dear reader,

The year 2013 was quite a successful year in our 53 years of history. It is my pleasure to introduce to you the 2013 ECMA Annual Review as evidence of our efforts. ECMA has made good progress on the various topics of importance for the future of our industry. Reading through this issue you may recognize many subjects relevant and critical for your own business.

Please join me in appreciating the enthusiasm and engagement of our ECMA team, carried by the many volunteers in the Committees and Forums together with our offi ce in The Hague.

I warmly thank all who have contributed to the success of our organisation in 2013!

ECMA has strengthened further its position and visibility in the market. I am convinced that we have set out on the right course with our decision to transform from the old to the new ECMA. We have welcomed many new members - both from the converting and from the supplier side - and we can sense the “buzz” going around to join and to participate in ECMA. We could also feel this positive vibe during our Congress in Dubrovnik, Croatia in September 2013. This was an event not to be missed: more than 200 people have joined and enjoyed both the professional work program and the pleasant evening events. We also jointly celebrated the 25th Anniversary of Pro Carton with a Gala Dinner, moving speeches and the Annual ECMA & Pro Carton Awards.

Please mark already 17 - 20 September 2014 in your schedule to attend the Congress in Sorrento/Naples, Italy! ECMA and Pro Carton will, for the fi rst time, organise this Congress as a combined event.

Another highlight of 2013 was the successful launch of the Polish Folding Cartons Association by local converters. We are very pleased with this initiative and ECMA Polska can count on our full support. It is evident that our industry needs to act together - both on a European and a national level - in order to be effective and to play a signifi cant role in the European arena. We need strong national associations and organisations to bring forward the expertise and professionalism of the industry.

Further I would like to highlight all accomplishments in connection with Food Safety. The development and roll-out of the ECMA GMP and the ECMA Food Seal would never have been possible, at this scale and with this recognition, in isolation or on an individual basis.

Furthermore, the consequences of the revision of the EU Tobacco Products Directive (TPD2) had to be tackled on a European level and nationally in various countries. Under such circumstances it is imperative for our industry to speak with one voice, representing 500 carton producers in nearly all countries in the European Economic Area, with a workforce of about 45.000 people. I can confi rm that the packaging expertise from ECMA through its members is commonly recognised and taken seriously into account in decision making processes of customers, governmental bodies and other stakeholders. Being on the cutting edge and providing value, that’s where ECMA must be in order to encounter our industry`s challenges.

Also the year 2014 will require all our combined strengths, knowledge, creativity, energy and whit. I am sure together we have built the necessary fi rm and solid basis for the years to come.

Of course it is easy for ECMA to list the numerous benefi ts of membership, but what do our members have to say about it? After all, they are the ones that can judge whether ECMA is doing a good job or not. Here are a couple of quotes:

It is not about believing in the benefi ts of the ECMA association. They are readily available. It is about applying them into ones daily business to better serve the market. And the most valuable are the ones, each member provides by their attendance and open-mindedness in sharing ideas, challenges and thoughts at events. Simon Znidar, General Manager – EGP Embalazno Grafi cno Podjetje d.d. (Slovenia)

Pankaboard strongly believes, that by being a member of ECMA we have a wonderful opportunity to add the knowledge of our company to a wide audience of international interest groups involved in the organization. Through the membership we are able to gain more knowledge of the market as well as understand better, what are the trends and the requirements of the carton industry in Europe both now and in the future. We highly appreciate the fact, that ECMA can bring the industry stake-holders closer together for the benefi t of all parties. By many of its services ECMA can offer us a platform, which brings us closer to the whole industry and its main decision-makers. The membership is fully worth the investment.Mr. Ilkka Mutka, Sales Director – Pankaboard OY (Finland).

The ECMA membership opens the door to decision makers in our trade. The association is an excellent platform to exchange experience, know-how and ideas about trends and developments in the carton industry. The regular conferences provide the opportunity to broaden our acquaintance and strengthen existing contacts in an informal ambiance. Networking is an essential source of inspiration!Dieter Seitz, Sales Director – Gietz AG (Switzerland)

In times of a global customer base it is vital to share and discuss common topics and developments. Only by using such a platform as ECMA provides, it will be possible to cope with the upcoming trends and challenges. Developing our industry can best be achieved by bundling ideas and interests on a basis of equal experts.Mag. Ing. Martin Schmutterer, CEO – Eberle Druck GmbH (Austria)

In a fast changing world, it is essential to exchange information consciously to properly deal with the daily challenges of the market. Palladio Zannini believes that ECMA, through its events, seminars and publications creates an important added value given by the experience and know-how of its members.Paolo Procelli, Marketing Manager – Palladio Zannini Industrie Grafi che Cartotecniche S.p.A. eCmA technical Committee

Chaired by Arend-Jan Luten (Graphic Packaging), the Technical Committee is one of the very active platforms within the association. A solid team of company and national association’s experts continued its deep involvement in all issues related to food safety.

