STUDENT CENTER TASKFORCE Context In the Spring of 2015, the Student Government Association requested a DEE class to conduct research regarding a potential Student Center at the University and the logistics behind it. In the Fall of 2015, Professor Elizabeth Covino’s DEE class performed a study regarding a potential student center at Johnson & Wales University. These findings were shared with senior administration and with student affairs. The team of presenters consisted of President Nuñez, Secretary Lind and Senator Cutaia.

The objective of this DEE project is to execute an extensive needs assessment within the Johnson & Wales University Providence Community to examine the need for a student center on the Downcity Campus. Goals and Expectations Throughout the course, we expected to reach the following goals of: ➔ At least 4 student focus groups ➔ At least 400 student survey responses ➔ Establish if there is a need for a student center ➔ Allow students to give an opinion on the subject

What We Do:

• An additional means of gathering student feedback on university issues • Communicating issues and feedback to administration and respected departments based on the

nature of the issues reported by the student body • The committee shall oversee the solicitation of student feedback through various collection methods

i.e. focus groups, surveys, and round tables • The committee shall generate reports and/or prepare presentations of their finding to the Senate,

administration or departments to initiate additional action steps to enhance the student experience based on feedback the committee has gather

• The committee shall also engage in other special projects as determined by the Executive Vice President or the Executive Board

• Shall oversee the Liaison Program.

The Liaison Program Since Executive Vice President Reney and the Executive board moved the Liaison Program out of the constitution and into it’s own Guidelines overseen by URC and Executive Vice President(EVP). When it came time to selecting Liaisons URC met and went over appellations and choose the positions based on experience and other roles on campus. In April URC hosted a Liaison Roundtable, where all members of URC, and Liaison got together to talk about more improvements on the program for next year. Some of these improvements are crating a Liaison Report, where Liaisons report back to URC and the EVP on what they have been doing in their position. Also making it mandatory to go to at lest 2 URC meetings a Trimesters, and to go to mandatory Liaison meetings, when URC and the EVP feels it’s needed. These new policy’s are being put into place to better communication in all parties of this program, witch was decided to be the biggest flaw with the Liaison Program.


The Safe Drinking Event At the start of the year URC discussed that JWU just goes over about safe drinking practices but never really shows it. URC discussed how we can do this. They talked about have a DUI crash. Senator Eliza Brill, also the Liaison for campus safety, talked to Officer Knott from Safety & Security to set up an event. They worked together and had the Cranston Police Dept. come to campus with SINDE, Simulated, Intoxicated Driving Experience, witch is a go-kart that drives like your drunk driving. This is to help students be more aware of how it is to drink and drive. Sexual Violence on Campus Awareness Senator Mikaela Stope has been in contact with Gender Equity Center about getting signs up in bathrooms about who to contact if you’re a victim of Sexual Violence. This is something she saw at another school when visiting and something she plains on working with URC with next school year. The Psychology Info Session Senator Harsha Ramchand, along with the Psychology Club put together an Info session about all the different tracks you can take as a Psychology major at JWU, and how to do so. A lot of Students found it super helpful, and next years URC will be looking into doing similar info sessions for other majors next year. Kitchens in Snowden Senator Harsha Ramchand has been looking into ways of getting a kitchen in Snowden res hall, then hopefully using that model to get more in other halls as well. She has been in contact with the RD of Snowden, and is moving forward with a proposal to get this to happen. It’s the Small Things A lot smaller student issues came up though out the year that URC was able to address. One small big issue this year was students not feeling comfortable walking on campus at night, mostly walking from Geabe to Xavier. We were able to give these concerns to Senator Eliza Brill, Senator for Campus Safety, who brought those concerns up with Campus Safety & Security. Then they where able to increase foot portal on campus, and make lights brighter in campus controlled areas. We used this same model for other departments and areas like Transportation, Dinning, and other department across campus.

The Networking Reception In January SGA host the Networking Reception. This was facilitated by the EVP. We invited school administrators, and SGA members to network together. This has been something that SGA has done in the past, however it was done a little different this year. With help from the SGA secretory and Social Media Coordinator, we had a strong social media focus, with a hash tag, and the SGA tweeting out networking advise on how to network. We also worked with the EX. Ed on a networking training session before the event, so our SGA members were more prepared for the event.

What We Do

The Student Government Association’s Student Organization Review Committee (SORC), is responsible for listening to presentations as to why potentials clubs and organizations should be approved as student organizations on campus. The Student Organization Review Committee is in charge of preparing updated application guidelines to possible student organizations. SORC assists Student Involvement and Leadership to confirm that all student organizations have accurate governing documents on file. The Student Organization Review Committee also helps to unify all existing clubs and organizations on campus. SORC serves as a resource to all potential clubs and organizations as well as existing clubs and organizations.

