medicine and internal medicine. Located in the area’s fastest growing retail center, the facility was designed with services and amenities to make it simple and efficient for patients to be seen for all of their primary care needs under one roof.

“Our physician-led team approach empowers patients to stay healthy and our care coordinators make it easier and more convenient for patients to get and stay healthy,” said Daniel Glascock, MD, vice president/regional medical director, UnityPoint Clinic. “No longer will patients need to travel to multiple locations to see multiple providers in the metro area.”

The campaign aims to raise $4 million of the overall $30 million cost for the Prairie Parkway project. The estate of Doris Travis gifted more than $960,000 to jump-start this portion of the campaign.

“Doris was a grateful patient of Allen Hospital, and we are honored that she chose to give back in this way,” said Glascock. “We will be forever grateful to her and her family.”

Allen College Initiatives

The For Allen For You campaign will raise $8.8 million for four Allen College initiatives:

• $3.3 million to acquire, renovate and equip a rehabilitation sciences building to provide office, classroom and laboratory space for a new occupational therapy program and future physical therapy program.

• $3 million for endowed scholarships to support nursing and health sciences students. The average Allen College undergraduate debt load is nearly $30,000.

• $1.75 million to renovate Alumni Hall, providing a state-of-the-art nursing simulation laboratory and classrooms and a medical lab sciences simulation lab.

• $750,000 will go toward renovating classrooms and office space in Gerard Hall, providing upgraded technology to classrooms and offices that haven’t been renovated since the building opened in 1995.

Lead donors to Allen College initiatives include the estate of Edward W. Jesse Jr., a Jesup-area farmer who donated $3.1 million to create an endowed fund to provide scholarships for Allen College students; R.J. McElroy Trust, which has donated $600,000 toward the purchase of McElroy Hall from UNI and its renovations for rehabilitation sciences programs; Mark Baldwin and the Waschek family, who contributed $325,000 to establish the M. Sue Waschek Baldwin Medical Lab Science Endowment; and Ginny and Mike McBride, who have added $159,500 to the Virgina Henniges McBride Scholarship as well as an additional $60,000 gift toward tech upgrades at McBride Auditorium.

“Allen College has a reputation for graduating well-qualified students who find great success in their careers. This success has led to increased enrollment. It is time to continue to invest in our students and provide more opportunities for healthcare education in Iowa. By upgrading our facilities and increasing education programs and degree options, we can meet the demand of our growing enrollment.”

Dr. Jerry Durham, Chancellor, Allen College

Allen Hospital Birthing Center, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Pediatrics Unit Initiatives

Allen Hospital is seeing an increase in the number of multiple births. On most days, beds are full in the birthing center, which recently set a decade-record for births. Allen’s Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) now provides 24/7 coverage and a higher level of care.

To meet those needs and anticipated demand created by a new OB-GYN clinic at Prairie Parkway, Allen will:

• Increase the number of labor, delivery, recovery and postpartum rooms in the birthing center from 12 to 18, allowing for deliveries in every room.

• Relocate the NICU to the second floor and expand the number of private rooms from four to 10, four of which can accommodate the rising number of multiple births.

• Relocate the pediatrics unit to the second floor, across from the NICU, providing larger rooms for families staying with sick children.

The campaign’s goal for this portion of the project is to raise $7 million toward the projected cost of $10 million.

“The Allen NICU has been providing an increased level of neonatal care for the past five years,” said Dr. Pankaj Nagaraj, medical director, Allen Hospital Department of Pediatrics and Neonatology. “This has resulted in a rising number of patient days, more serious medical issues and more inpatient transfers from neighboring facilities.”

Dr. Nagaraj adds that premature babies who were once transferred to Iowa City or Cedar Rapids are now staying and thriving at Allen Hospital. “In order to maintain this new level of care and expertise, we must expand our NICU.”

The NICU will be named for Pauline Barrett, thanks to her $1.5 million gift. The Henry B. Allen Family Foundation has pledged $500,000 toward this portion of the campaign.

To learn more about the For Allen For You campaign, please call the Allen Foundation at 319-235-3960 or visit ForAllenForYou.com.