The committee met three times in 2013, with this year one of the meetings taking place at the well-known FABES Research Institute in Munich. Additional meetings with the involvement of a Technical Committee delegation were held with FoodDrinkEurope and with the UV/EB association RadTech Europe.

Those different meetings offered very valuable occasions to discuss and assess at sector level, the key food safety developments, the information obtained in the leading food safety industry and regulatory platforms in which ECMA is involved and the background obtained in the attended conferences (Global Food Safety conference GFSI/Barcelona, FEICA seminar/Brussels, MOCRINIS workshop/Bologna, Fresenius FCM conference/Koln).

Aside the continued work related to the ECMA GMP (see page 11), the mineral oils issue, the German regulatory developments, appropriate food safety information in supply chains, the Food

Contact Materials database developed by the Belgian Scientifi c Institute for Public Health (WIV/ISP) and standardisation work were some of the topics well covered in 2013.

Key information and messages out of the Technical Committee meetings were shared with the membership, through the food contact e-mail network. In 2013, 15 update mails went to all national associations and to the company experts having expressed an interest for technical information.

The Technical Committee is chaired by Arend-Jan Luten (Graphic Packaging) and supported by Technical Advisor Jan Cardon.

marketing and Communications Committee

ECMA Congress 2013 Mission of the Marketing and Communications Committee is to strengthen ECMA’s image towards both members and potential members. The annual ECMA Congress is the main event for the European folding carton industry, and is organised under the auspices of the Marketing and Communications Committee. The 2013 congress has been very successful with a great working programme, excellent location and very good atmosphere. A lot of time and effort was invested to create an interesting working programme and to organise an attractive social programme, which offered the congress participants excellent networking opportunities.

ECMA / Pro Carton Congress 2014The preparations for the combined ECMA / Pro Carton Congress 2014 were already started in 2013 by a special working group. It will be the fi rst time that ECMA and Pro Carton join forces to organise an event for the whole folding carton supply chain including end-users. The congress will be organised at the Hilton Hotel in Sorrento (near Naples) in Italy. More information on the congress programme will be made available on the ECMA website.

Membership Campaign 2013The 2013 membership campaign has been very successful with a total of nine new members. The number of ECMA members is gradually increasing and the positioning of the new ECMA has worked out very well. A new ECMA membership brochure was launched directly after this year’s congress to explain the benefi ts and added value ECMA offers to our existing members and in particular towards potential members. For 2014 the goal will be to convince especially more (medium sized) converters to join ECMA.

Business Intelligence / ECMA Sales ToolkitTogether with ECMA’s business intelligence partners and with the help of the national associations the MCC has started to streamline the various business intelligence tools ECMA currently uses and all other information that is now, and could be, available within ECMA. This will have to result into more and better (statistical) data being available and easy to access for our members and the launch of the ECMA Sales Toolkit in 2014. The aim is to cover the main topics and to speak the same language as an industry when we are in contact with our customers and other stakeholders.

And don’t forget the MCC motto: ‘More Converted Cartons’!

The Marketing and Communications Committee is chaired by Jean-François Roche (AR Packaging Group AB) and supported by Rogier Krabbendam (ECMA).

Association development Committee

The Association Development Committee (ADC) is the platform for the professionals (national directors) involved in the national associations. Purpose of the ADC is to provide a collaborative platform between ECMA and the national carton associations, but also bilaterally or multilaterally between individual national associations and with Pro Carton.

The idea behind the ADC is that ECMA and the national associations strengthen each other and that the job to be done is divided among the partners in a clever way. For instance it is very important that best practices are shared and that common tasks are performed both on a European and national level.

The national associations can benefi t from knowledge generated on a European scale and make the translation and implementation towards their local community. As such the ADC performs a ‘multiplier’ role: by sharing know-how, expertise and (human) resources across borders, double work can be avoided and scarce combined resources (time and budgets) can be used more effectively for the common benefi t of the entire European folding carton industry.

In the year 2013 a successful Kick-Off meeting was organised (30 people attended) in Warsaw during Packaging Innovations on the 11th of April to start a Polish national Carton makers Association. Later in the year the offi cial establishment of the national association was completed (see also page 23). The representatives of the Polish association will join the future meetings of the ECMA Association Development Committee.

