BPL certificate distribution
In 2005, BPL survey was conducted by MCGM, the
list of which came out in 2009. The BPL certificates
were uploaded on the internet on their website. When
the founder of VSMVM went through the list she
found that majority of the names of people belonging
to BPL category in Maharashtra Nagar were not
displayed on the internet. Out of around 50000
populations only 5 names could be seen in the list
displayed. Further the founder made a visit to M-
ward office and found out the names of 2500 people belonging to BPL category, took their
certificates in a pen drive. She then took an office on rent and appointed a staff who identified
them by making home visits. Out of 2500 people the organization could find out 1300 people and
distributed certificates to them. IN order to provide them with certificates it was difficult to take
these people the ward office to take the official’s signature, so the organization instead called the
BMC officer to their office and took his signature on all the certificates and distributed to
respective people.
Out of these 25 SHGs 12 groups received loan to
start their enterprises. Two federations were
formed, 10 groups in one federation, one is
Jeevanjyot Vastistar Sangh and another is
Dnyandeep Vastistar Sangh. The organization
organized different workshops for these SHGs on the process of maintaining records, writing
minutes, procedures for loan, how to start an enterprise etc. Some of the SHGs have started their
own business of making masala, papad and providing mid-day meal to anganwadi kids.
Activities
In 2014- 15 the organization formed 25 Self-help
groups of these 1300 people belonging to BPL
families.

ANNUAL REPORT 2014-15 7
BMC canteen
The organization helps in linking the government schemes to local people especially women. In
the year 2014-15 VSMVM guided Akshada Bachat Gat to put up a tender for running a canteen in
M ward office and it was approved by the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM),
Now Akshada Bachat Gat is running a canteen in M ward office where there are 10 women
working in kitchen and 2 women supervising them. The organization is handholding them in all
the procedures.
Poli Bhaji Kendra at Seawoods
After running the canteen successfully at MCGM office, the confidence among these women
(Akshada Bachat Gat) increased and they took a place on rent at Seawoods and started a “Poli
Bhaji Kendra”. Here also 12 women are working. VSMVM plays an important role in this process
where the organization helps the SHG in getting outside orders, doing their audits, informing them
about different government schemes. This helps the SHG expand their business and earn profit.
Women’s Day celebration
International women’s day is a global celebration of the
social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The
day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity. VSMVM
as every year this year also celebrated the Women’s Day. On this
occasion around 100-150 women attended the program. The
organization had organized an awareness program on Sex
Selection using puppet show as a medium of
communication. Mr. Pawar, MCGM officer and Ms. Rakhi
Jadhav, Supervisor, ICDS were invited as guests.

Anand Melava
“Savitribai Phule Jayanti” is celebrated
every year to commemorate the women
who pioneered women education in
India. People celebrate “Savitribai
Phule’s” birth anniversary as a
Women Empowerment Day. Like every
year this year also the organization
celebrated Savitri Bai’s Jayanti and
Rajmata Jijau’s Jayanti. On this
occasion VSMVM organized “Anand Melava” for women where various games like musical chair,
fugdi, fashion show, one minute games etc were conducted. The objective behind organizing such
games was to give community women a platform to have fun time. Guests from TISS, Ms. Sheetal
Kamble and Mittal were also present for the celebration.
Health check-up camp
Even after decades of freedom, India is
struggling to provide basic health services to its
people. Thyroid cancer is commonly diagnosed at
a younger age than most other adult cancers.
Nearly 3 out of 4 cases are found in women. This
situation calls for timely care and diagnosis which
can reduce the incidence of morbidity and mortality especially among children and women. To
reduce such incidences VSMVM had organized a health check up camp. Thyroid checkup camp
was organized for women above 40 years and specialized doctors from Thyroid Organization were
invited. The women who were identified with thyroid problem were referred to a hospital for
further treatment. Besides the health check up camp a stall was put up by Kotak Education
Foundation (KEF) offering vocational training opportunities to youth. Many youth visited the stall
and got information about the different courses offered by Kotak Education Foundation.