“By giving to the Allen campaign, whether it be for the hospital or the college, you would be increasing the quality of care for the community,” said Stewart Bagley, Allen Hospital employee. “Remember, you are a part of this community and at some point, you or a family member will need their services.”

Allen Foundation Establishes Littlest Angel Fund to Remember our Tiniest Patients

Landon’s Story

When I found out my husband and I were pregnant with our son, Landon, I had some anxiety as I’d had two miscarriages previously. Once we made it past that magic 12-week mark, much of the concern we felt was gone.

Everyone, from our midwife to our parents, believed with us that this pregnancy was not like before and this time was “the one.” All seemed well; Landon’s heartbeat was strong, he was moving plenty and there were no concerns.

The day after my 24-week appointment, I wasn’t feeling well. I continued to work through the pain until the most obvious sign of concern for most pregnant women happened. I was bleeding. I called Adam before being evaluated and learning that the pain was contractions. I was already dilated.

The team at Allen worked with me from the second I arrived, making every attempt to stop my contractions, but it was not meant to be. Landon was born at 24 ½ weeks at 3:56 pm on September 10, 2014.

He weighed 1 pound 13.5 ounces, and was 13½ inches long. The neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) team took him right away in an attempt to stabilize him while another team worked to stabilize me.

In about an hour’s time, Landon’s doctor came to us with the news no parent wants to hear. It was time to let Landon go.

Much of that day is still a blur to me. That night was my one and only night with my baby boy. The only night I would have to hold him in my arms. I had to make one night last me a lifetime.

Weeks later, we met with Landon’s doctor. Being able to talk about what happened in person – once we’d had some time to process the physical and emotional trauma we’d experienced – was invaluable.

When we learned we were pregnant with Landon’s little brother, we were excited, but also terrified. Once again we were wrapped in care and monitored almost weekly.

Almost exactly one year later, I once again went into labor. This time was only two days before my due date. Two of the nurses present for Landon’s birth were with us as we welcomed a healthy, 7 pound, 10 ounces and 20 inches long, Archer at 6:04 pm. It was a healing moment for Adam and me, and I think it was for those nurses as well. After having two children born at Allen Hospital, one who died and one who lived, I saw that Landon was treated no different than Archer.

In memory of Landon, we have established the Littlest Angel Fund. The purpose of the fund is to honor and remember all of the littlest angels due to stillbirth, miscarriage or infant death. Gifts received toward the fund will be used to

provide comfort care packages for parents. Littlest angel names and birthdays will be engraved on a special plaque for those contributing $500 or more. This is our way to remember Landon and the many other littlest angels, while also honoring the Allen team. To learn more or to donate, please call 319-235-3960.

Allen Associates Reach 100% Donation Participation Toward For Allen For You Campaign

Last fall, the For Allen For You capital campaign received a special gift from associates of UnityPoint Health – Allen Hospital, Allen College and the Allen Foundation. The gift totaled a generous amount of nearly $800,000, with team members continuing to contribute to that total today. Equally impressive was the 100 percent participation of Allen associates who contributed personally or had a gift given in their honor by another employee.

“When we first met as an employee committee over a year ago, we agreed that our goal should be for every associate to give,” commented Allen employee, Kim French, at the presentation.

The associates’ gift was presented at a public campaign kickoff event in late September. Three campaign leaders—who had vowed to dye their hair in campaign colors should associate participation reach the 100 percent goal—were present to accept the donation.

Pam Delagardelle, president and CEO of UnityPoint Health – Waterloo; Dr. Jerry Durham, Allen College Chancellor; and Dee Vandeventer, former Allen Foundation chief development officer, fulfilled their promises over a two-day period in late October as the trio delivered thank-you treats to associates while donning their new hairdos.

“We felt it was important to lead by example,” shared Steve Cusher, an Allen associate who took a lead role in encouraging other employees to give. “I can’t express the amount of pride I have in working for an organization with so many associates that have the same vision of wanting to provide the best healthcare to our community.”