In the meeting of the ADC in Madrid in May 2013 the good contacts were maintained and contacts were established with the new representative of the French association for folding carton Julien Zeh. An important issue taken up was to determine and increase the ECMA value proposition towards the national associations. A fi rst step in this respect was the introduction of the ECMA Headlines for Directors National Associations. As a next step a questionnaire was sent out and discussed together and a matrix with answers and points of attention was developed. Overall aim for this exercise: How and where to strengthening each other.

An important outcome of the exercise was the idea to develop ECMA fact sheet documents with a summary of the status or developments concerning important issues. These documents will be part of a Tool Kit and are to be used on subjects of key interest to f.i. customers. The content will be developed under the jurisdiction of the ECMA Marketing and Communications Committee, and the delivery will be done in collaboration with the national associations.

During the ADC-meetings the members present issues they are facing and together they establish best practices. Also in the meeting of the ADC in Brussels in December 2013 many thoughts and ideas were shared. In this meeting a special presentation was delivered by Neal Whipp of BPIF Cartons about the achievements and developments in the UK.

The liaison from the ADC’s to the Executive Committee is Christian Schiffers (FFI, D). Martin Widermann of the Austrian carton association PPV was elected to chair the ADC meetings, supported by ECMA Managing Director Hans van Schaik.

Business development Committee

The Business Networking Committee is the umbrella that coordinates the ECMA forums. The coordination of activities and membership programmes happens in close contact with the chairmen of the different forums.

Business Development Committee chair Alican Duran has spoken at the Congress in Dubrovnik with all chairmen of the different ECMA forums to see what kind of support is needed. Also the fi rst contacts were made at the congress with potential working group members to set up the new Young Leaders Forum. The Young Leaders Forum will be the meeting place for the next generation of industry leaders and an important asset for ECMA.

In 2014 the Business Development Committee and the Marketing and Communications Committee will work together to organise a business seminar around the ECMA Sales Toolkit.

The Business Development Committee is chaired by Alican Duran (Duran Dogan Printing and Packaging) and supported by Hans van Schaik (ECMA) and Rogier Krabbendam (ECMA).

Pharma Forum

The members of the Pharma Forum meet twice a year in Amsterdam (The Netherlands) and the number of companies actively involved is still growing. The Pharma Forum was able to attract new members and has invited several potential members to its meetings to give them a better understanding of the forum. The goal is to attract more converters from Southern Europe. It’s important for the development o the forum and quality of the discussions to have all relevant markets represented.

There are many interesting developments in the pharmaceutical industry happening at customer level. But also on converter level acquisitions and further consolidation have an impact on the market. At the November meeting Moorgate Capital presented their view on ‘M&A in the Pharmaceutical Packaging Industry’. This resulted into a very interesting discussion that helped the participants to have a better understanding of the market, the driving factors for growth, what is attracting acquirers to the pharmaceutical packaging market and the outlook for the segment.

It was decided to have the next meeting of the Pharma Forum end of April 2014 in Istanbul, which will be hosted by Cömertler.

The Pharma Form is chaired by Roel van Eerd ( Van Eerd B.V.) and supported by Rogier Krabbendam (ECMA).

sme Forum

The SME Forum has started an internal discussion on how to attract more small and medium sized companies to the SME Forum and also to ECMA. The structure for ‘the new ECMA’ was introduced with the idea to involve more SME companies with ECMA.

The successful benchmarking system, which is currently one of the most important tools, will be evaluated together with the rest of the forum’s proposition. In December 2013 two representatives of the SME Forum discussed their ideas and some different scenarios for the forum with the members of the Executive

Committee. The year 2014 will be important to redevelop the forum.

The SME Forum is chaired by Vic Acket (Acket drukkerij kartonnage B.V.) and Robert Davison (Alexir Packaging Ltd.) and supported by Rogier Krabbendam (ECMA).

suppliers Forum

The members of the Suppliers Forum have been actively involved with the preparations of the 2013 congress working programme.

At the beginning of 2013 it was agreed that for each MCC meeting two individual suppliers would be invited to involve them with the development of activities and programmes and to represent the specifi c supplier interests. Networking and sponsoring activities are being developed together with the Supplier Forum

to make sure these initiatives match the expectations of our supplier members.

During the ECMA Congress in Dubrovnik a back-to-back meeting was organised with the MCC. This will be continued at the 2014 congress.

The Supplier Forum is chaired by Jan de Roeck (ESKO) and supported by Rogier Krabbendam (ECMA).