Program of Work

In the fall the members of SORC collaborated to figure out what our goals were for the year and how to accomplish these goals. The goals were focused on student and student organization involvement on campus and how to improve involvement as a whole. The goals SORC set for the year are, to have a unifying club event or competition, to provide resources and workshops to clubs and organizations to help with different parts of running an organization, and to create a monthly tri update form for clubs and organizations to fill out.

Goal 1: A Unifying Club Event Or Competition:

The first event SORC came up with to get clubs more involved with each other was a TV advertisement completion. This would be a one minute school spirit video and the theme would be what oneJWU means to your club/organization. SORC also talked about ways to improve promotion of all club events on campus. Some ways of doing this could be through Student Government Association social media accounts, Johnson & Wales Providence social media accounts, announcement on JWUlink and involvement network for events calendar, use of residence hall Facebook pages. SORC is also in the process of creating a Google form to send out to clubs and organizations for them to fill out whenever they want assistance advertising their events. The committee also talked about ways to get all senators and executive board members more involved on campus. The committee came up with an idea for an incentive program to get all of senate to go to more events, whoever goes to the most events wins a small prize.


Goal 2: To Provide Resources And Workshops To Clubs And Organizations:

As a committee we came up with a few different workshops that would help clubs and organizations represent themselves and their members in the best ways possible. Some of these workshops include, a constitutional editing workshop, a common issues break up group session, professional/presentation workshop which would show the organization and its members how being a part of that club will help them in the future, and a workshop to help with elevator speeches which we can collaborate with other offices and organizations to organize.

Goal 3: Create a monthly tri update form for clubs and organizations to fill out:

SORC wants to create a monthly update form that would be mandatory for all active clubs and organizations to fill out. The idea behind this is to be able to oversee that all clubs and organizations are running smoothly and efficiently. The form will also allow SORC to see what clubs are in need of more assistance then other clubs. This will allow us to focus on helping the clubs that need help in order to get back on their feet. The committee talked about how we want all student organizations to know that SORC is a resource that they should utilize as much as they feel needed. To do this the committee set a goal to go to at least one of every on campus organizations’ meetings by the end of the year.

NEWLY APPROVED ORGANIZATIONS ON CAMPUS:

JWU Gear- The purpose of this club shall be to provide a leisure environment for automotive aficionados to come together on-campus and participate in automotive related events, gatherings, and information sessions; primarily being tied to applying the knowledge of engineering and the sciences to the automotive industry. Additionally we seek to educate our members about automotive systems and road safety. Our club will provide support to campus students looking to maintain their vehicles by providing direct support, informational reference, and/or lending common tools free of charge to club members.

Spoon University- The aims of this association are to give students the chance to run their own online publication, to enhance student’s writing ability and communication skills, and to share information with college students pertaining to food, health and wellness.

Modernist Cuisine- The “Modernist Cuisine Club” at Johnson and Wales sets out to practice Modernist cooking techniques simultaneously integrating the juxtaposition against older techniques and concepts. Modernist cuisine will benefit its members by providing new techniques as well as challenging old techniques to provide for a better understanding of ingredients and preparations of food, dedicating our time to further our education and express our passion for the culinary arts in a light and creative atmosphere.


League of Legends- The JWU League of legends Team, will be established to make a competitive E-sports teams for the university. We will create 7 person teams of university students. They will compete against other university s across the country and in our own back yard in this energetic E-sport played across the world. The JWU league of Legends team will build skills used in everyday life like team work cooperation and friendly competition.

Style & Design Association- The purpose of The Style and Design Association (SDA) is to highlight the ways in which culture, fashion and design intersect. The SDA club will help educate students about the impact that art, visual design and lifestyles have on the fashion industry. This will allow students to gain a broader knowledge of how the fashion industry is influenced by a variety of factors. Students will engage in activities that will allow them to obtain cultural experiences and creative practices that they can relate to their majors. The SDA club’s purpose is also to provide a safe environment for students to develop their creative design practices through participation in various workshops. In addition, members will participate in volunteer work that will help them gain experience in the fashion industry and contribute to the larger community. The SDA club will educate students about contemporary ideology present in the fashion and design industry.

Best Buddies- The mission of Best Buddies is to establish a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment, and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). We do this by matching student volunteers in mutually enriching friendships with persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The purpose of Best Buddies at Johnson & Wales University is to teach social inclusion and respect for all people throughout campus, and promote IDD awareness throughout the community. Johnson & Wales strives to be a diverse university, and Best Buddies will contribute to this initiative by including those with IDD into our Wildcat community as well.