Thank you to Steve Cusher, Denise Hanson, Jean Firman and the many others who gave their time to reach this lofty goal and to the hundreds of Allen employees who gave from their personal finances.

UnityPoint Hospice Team Helps a Patient Plan Her Wedding

The love story began when Danette was only 3 years old and Kavin was 5.

Many years later, we found Danette smiling as she married her long-time soulmate, Kavin. Much like a traditional wedding, a lot of planning had come before this day. But Danette and Kavin faced one obstacle that was not so traditional: Danette was a UnityPoint Hospice patient and time was a considerable concern.

Due to Danette’s illness, simply visiting the courthouse and applying for a wedding license was a challenge. However, thanks to the help of the UnityPoint Hospice team, Danette and Kavin were able to check off each task on their wedding to-do list, from the license all the way to a beautiful tiara.

Hospice staff called around and brought a notary to Danette on a Saturday morning to assist with all of the paperwork necessary to move the wedding license along. Now it was time for the planning. The happy couple had already set a date for their wedding to be held at home. Even the beautiful, white wedding dress was in hand.

All that was left were the little details that made it truly special, and the Hospice team was ready and willing.

Red roses, the bride-to-be’s favorite, were ordered. A white wedding cake was arranged at the request of the couple. Food was coordinated and, to make things extra special, Development Coordinator Joyce Coil even found a tiara for Danette to wear.

“Danette and Kavin had very small and simple wishes, and, as a team, we wanted to make them come true to make their day extra memorable. Thanks to the generosity of a local bridal store, we were able to give Danette a beautiful tiara – a perfect finishing touch on a very special wedding,” says Joyce Coil.

The flowers, food, cake, tiara and every other small item purchased to offer a special experience for Danette and Kavin were all covered, thanks to donors to the G.I.F.T. Fund. The Giving it Forward

Together (G.I.F.T.) Fund was created to grant end-of-life wishes for UnityPoint Hospice patients and their families.

As the wedding day approached, Danette’s health faded. Many of those involved were concerned that a wedding was not possible. But Kavin never gave up faith. He told the Hospice nurses, “We need to believe in prayer. Danette will wake up.” And she did.

Despite all of the detailed preparation and support, Danette and Kavin still had one more challenge to overcome. A judge would need to waive the three-day waiting period for their wedding license to ensure Kavin and Danette would have the license in time for the wedding. Once again, the UnityPoint Hospice team stepped up and the waiting period was waived.

Kavin’s father performed the ceremony with family and friends in attendance. Kavin was extremely grateful for the exceptional care and support that UnityPoint Hospice had provided for “people they didn’t even know a month ago.”

A few weeks later, Danette passed away. Although saddened with the loss, the Hospice staff took comfort and pride in knowing they had played a part in facilitating some special moments for Danette and Kavin.

Allen CollegeReceives $3.1 Million Gift

As 2016 came to a close, Allen College announced the largest donor gift in the history of the nursing and health sciences education institution. The estate of Edward W. Jesse Jr., a Jesup-area farmer, donated $3.1 million to create an endowed fund to provide scholarships for Allen College students.

The gift goes toward the Allen College initiatives of the For Allen For You campaign.

Jesse died in 2013 at the age of 78. He was a longtime farmer in Black Hawk and Buchanan counties and lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church. In 2008, Jesse also donated land for the planned UnityPoint Clinic in Jesup. His gifts to Allen total nearly $3.26 million.

Jesse’s nephew, Brad Jesse, is also an area farmer. He shared that Edward Jesse’s father, Edward Jesse Sr., had also given generously to Allen. The family connection only grew as Jesse Jr.’s sister (Margaret Brust), two nieces (Margaret Jean Russell and Ramona Jesse) and one grandniece (Alissa Barron) each graduated from Allen College.

The Edward W. Jesse Estate Endowed Scholarship will be presented annually to students based on financial need, personal qualifications and ability to be academically successful. A preference may be given to applicants who graduated from Black Hawk County or Buchanan County high schools.

To learn more about Allen College scholarships, contact the Allen Foundation at 319-235-3960 or visit www.unitypoint.org/waterloo.