Young Leaders Forum

The Young Leaders Forum drives ECMA’s activities aimed at the next generation of folding carton industry leaders. ECMA wants to involve the next generation with its activities and objectives, and prepare them to take over from the current leadership.

At the end of 2013 a small working group was installed to set up the Young Leaders Forum. After some teleconferences the goals and target group for the forum were better defi ned and potential members were contacted. The idea is to attract an ambassador for each country. The national associations were asked to liaise with young leaders

employed by their national member companies. Young managers from (family owned) SME converters from both direct and indirect members are the main target group and are invited to join the forum.

In 2014 a fi rst meeting will be organised together with the Business Development Committee to kick-of the Young Leaders Forum.

Gemma Bond en Shaun Bond (both from Firstan) and Tom Acket (Acket drukkerij kartonnage) are part of the working group coordinating the establishment of the Young Leaders Forum and are supported by Rogier Krabbendam (ECMA).

tobacco Forum

The ECMA Tobacco Forum already exists for approximately 13 years and functions as a pan-European collaborative platform for specialists in the tobacco packaging industry. The Forum addressed during its existence a number of issues of common concern to this specifi c market segment, such as market statistics, board specifi cations & quality, service defi nitions, e-trading terms and anti-counterfeiting. The focus during the recent time was very much on the political process within the European Community to revise the Tobacco Products Directive (TPD2) and on developments in the UK concerning “standardized packaging”.

The year 2013 was very crucial to bring forward the packaging industry’s knowledge and arguments. On numeral occasions contacts were established with important decision making authorities and politicians in “Brussels”, the UK and also nationally throughout the EU member states. The expert activities of the Tobacco Forum focus in great extent on the impact of proposals on counterfeiting in the EU and how this in turn may touch upon EU health policy and the EU Packaging industry. A key concern in this respect is that the new regulation on packaging will eliminate complexity and will result in an increase in the illicit trade and will bring harm to responsible manufacturing in the EU and will cause losses of jobs related.

The Tobacco Forum was professionally assisted in this by public affairs consultant Interel, based in Brussels, London, and Berlin. The year 2013 was very crucial because of the fact that the EU Commission put on the table for the European Parliament its proposals concerning the revision of the TPD2. The input from the Tobacco Forum was especially tailored on the Members of the European Parliament, the various relevant committees and on the different member states. The Tobacco Forum has vigorously made an important contribution to the public debate between policy makers and stakeholders in fi nding the right balance between public health, anti-counterfeiting and the carton sector’s own economic interest.

The Key messages:• WesupporttheCommission’sobjectives:protectconsumer

health and harmonise regulation in the Internal Market. While the Commission has acknowledged the threat that illicit trade poses, i.e. by including mandatory security features on tobacco packs, it should also fully recognise that these features should be a complement to packaging complexity and not a substitute for it. A failure would undermine the public health objectives of the proposal by making it easier for unregulated counterfeit products to be manufactured and distributed in the EU.

• Thecomplexityoftobaccopackagingisthefirstandbestlineof defense against counterfeiting. It is the hi-tech printing, enhanced design features and the constant updating of the package design and also package shape, which pose substantial and expensive barriers to counterfeiting.

• Measuresdesignedtostandardizepacksandremovecomplexity will benefi t counterfeit producers and unnecessarily damage the EU packaging industry, which we believe is not the intended target of these measures. Such damage includes loss of jobs, potentially plant rationalizations and lower tax revenue.

• Thesizeofgraphicalhealthwarningsonpackagingshouldleave the packaging industry minimal space to add packaging complexity which is the fi rst and best line of defence against counterfeit.

• Itwouldbewrongrequiringtobaccopackstobestandardisedas a ‘cuboid shape’. This would prevent the industry from manufacturing packs with bevelled or rounded edges – a critical element of packaging complexity and one of the hardest parts of a pack for counterfeiters to replicate.

• Itseemsobviousthatthemorestandardisedapackbecomesthe cheaper and easier it is to manufacture. That is not good news for the specialised packaging companies or the skilled people that work there to produce high-quality complex packaging products, but it is good news for counterfeit producers who will enjoy substantially lower barriers to entry than currently exist.

• Toremovecomplexityfrompackagingwillsucceedinhurtingthe packaging industry and aiding illicit trade; this outcome is in nobody’s interest.

The members of the Tobacco Forum have met during teleconferences and physical meetings about twice a month. The Tobacco Forum is chaired by Jerzy Czubak (Amcor Packaging) and supported by Hans van Schaik (ECMA).