ANNUAL REPORT 2014-15 9
Solid Waste
Management
Solid waste management is one of
the major challenges faced by
many countries around the globe.
Inadequate collection, recycling
or treatment and
uncontrolled disposal of waste in
dumps can lead to severe hazards,
such as health risks and
environmental pollution. In order to reduce the health risks and environmental pollution, VSMVM
in collaboration with MCGM has under the Vasti Swachhata Abhiyan now known as Swachha
Mumbai Prabodhan Abhiyan spreads awareness about Solid Waste Management which includes
segregation of wet and dry waste. This program is run in Jan Kalyan Society of Mankhurd which
has a population of around 1200 people. The organization conducts continuous awareness
programs in the society and is thinking of appointing few workers to keep the society clean.
Training on best out of waste
Recycling is one of the best ways for you to have a positive
impact on the world in which we live. Recycling is important to both
the natural environment and us. We must act fast as the amount of waste
we create is increasing all the time. And to contribute towards this,
VSMVM organized a training program for women of Jan Kalyan Society, Mankhurd, where the
women were trained to make paper bags and were also given tips on how to do its marketing to
generate income from it. The other objective behind organizing this training was to send across
the message of reducing the use of plastic. The organization also conducts awareness programs on
disadvantages of using plastic and motivates people to use paper or cloth bags.

ANNUAL REPORT 2014-15 10
Sessions with Adolescent girls
As girls approach adolescence, they face the start of a narrow bridge. As they move through
adolescence they must cross this bridge, emerging at the end as adult young women. However, the
bridge through adolescence is a risky one for girls. They are significantly more vulnerable than
their male counterparts and are more likely to fall off the bridge. Adolescent girls face poorer
health outcomes, are more likely to become infected with HIV, more socially isolated, less likely
to make the transition to secondary school or to complete it, and have fewer income-generating
opportunities. The organization works with the adolescent girls through ICDS program, where
they create awareness about skill development, conduct English speaking classes.
Counseling services for women
In India where almost half of the
population is women, they have always
been ill-treated and deprived of their right
to life and personal liberty as provided
under the constitution of India. Behind
closed doors of homes all across our country, people are being tortured, beaten and killed. It is
happening in rural areas, towns, cities and in metropolitans as well. It is crossing all social classes,
genders, racial lines and age groups. Offences against women which reflects the pathetic reality
that women are just not safe and secure anywhere. Such women need emotional support and
VSMVM provides them that support by offering counseling services to them. For legal support
the organization refers them to lawyers and accompanies them to police stations. The organization
conducts meetings with self-help groups in which they talk about these issues so that people can
refer such cases to VSMVM.
The Objective is to ensure a safe
and healthy environment for girls
and women of the society.

Environment Cleanliness
Awareness Campaigns of
School children
Environment is a place where human as well as
plants and animals live. Keeping it clean and neat is our responsibility. It is necessary to keep our
environment clean because we get fresh air, reduce pollution etc. An unclean environment leads
to a bad condition of a society, arrival of diseases and many more. With the ever increasing use of
technology and industries flourishing the amount of pollution in our environment is increasing at
a rapid pace. Keeping our environment clean is a very important part of our lives in these
days. Children play a very important role here as they act as the motivator for their parents and
that is why VSMVM in collaboration with World Vision conducted street plays of children to
spread awareness about “Clean and Green Mumbai”. In which they conveyed the message of
maintaining cleanliness inside and outside their house, advantages of clean environment and
disadvantages of pollution at individual and societal level. Through this street play the organization
could reach to around 800-1000 people of Mankhurd.
Slogan competition in school
Further the organization had organized a competition of school
children in the age group of 8-14 years in Mankhurd to understand
the perspective of school children on the issue of health and
sanitation. The students were supposed to prepare slogans on
cleanliness/ waste management/ sanitation etc. “Kachra taka petit,
Mumbai Shahar dilsel aitit”, “Kachra petiti taka naytar prasang yeil
baka” were some of the examples of slogans prepared by students.
were targetted through the street play presented by the organization in Mankhurd.

The Way Forward …
As decided in the last year, the organization could intervene in the issue of
sanitation for which it partnered with MCGM’s Swachha Mumbai Probodhan Abhiyan.
The organizations has also been involved in making people aware about the government
schemes and also get them access to the same. In the next year VSMVM is planning to take
up project of mid-day meal for ICDS anganwadis through which the women would get a
source for earning a livelihood. It will also collaborate with other like- minded organization
working on different issues like health, sanitation, skill development, education, women
empowerment etc. to offer better services to the community people.