“We are fortunate to have friends of Allen like Ed Jesse and his family. This extremely generous gift will help many area students afford their dreams of entering the healthcare field and begin important and satisfying careers – many of them right here in the Cedar Valley. It will also aid Allen College in its efforts to increase enrollment at a time when nursing shortages remain a concern all across Iowa and the nation.”

Pam Delagardelle, President and CEO of UnityPoint Health – Waterloo

“Scholarships can make a huge difference for a student, and I know that I’m extremely grateful to have donors who are just as passionate about healthcare as I am.”

A Lifetime of Giving Deserves Thanks

The Cedar Valley has been blessed with many kindhearted philanthropists whose generosity has brought great rewards for our community. From historical museums and centers for the arts to top-notch educational facilities and award-winning healthcare services, Cedar Valley residents have much to be thankful for.

Many of these wonderful community assets could never have been built without the financial support of so many benevolent donors, including one of the Cedar Valley’s most benevolent donors: Pauline Barrett.

Over the past several years, it is clear that nearly everyone in the Cedar Valley has benefited from Mrs. Barrett’s kindness. Pauline has given major gifts to the University of Northern Iowa, Hawkeye Community College and the Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa, and she has transformed the Allen Hospital and Allen College campuses through multiple major gifts over many years. In fact, her gift to the UnityPoint Health – Allen Hospital emergency department and the Allen Heart and Vascular Center was one of the largest private donations in Cedar Valley history.

Page 19: ANNUAL REPORT - UnityPoint Health · Waterloo. “We’re delivering exactly what the community told us they were looking for to meet their healthcare needs: location, hours and services

But her community support goes beyond monetary donations. She has been a leader in our community as well:

• Past trustee of the Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa

• Past secretary of First Presbyterian Church of Waterloo Foundation

• Trustee for the YWCA

• Instrumental supporter of the Community Foundation’s Women’s Fund

• 2012 Recipient of The Courier’s Eight Over 80 Award

In November, Pauline was recognized by the Northeast Iowa Association of Fundraising Professionals as the Legacy Award winner for her devotion to the Cedar Valley’s healthcare and education.

The award was announced at the local AFP’s National Philanthropy Day Gift of the Heart luncheon. Each year, the AFP honors individuals who enhance their communities through philanthropy. Although many of Pauline’s gifts have been publicly recognized, she has donated many other gifts anonymously.

Thanks to Pauline’s $1.5 million gift to the For Allen For You campaign, UnityPoint Health will be naming the neonatal intensive care unit at Allen Hospital after her. More mothers can rest easy knowing Allen Hospital can deliver more multiple births and keep our premature babies closer to home. Thanks to Pauline’s gift, we are that much closer to creating six more private rooms for our youngest intensive-care patients. These are wonderful benefits for which we all can be grateful.

Thank you to Pauline Barrett for her continued and compassionate support of Allen Hospital and the improved care we have been able to provide for our patients because of it. And thank you to Pauline for her support of Allen College and the healthcare professionals who go on to care for Cedar Valley residents.

One of the wonderful things about giving back to your community is it often inspires others to give as well; another reason to be grateful for people like Pauline. We hope her example encourages more people to support our community’s projects, such as our For Allen For You campaign to improve the care we provide for you, your family and your Cedar Valley neighbors.

The Impact of Your Support

In 2016, the Allen Foundation focused our efforts on engaging more people. This included increasing Foundation volunteers and campaign advocates as well as growing the number of donors to the Foundation. This resulted in a 20 percent increase in donors last year. Your support allowed us to provide more than $2.6 million to Allen Hospital, Allen College, UnityPoint Clinic and UnityPoint At Home last year. Among the many impacts, gifts to the Allen Foundation provided:

• Funding for Prairie Parkway, a new outpatient medical home in Cedar Falls

• Lift chairs for Hospice patients• Nearly $600,000 in Allen

College student scholarships and awards

• A welcoming waiting area for children at the Child Protection Center

• New lighting, classroom furniture and enhanced technology at Allen College’s Alumni Hall

• New window blinds for the intensive care unit

• Supplies for Nurse Camp, a camp for high school students interested in a nursing career

• And much more!