Launched in September 2011 the ECMA GMP is in the supply chain ever more recognized as a decisive tool to demonstrate compliance with the Food Contact Framework Regulation EC No. 1935/2004 and the GMP Regulation EC No. 2023/2006.

To allow a further spread of the safety guidance, the publically available GMP document in 2013 became in close collaboration with the concerned national associations (FFI, GIFASP, ASPACK, FFC and Ecmabel) additionally available in German, Italian, Spanish and French. All languages can be downloaded from the ECMA website. The availability of different language versions is good to both the industry and the partners in the supply chain.

The initial text was also slightly adapted. A so called Version 1.1 of the GMP taking in account the comments obtained from FoodDrinkEurope, was approved in December. All self-declared compliant companies are listed on the ECMA website.

eCmA ConGress 2013: ‘the seArCh For GroWth’ A report by Richard Dalgleish - First published in Folding Carton Industry November/December 2013 edition

Around 150 delegates attended the 46th ECMA Annual Congress which was held in Dubrovnik. In welcoming delegates to the congress, the President of ECMA, Andreas Blaschke of Mayr-Melnhof Packaging said that ECMA were delighted to be in Dubrovnik for the second time and this time especially as Croatia had become a member of the EU in July this year. He said that the title of the Congress was “The search for growth” and Blaschke felt sure that delegates would hear a range of fascinating presentations that would help them and their businesses fi nd growth in the coming years.

Three years ago - during ECMA’s 50th anniversary – members had, he said, recognised the need for a repositioning and restructuring of the association. As regards the 5 major business horizons they set at that time - Sustainability, Product Safety, Industry Positioning, Profi tability and their own Association Structure - ECMA was well on its way. The association is, he argued, now ready to take stock and to defi ne its course for the next challenging stage of their trip: to provide support for members in the quest for a stable business environment, reliable regulatory framework and the provision of a forum for European and global industry contacts.

Blaschke also said that he was delighted that Pro Carton had decided to celebrate their 25th Anniversary at this congress and he congratulated them on reaching such an important milestone and wished them well in the future. A report on the Pro Caron anniversary appears elsewhere in this issue.

Croatia overviewThe Congress opened with an overview of Croatia and its economy, given by Fedja Vukić from the University of Zagreb. He said that Croatia was delighted to become a member of the EU and felt that it had a great deal to offer. The country was well positioned at the centre of Europe and was expanding fast, but much of the growth was in the service sector, particularly in tourism. Employment levels in manufacturing had been falling and it was important that they looked for ways to improve the situation and develop the manufacturing part of the economy.

Future GrowthEd Garner, the Communications Director of Kantar Worldpanel (UK), gave a fascinating presentation on the retail sector and where future growth for the packaging sector was most likely. He felt that there were signs of recovery showing in EU consumer confi dence but that consumers were reacting to price increases by trading down in several areas. This was, he said, evident in most European countries whereas this was not the same in countries such as China and Brazil where consumers were, in general, trading up. The deep discount supermarkets had shown dramatic growth prior to 2009 and while this had slowed somewhat, their share of the total market in Europe continued to grow and had now reached over 18%. This varied from country to country with the UK having the lowest share, but this was now growing rapidly and he suggested that in the UK the annual growth of the deep discount chains was at about 20% per annum. This compared with about 10% for Waitrose and less that 5% for the big 4 supermarket chains. He talked of the “theatre of retailing” that was being increasingly used to attract consumers and the growth of the private label business, especially in the UK where, in most cases supermarkets had two or three different own brands. The private label share in the UK stood at about 46%, much higher than in Italy where it was only around 9%.

Garner felt that amongst the best opportunities for carton makers were markets such as pet food with the switching from cans to pouches packed in cartons, the growth of chilled and frozen pizzas, the developing healthy biscuit market and the introduction of crisps and snacks packed in cartons.

Carton AwardsAt the Pro Carton sponsored session on Thursday morning, the winners of the individual categories in the 2013 Pro Carton / ECMA Carton awards were announced and presented by Roland Rex, the Chairman of Pro Carton and Andreas Blaschke the President of Pro Carton. A full report on the 2013 award winners appears elsewhere in this issue.