WISE- The purpose of WISE is to create and support programs that enhance the success and growth of female students in the business of sports. The organization strives to be the definitive source for young businesswomen seeking information about issues, challenges and opportunities impacting all stages of their career — from entry level to senior management and those in transition.

She Lifts- The purpose of She Lifts is to provide support, tips and workshops to women and supporters of women interested in weightlifting and general fitness. She Lifts plans to provide an environment where individuals can express concerns, ask for assistance and gain confidence when it comes to weight lifting and navigating a gym.

Keep’n it Reel-Our purpose is to bring together anglers of JWU to provide an environment in that everyone learns from each other. We will teach and learn about different kinds of fish, Both fresh & saltwater, what kinds of tackle to use, fishing patterns, and much more, as well as take organized fishing trips.


Super Smash Brothers Club-The purpose of this club is to give players of the Super Smash Bros video game a competitive and casual to compete, socialize and relax in a judgment free environment.

Saudi Club- A new community aiming to enrich the campus cultural and international life!

Her Campus- An online magazine targeting college female demographics. Her Campus JWU will focus on event planning, blogging and community services.

Adventure Photography Club- The purpose of this club is to provide students with a network of fellow photographers, and the teachings of our advisor and professional photographer Steven Spencer. Adventure Photo Club will meet twice a month. One meeting will be an informational classroom style meeting, where photographers will learn a new skill. The other meeting will be a destination shoot of the clubs choosing.

The National Society of Leadership and Success- The Society is an organization that helps people discover and achieve their goals. The Society offers life-changing lectures from the nation's leading presenters and a community where like-minded, success-oriented individuals come together and help one another succeed. The Society also serves as a powerful force of good in the greater community by encouraging and organizing action to better the world. Students accept nominations and invites to become recognized as members of the Society. However, to achieve induction members must attend Orientation, Leadership Training Day, 3 Speaker Broadcasts and 3 Success Networking Team meetings.

Students for the Ethical Treatment of Animals- We are a campus animal rights organization at Johnson & Wales University. We advocate for the end to animal abuse by whatever legal means we find at our disposal. This includes documentary showings, lobbying campus departments for positive change on campus, volunteering at animal shelters in the neighborhood, tabling at campus events, hosting fundraisers for a selected organization and many other things.

Magic The Gathering Club- This organization is for students interested in playing Magic The Gathering to come together to play! Magic The Gathering is trading card game produced and it continues to thrive, with approximately twenty million players as of 2015.Magic can be played by two or more players in various formats, the most common of which uses a deck of 60+ cards, either in person with printed cards or using a deck of virtual cards through an internet based program.

Future Food Entrepreneurs- We are a club that focuses on bringing a purpose to those who want to start up their own culinary business. We are here to establish a platform for both students and local business owners to communicate, and to nurture and foster potential culinary business ideas.


Taiwanese Student Association- The Taiwanese Student Association (TSA) aims to bring Taiwanese students together by providing resources to help members acclimate to American culture, as well by fostering connections with our Taiwanese alumni. The organization strives to spread awareness of Taiwanese culture.

Science Club- The science club will help bring like minded students together have an interest in science and that want to apply concepts they learn in the classroom in another setting where they have more time to spend on learning!

Bee The Change- Educate students about the issues involved with the bees dying off today and learn more about sustainability in general!

Step Team- To create a comfortable, open environment where students come have a family away from home, learn the importance of stepping, how to step, and grow together as a team.

Food Photography Club- The Food Photography Club is open to any student interested in learning more about photography. Meetings consist mainly of lessons and workshops that teach the basics of photography, as well as more advanced food photography techniques and food styling.

Outing Club- The outing club is to bring together like minded students who have an interest in outdoor activities including camping, backpacking, whitewater rafting, and other activities.

CLUB SPORTS

Johnson & Wales University Women's Rugby Football Club- The Women's Rugby Football Club is focused on teaching/Improving rugby skills for all members, playing at a competitive level, and promoting a positive team spirit on campus.

Intercollegiate Western Horse Show Association - The purpose of this organization is to allow students the opportunity to ride and compete in the discipline of western riding. Students will be allowed to have instructed western riding, training and will be able to compete against other colleges on multiple different horses.

What We Do

The Communications and Development Committee oversees the Association’s public relations, marketing, and internal and external communications; works with internal and external development of the Association; oversees the marketing of elections; and manages the media coordinator(s).