Make a difference and join our growing family of donors today. Your gifts will make an impact for many generations to come. When you contribute to the Allen Foundation, your support helps us strengthen the programs and services of Allen Hospital and Allen College and the 10-county area that we serve.

UnityPoint Hospice nurse Samantha Weber loved snow, and she loved helping others. The best way for friends, family and co-workers to honor Samantha’s memory was a hat and mitten tree with items that were donated to local schools.

More than 150 hats and mittens were made or donated during the month of October 2016, and were then delivered to UnityPoint Health – Allen Hospital partner in education George Washington Carver Academy and Samantha’s hometown school in Grundy Center.

Samantha, who worked at UnityPoint Hospice, died of injuries resulting from a car accident. Those who worked with Samantha felt that this project carried on Samantha’s dedication to her work and to her patients.

NICU ReunionEtringer Family Shares Stories of SupportA month-long stay in the UnityPoint Health – Allen Hospital NICU wasn’t easy on premature twins Brayden and Bentley. It wasn’t easy on their parents, Maja and Josh Etringer. And it wasn’t easy on a new big sister, when it’s best for 2-year-olds to stay home.

“Having one child at home who needed me, being here and separating myself; I complained, I cried,” said Maja Etringer. “But everyone was supportive. They didn’t judge me.”

Maja and Josh asked aloud if everything was going to be OK. They wondered if they were doing the right thing. Allen Hospital neonatologist Dr. Pankaj Nagaraj provides the necessary expertise to help sick newborns grow, thrive and eventually go home for the first time. He also provides comfort for a family in distress.

“I had conversations with him that I maybe wouldn’t have with another doctor – maybe others wouldn’t have time, there are other babies,” Maja added. “He listened to every single thing I said. I asked silly questions, but he answered every single one of them. He gave reassurance that everything will be OK.”

In August, Brayden and Bentley returned to Allen Hospital for the annual NICU reunion as healthy 7-month-olds. Dr. Nagaraj was happy to catch up, although it wasn’t the first time he was updated on their progress since discharge.

“I called his cell phone at 9:30 one night because the twins had just got their first shots and our pediatrician had told us to go to the ER,” said Maja. “I called Dr. Nagaraj, he walked me through it and I was able to sleep. Who else does that? I called his cell phone at 9:30 at night to ask a question.”

As happy as families are to see nurses and doctors they spent such critical time with in the past, the NICU staff beams at the sight of babies they got to know so well.

“We’re lucky to have him as a doctor,” Josh said. “It’s almost like having a big city doctor here in the Cedar Valley. Dr. Nagaraj’s presence, just who he is, makes you feel calm and less stressed.”

Welcome to UnityPoint Health – Waterloo! In August, UnityPoint Health – Waterloo welcomed physicians and staff from urology and oncology to the UnityPoint Health team. The transition of these services was made from Cedar Valley Medical Specialists, PC to UnityPoint Health – Waterloo.

UnityPoint Health – Center for Urology and UnityPoint Health – Community Cancer Center have continued serving patients at their current locations. Employees of the two clinics are now part of UnityPoint Health – Waterloo, and patients have seen little change as a result of this shift.

The urology practice is located at 2413 W. Ridgeway Avenue in Waterloo. Eric Askeland, MD; Daniel Lee, MD; Mark Newton, MD; Holly Gaede, ARNP; and Michelle Nepple, PA-C, all now a part of UnityPoint Health – Waterloo, are a highly regarded group of urologists in our area.

The new Community Cancer Center is located at 3530 W. 4th Street, near United Medical Park in Waterloo. Anusha Reddy Madadi, MD; Wael Ghalayini, MD; and Julie Gleason, ARNP, are now seeing patients as members of the UnityPoint Health team.

This transition has positioned UnityPoint Health – Waterloo for anticipated changes in healthcare and has achieved the ultimate goal of offering the best possible care for each patient. We are proud to offer these services to our community.