Life PatternsUnder the title “The Slower You Move, the Faster You Die”, Dr. David Bosshart, CEO of the Gottleib Duttweiler Institute for Economic Studies in Zurich, said that life patterns were constantly changing and the most radical change was that people were doing everything faster. They were eating faster

Page 13: Annual Review 2013 - ECMAecma.com.pl/userfiles/file/publikacje/ECMA_Annual... · safety and sustainability and a presentation of best practices and membership activities by Neal Whipp,

and generally living faster. This led to huge changes, many of which were driven by the dramatic growth in technology. New behavioral patterns were developing that meant people wanted instant gratifi cation – “see it now, want it now”. He said that too much information and too little time often led to bad decision making and choice avoidance. Simplicity was important to overcome this. The opportunities for growth lay in understanding these behavioral changes so that creativity could be handled faster, leading to a speed up in thinking, communication, decision making and operations.

european statisticsThe Managing Director of ECMA, Hans van Schaik, then gave an overview of the carton market in Europe. Output had fallen in 2012 by 1.3% but in 2013 growth was expected at about 0.4%. There were signifi cant differences between countries with Southern Europe still suffering from the depressed economic conditions and Switzerland being held back by the strength of the Swiss Franc. In contrast Turkey was being helped by the decline in the parity of the Lira and in the Netherlands, carton manufacturers continue to outperform GDP. He fi nished by saying that the prospects for the period 2012 – 2017 were looking brighter with growth in carton output forecast overall at around 7% over the fi ve years.

nestlé spendIn explaining the background to his paper, Rachid Gamal, the Head of Global Packaging Performance at Nestlé, said that their global spend on packaging was around 7.4 billion Swiss Francs and this equated to 4.5 million tonnes of packaging materials. Talking from a more technical viewpoint, he said that the conventional defi nition of quality was the ability of a product or service to satisfy customer expectations. He felt however, that a better defi nition is that quality is what each customer or consumer says it is. He said that it was vital to put the consumer at the centre of all packaging developments and that the key to this was to ensure there is excellent collaboration between all partners in the packaging supply chain.

Also from Nestlé, Paul Pickard the Head of Procurement Zone Europe, said that packaging had a variety of requirements. Apart from protecting the contents, it helped to differentiate products, it communicated to the consumer and it needed to be functional. On the communication aspect he said that when little or no advertising investment was planned, the shelf at the retailer is the key with packaging helping to communicate what the brand owner needs to tell the consumer. In order to keep growing, the packaging industry and Nestlé need to work together to value what the customer values and to jointly understand that cost and innovation count in equal measure. Sustainability is, he said, the ticket to entry and carton makers need to “think outside the box”.

Global outlookKen Waghorne the Vice President of Global Packaging at RISI gave a paper on the global outlook for cartonboard. He started by detailing the defi nitions they had chosen and said that the sector was one of the strongest growth areas in the paper and board industry with global growth between 2013 and 2015 forecast to be between 3% and 5.5% per annum. Of the 53 million tonnes used in 2012, 45% was consumed in Asia with 25% in Europe and

22% in North America. Per capita consumption varied widely with Western Europe consuming about 2.5 times as much per person as in China. While Asian growth had fallen back in 2012, it was expected to rebound between 2013 and 2015 and to service this growth the total announced cartonboard capacity increase in China between 2013 and 2014 will amount to over 7 million tonnes. He said that the new capacity, especially in virgin grades, would outstrip the growth in home demand, and as a result, China’s trade surplus in virgin base cartonboard would grow through to 2015 with European folding boxboard producers facing increased global competition from China in the coming years.

Paul de Ruijter, who also acted as moderator for the Congress, gave his view of scenarios for growth and in a wide ranging presentation said that there was a movement toward the east for both cost and market reasons. He queried where this will go in the future and felt that it was possible that Africa would see growth in the future due to the signifi cant investments being made there by Malaysia, China and India. He saw Africa as a good opportunity for growth but also questioned if the requirements for shorter lead times, and the recent food safety issues, would possibly lead to de-globalisation. Demographics were also forcing changes with an increasing number of older and single consumers.

double impactDecisions made by the EU can have a signifi cant impact on packaging producers and Kieran O’Keeffe, a Managing Partner in Interel, said that these fell into two categories. The direct impacts came through product specifi cations such as labelling, food safety and sustainability regulations whereas indirect impacts were caused through employment law, trade policy and access to fi nance. He reminded attendees that everything would change in 2014 with the elections and said that one of the EU’s main concerns was with public health - including food safety. This was of great concern as Europe comprises only one eighth of the total world population, yet has about one quarter of the total global cancer cases, thought to be due to an unhealthy lifestyle. As a result, greater clarity of future labelling would be introduced which would impact packaging. Resource effi ciency was also a major plank of EU policy and elements such as sustainable production and consumption, the 7th Environmental Action Plan and the Waste Framework directive would continue to impact on the packaging sector.