Social Media Coordinator

Annie Jones, sophomore advertising major, was selected as the social media coordinator for the 2015-2016 academic year. The coordinator maintained SGA’s social media presence, brought the Secretary’s attention to pressing student communications, and worked with CDC to develop communications plans.

Elections Ads for Facebook & Snapchat

Facebook ads. Spent $50 for fall elections and $100 for Spring elections

Spring facbook ads had 17,284 impressions, which netted 140 votes (website clicks)

Fall facebook ads had 10,123 impressions and netted 84 votes (website clicks)

Instagram engagement has increased 90% in a 10 month period

IMPLEMENTATION OF NEW BRAND

The 2014-2015 CDC approved new branding guidelines for the Association; the new brand came to life in the 2015-2016 academic year.

Fall Elections

The Executive Board served as the board of elections for the fall 2015 elections. In order to ensure ample productive time during the academic year, the board accelerated the timeline of the Fall elections to ensure the SGA retreat could take place in October.

The Board of Election’s decision to move up fall elections was ratified later in the year by the University Senate

oneJWU Campaign

The CDC was the point of contact for the oneJWU campaign. More information about the campaign can be found in the oneJWU section

Advertising Workshop with Ad Club/Resource Room/SGA

The CDC hosted an Advertising Workshop for clubs/organizations in the spring term of 2016. With so many active student groups, clubs/orgs struggle to stand out to gain attendance at events. The Ad Club, Resource Room, and SGA co-hosted an advertising workshop to help organizations learn how to brand themselves and better promote events.

Constitution Review/Updates

The CDC, in collaboration with the Judicial Court, made significant changes to the SGA constitution to better align the document with SGA’s vision and role on campus.

Campus Herald Regular Updates

The Campus Herald allowed SGA a bi-weekly column in the newspaper for SGA updates. A different member of the Senate wrote a recap of the week’s Senate meeting every other week.

Harborside Blvd/Wildcat Way legislation

The CDC introduced legislation to the Senate to propose renaming Harborside Boulevard as Wildcat Way as a way to increase Wildcat pride. After hearing testimony from the student body and other Senators, the CDC withdrew the bill from consideration.

Throughout the course of these past three trimesters, the committee has allocated a total of $91,421.20 to over 55 clubs and organizations on campus. We allocated more than our budget of $85,000 due to clubs and organizations not picking up the full amount of fund approved.

In the Fall Trimester, we proposed improvements to the guidelines that have benefited Clubs and Organizations, which have brought along new sections to the guidelines-- the New Club Initiative and Fundraisers. The New Club Initiative’s sole purpose is to give newly approved clubs or organizations on campus start-up funds that could be used as they seem necessary. As a result of a growing need, the fundraising guidelines (10% of the total cost) were introduced to encourage clubs and organizations to raise funds either for their club or external philanthropies. Both mentioned guidelines have been utilized by ten clubs and organizations on campus.

The committee held their last meeting on May 3rd, 2016 on the Harborside campus. Under of the leadership of SGA Treasurer, the committee revised the guidelines once more for the 2016-2017 SGA Treasure and Appropriations Committee. These recommendations included more descriptive sub-sections, as well as new sections that were catered to the type of clubs and organizations on our campus.


Fall Trimester

The Appropriations Committee Allotted $30,000.00 of supplemental funds for the Fall Trimester. The committee allocated a total of $20,006.29.

Winter Trimester

The Appropriations Committee Allotted $25,000.00 of supplemental funds for the Winter Trimester. The committee allocated a total of $41,568.00. We saw a large amount of academic and special interest clubs and organizations appropriate.

Spring Trimester

The Appropriations Committee Allotted $30,000.00 of supplemental funds for the Spring Trimester. The committee allocated a total of $28,261.42. Due to clubs and organizations being in the 30-day window of collecting approved funds, there is not a definite number in the budget.


JUDICIAL COURT Judicial Court is made up of the Speaker of the Senate, Speaker Pro Temp, and chosen co-chairs of the SGA’s committees. This group of individuals upholds the SGA’s constitution and By Laws, ensuring that all members of SGA, as well as SGA as a whole are following the guidelines set forth in the written documents. Whenever an issue arises within SGA, Judicial Court is what will seek to resolve it.

Throughout the year, Judicial Court had four meetings. The first was to discuss with a SGA member their behavior in regards to missing multiple senate and committee meetings. The Judicial Court remedied with having the member be required to attend every meeting for the remainder of the term, and in the following term be restricted to only missing one meeting before further remedy.