Grateful to Allen And Community Partners During Flooding

When the Cedar Valley experienced flooding in September of 2016, the UnityPoint Health – Methodist/Proctor Foundation and the Allen Foundation teamed up to help those in need. Rob Parks, the vice president of the Methodist/Proctor Foundation, wanted to pay it forward after her community experienced a tornado a couple of years prior, so she reached out to the Allen Foundation, offering funds to deliver care packages to Allen employees affected by floodwaters. Together, the two foundations coordinated the purchase and distribution of the baskets, which included cleaning supplies, blankets, laundry detergent, gift cards to local restaurants and much more. During distribution, many tears of joy and gratitude were shared, followed by many thank-you notes and cards.

Also during the flooding, we witnessed firsthand how the Cedar Valley rose to the challenge of taking care of friends, neighbors and strangers. The downtown Cedar Falls campus of Western Home Communities was in danger of taking in water in the basement, which would shut down the campus’ power supply. With that in mind, it was decided to move second floor residents from the Martin Health Center before the lack of an elevator would make that exceedingly difficult.

Moving these 54 frail residents, many with mobility and/or memory issues, couldn’t have gone more smoothly. UnityPoint Health – Allen Hospital not only offered rooms for all 54 residents, but also had a full contingent of staff on hand to offer assistance. Reassuring handshakes and warm blankets greeted each resident as they arrived. Allen employees worked side-by-side with Western Home Communities staff to make sure each resident was comfortably settled with his or her belongings and supplies. According to Kris Hansen, CEO of Western Home Communities, “The Cedar Valley has taken ‘Iowa nice’ to a whole new level, proving that when the worst comes our way, the best in all of us is revealed.”

The Allen College Alumni Association hosted its sixth annual Donate to Educate scholarship benefit on Thursday, March 3, 2016, in Winter Hall on the Allen College campus. Thanks to the support of over 100 guests, more than $12,000 was raised for Allen College student scholarships. Featured auction items included handmade dollhouses crafted by former Allen Hospital CEO Larry Pugh, diamond and pearl sets, and gift baskets donated by area businesses. The Allen College Alumni Association’s mission is to promote and support Allen College and its heritage. We are extremely grateful for the gifts of donations and volunteered time that make this such a successful event.

To learn more about how you can participate in this annual event, contact Beth Sullivan at 319-226-2016.

Allen College Graduates Look to Diminish Nursing ShortagesWith national nurse shortage trends becoming increasingly imminent, Allen College looks to help fill the void. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that by 2022, there could be more than 1 million job openings for nurses. Each year, more baby boomers are retiring, and the nursing workforce is feeling the pressure, especially because nearly half the nursing workforce is comprised of this age group. Even more pressing, the medical needs for this rapidly aging population continue to grow.

Luckily, Allen’s talented and knowledgeable graduates have a wonderful representation in our area to supplement this shortage. According to Joanna Ramsden-Meier, Dean of Student Services at Allen College, of the 2016 graduates who reported employment information, 80 percent are employed in Iowa, and 25 percent are employed by UnityPoint Health – Allen Hospital. Because Waterloo is a small city, new nursing graduates can expect sign-on bonuses at area hospitals. “Allen Hospital, which would like to hire more of our graduates, provides a sign-on bonus of about $10,000 for individuals right out of nursing school,” said Ramsden-Meier.

Allen College is also working to avoid a shortage in nursing faculty, who are essential to the success of its students. An ongoing nursing shortage means that many potential educators are able to make more money by staying in clinical practice. The College offers a nurse faculty loan program from a federal grant to help recruit talented and passionate nursing faculty. This allows Allen College faculty to obtain advanced degrees with less stress about the debt load that is being incurred.

“We are committed to doing everything possible to ensure that Allen College continues to grow the number of nurse graduates we are producing. As a nurse and educator, I feel an obligation to lead Allen College’s efforts to implement innovative nursing programs that will produce increasing numbers of graduates with the knowledge, skills and passion to improve the health of the communities we serve in Iowa and beyond. Failure to fulfill this obligation to our citizens is not an option.” – Dr. Jerry Durham, Allen College Chancellor