Current ProspectsMarc de Vos, who spoke at ECMA in 2012, returned again and argued that in his view the future for growth has seldom looked better. He argued that the substantial growth seen in the recent past was fuelled by unsustainable debt and that the current growth prospects were good. He argued that globalisation slows innovation and polarises further, but that this could change and that we need growth more now than in the past. The huge impact of the number of the “baby boomer” generation would impact on growth as they had more money to spend and this gave him cause for optimism for the future.

Committee inputAnnual updates on the activities of the various committees operating within ECMA are now traditional at this Congress and so the congress heard updates on what had been achieved during the past year from the Marketing and Communications Committee, the Association Development Committee and the Business Development Committee. In addition, updates were given by the Technical Committee and fi nally by the Tobacco Forum which updated Congress on the status of the activities surrounding the proposed tobacco legislation in Europe. Full updates on all Committees and Forums can be found elsewhere in this issue.

Breakout sessionsThe familiar breakout sessions were also included in the programme which give a variety of suppliers to the industry the opportunity to update those attending on the latest developments they are offering to the carton manufacturing sector. Also in a fi rst at the ECMA Congress, Lennart Aveling, the Director of Machine Systems at A&R Carton, led a workshop at which all delegates were engaged practically in the “ECMA Lego game” in which fun and learning by doing were combined. Teams of 8 competed against each other to “manufacture product” using Lego bricks to represent the product and competition became ever more fi erce as the exercise progressed with one team fi nally winning a prize for the greatest profi t made over the course of the game. This was a stimulating and worthwhile exercise that engaged those attending all of whom said that they had all learnt something from it.

In closing the Congress Andreas Blaschke thanked the speakers, sponsors and the delegates and hoped that all those present would be taking away with them new ideas and thoughts. He confi rmed that the 2014 Congress will take place in Sorrento between 17th and 19th September and will, for the fi rst time, be a joint Congress with Pro Carton.

eCmA – Pro Carton Congress 2014

For the fi rst time ECMA and Pro Carton will join forces and are working together on next year’s event which will be held from 17-20 September in Sorrento, Italy.

You will receive more information on the programme as soon as it is available and of course this can also be found on the ECMA website but please already mark your calendars for 17-20 September 2014.

outcome for 2012, Forecasts for 2013Overall for the European countries under review, following a good recovery in 2011, European carton output declined by -/-1.3% in 2012 to a net volume of 4.224 million tonnes. Sales value declined by -/- 0.8%, bringing the total recorded amount of cartons sold converted to Euros at € 8.825 million.

GDP forecasts have been downgraded from the previous estimate of +1.1% to +0.3%. Following 18 months of recession the European economy grew by 0.3% in Q2 2013. Signs of improvement are evident in the Eurozone economies with the European Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI). After a promising start, folding carton output fell down in the second quarter 2013. Carton output by the end of 2013 was forecasted to be up by 0.4% with sales value increasing by 0.7%.

Key Country trends – 2012 and 2013There are substantial variations in country prospects. Southern Europe is suffering from depressed economic conditions. Switzerland is continuing to suffer from a strong Swiss Franc. In contrast, Turkey is helped by decline in the parity of the Lira. Output in France is suffering a decline over 3 consecutive years, refl ecting a continued decline in business confi dence. In contrast, Dutch converters continue to outperform GDP.

Long-term trends and ForecastsCarton output declined by an overall -/-5% over the 5 years 2007 to 2012, refl ecting the impact of the 2008/09 recession. This compares with the decline in cartonboard purchases of -/-6%. The year-by-year differences in carton output and cartonboard purchases arise out of short term stock changes, created by changing delivery lead times and the changing supply of cartonboards from non traditional sources. The prospects for 2012 to 2017 look brighter, with growth in carton output forecast at an overall 7% with cartonboard purchases up by an overall 8%.

Comparisons Between Carton output and sales ValueA decline in carton output of -/-5% for 2007 to 2013 was matched by a decline in sales value of -/-6%. The market has remained fi ercely competitive in recent years, with pressure on sales prices, despite increased input costs. Output and sales value are expected to increase by an overall 7% over the next 5 years.

Key Country differences: incremental Carton output and sales Value for 2012 to 2017The top fi ve countries – Germany, Turkey, Netherlands, UK and France – account for 80% of incremental (additional) output and 75% of incremental value. The main country differences arise out of differing average values per tonne.

Key Country differences: Carton Value per tonne: The average value per tonne varies from €3.733 (Switzerland) to €1.571 (Turkey). Average values are infl uenced by the relative share of food vs non food markets, especially pharma. Also the parity between the Euro and local currencies and the production effi ciency and unit costs of local carton makers are of infl uence.