The second meeting was in regards to two SGA members falling below their required GPA set forth by the SGA constitution. The meeting allowed for the SGA member brought in and the Judicial Court to discuss ways for the members to bring up their grades, studying habits, and how to use SGA as a resource. The two members were also remedied to send a mandated bi-weekly grade report each Sunday before senate meetings for the remainder of the term.

The third meeting we discussed a senator who had exceeded the allotted number of senate meetings missed and decided that they may continue on senate but not miss any more meetings. This senator then missed the next senate meeting and was automatically dismissed from senate.

Our finally meeting, we discussed constitutional edits for this next academic year and suggestions we’d like added in!

LIAISON PROGRAM The Executive Vice President along with the University Relations Committee (URC) oversees the Liaison Program. Each liaison position is responsible for:

• Establishing a connection between SGA and the directors/staff or deans/faculty of the listed departments

• Identify concerns from the student body in the respective areas and report to Senate • Maintaining regular Check-ins with department staff and identifying areas where SGA can

provide support for issues/initiatives • Reporting on dealings with department/staff or deans/faculty at all senate meetings and on all

senator report forms.

Additional Duties: • Liaisons shall sit on standing university committees related to their affiliated department/area and

will be responsible for offering the student perspective/feedback to committees and reporting on the dealings of the committees

o Liaisons will be assigned to the committees at the discretion of the Executive Vice President and URC (with input/assistance from Executive Cabinet and advisors) and based on preference

• Liaisons will come to at lest two URC meetings a Trimester. • Liaisons will come to any mandatory liaison meetings, when URC and the Executive Vice President

calls them. • Liaisons will be required to fill out weekly or Bi-weekly reports to URC on what they have been

doing in the position. • Suggested two senators in this position

Liaisons positions are not just limited to one person, if URC and The Executive Vice President, feels the need to have more people in one position, they may do so. The Senator Liaison positions are as followed: 1. Senator for Campus Facilities

• Will oversee facilities walkthroughs (academic buildings) and report on any issues or discrepancies that may negatively affect students

• Shall maintain regular check-ups on SGA charging stations (and any other SGA contributions of SGA to campus facilities) and report on any damages/misuse

• Shall serve on other university committees affiliated with liaison area as assigned and work with the Campus Facilities and grounds departments.

2. Senator for Diversity & Inclusiveness • Shall oversee regular communication/relations to the BRIDGE Center, Gender Equity Center,

and International Center to identify areas for possible collaborations, focus groups, or joint ventures/events

• Shall oversee student/SGA representation on the Global Learning Committee • Shall serve on other university committees affiliated with liaison area as assigned

3. Senator for Commuting Students

• Shall oversee communication (on an as needed basis) with the Dept. of Off Campus Student Services.

• Shall serve on other university committees/special task forces affiliated with liaison area as assigned


4. Senator for Student Life • Shall oversee regular communication/relations with Dept.’s of Student Involvement and

Leadership, and New Student Orientation to identify areas for possible collaborations, focus groups, or joint ventures/initiatives

• Shall engage in meetings with staff from listed departments to identify areas where SGA can target different populations of students to increase student engagement and involvement

oneJWU 2015 is the year we break down barriers, challenge the status quo, and unite as oneJWU. We herald two seperated halves of a single campus. Not only is there a physical divide between Downcity and Harborside; but organizations and departments operate within individual silos.

The concept of oneJWU was born in the campaign process in the spring of 2015. All of the candidates for executive board expected to field student concerns dealing with the “typical” student issues--transportation, parking, dining, etc. Rather than focusing on these issues, the student body said loud and clear that our campus was in need of unity.

oneJWU is the idea of actively seeking collaborative opportunities outside of the silos organizations and departments typically work within. SGA presented the idea to the student body, and students manifested the campaign in many ways. The 2015-2016 academic year saw a surge in collaborative events, a spike in event attendance from students who wouldn’t normally have attended, and a feeling of unity online. To date, #oneJWU has more than 1,000 posts on Instagram, thousands more on Twitter and Facebook. Overall, the #oneJWU campaign is estimated to have reached more than 300,000 people online with more than a million impressions.

The campaign’s soft reveal was at Family Weekend in 2015, where SGA marched to the beat of an original oneJWU mix sporting the now-famous oneJWU shirts in the parade. SGA released an official oneJWU anthem video shortly after, which went viral in campus communities. oneJWU continued well into the academic year, with a new video being featured at the Wildcat Hockey game at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center.

oneJWU continues--in the 2016 spring general election, we asked voters if they felt a stronger sense of unity on campus in the 2015-2016 academic year. More than 75% of students were aware of the oneJWU campaign and felt a stronger sense of campus unity.