Factors infl uencing Foods vs non Foods splitOver the longer term, for the past 10 years there has been virtually no change in the relative shares of food versus non food markets. There are however signifi cant country differences, with food accounting for 34% of the market in Austria and 66% of the market in the UK. Non food markets marginally increased share up to 2009, with the development of new applications for cartons. Since then, the trend has been reversed, infl uenced by limited levels of consumer disposable income and a decline in expenditure on luxury and high ticket items… with the food markets remaining fairly recession proof.

in conclusion European carton makers still face diffi cult market conditions. However, the growth prospects for the next 5 years – at +1.3% p.a. – are signifi cantly better than the -/-1.3% p.a. decline for the last 5 years (infl uenced largely by the 2008/09 recession). Major differences between the various countries and markets “you cannot average”. Differences also exist between the individual converters. Companies with clear market focus and vision, lean manufacturing and continued investment to achieve these aims, are likely to perform (far) better than their peer group competitors.Up-to-date and reliable market statistics, forecasts and performance benchmarking can help ECMA members to “raise the bar” and improve their performance.

‘Go eAst!’: eCmA inVoLVes CentrAL And eAstern eUroPeAn mArKets

The nineteenth century quote “Go West, young man” was a rallying cry for the colonization of the American West, where pioneers explored ‘The Frontier’, a transition zone. In the European Union, the frontier is the region beyond the expanding borders of the European Union itself. Which means also the focus of our industry has moved eastwards. After the focus had been for many years on the more mature Western European markets, ECMA has recently diverted part of its focus towards the emerging Central and Eastern European markets. This is part of the transition of our industry, where the importance of emerging markets, acquisitions and consolidation and globalisation will become more eminent each day.

ECMA actively supports the establishment of new national folding carton converter associations in emerging markets.

eCmA PolskaThe founding meeting of ECMA Polska took place on 28 November 2013. The meeting was organized by Marek Roszak (Edelmann Poland) and Olaf Kacperski (MMP Neupack Polska) who have taken the initiative to establish ECMA Polska after the kick-off meeting ECMA had organised on 13 April 2013. Over 20 converters and all key suppliers gathered for the founding of ECMA Polska.

All the participants signed in and elected a Founding Committee, which will proceed with all legal issues of registration and prepare the content of the fi rst working meeting which was planned for spring 2014. This will also be an election meeting for Management Board and Supervisory Committee of the newly formed association. ECMA congratulates the Polish converters with the establishment of ECMA Polska and has offered to actively support future initiatives and meetings.

other initiativesThe Association Development Committee has decided to organise its next meeting on 20 February 2014 in Bucharest, Romania kindly hosted by the Romanian national converter association APRA. The Bulgarian converters will also be involved to see how ECMA could involve them on a European level. Finally, ECMA has decided for 2014 to also try to involve the Russian market. Many multinational converter companies have already moved into this market, and ECMA should follow.

Pro CArton neWs - Winners Pro CArton/ eCmA CArton AWArd 2013

The Pro Carton/ECMA Award 2013 was a tremendous success. The interest in new ideas in the field of cartonboard and cartons has increased considerably, as demonstrated by the entries: nearly one third of the entries were new to the competition – never before had there been that many newcomers to the Award. The Awards were presented on 19 September 2013 at the ECMA Congress in Dubrovnik. Carton of the Year was awarded to the Twinkle Box champagne packaging by Van Genechten.

The time had finally come on 19 September at the ECMA Congress in Dubrovnik: the finalists in the eight categories had already been decided in August – and now it was time to announce the winners. The presentation of the awards in the individual categories was one of the highlights during the day’s programme. In the evening, suspense reached its climax: a show act by the group “Serpentes” enriched the presentation of the three main awards: Carton of the Year, Most Innovative, Sustainability, as well as the President’s Special Award recommended by the Jury. Backdrop to the glamorous gala evening was a romantic courtyard in the Old Town of Dubrovnik. The certificates and trophies were presented by Roland Rex, President Pro Carton, and Dr. Andreas Blaschke, President ECMA.

Twinkle Box by Van Genechten won the Carton of the Year. The diamond pattern makes the packaging unmistakeable, and the distinguished ribbon for carrying conveys an air of casual chic. The box keeps the champagne chilled for up to two hours and preserves the exceptional qualities of the contents. The Twinkle Box only covers approximately two thirds of the bottle – a novelty in the world of champagne. The champagne can be poured directly, the bottle remains in the chilled box. Quite simply the perfect refreshment for a summer garden party – or as a gift for glittering moments.

The most innovative cartonboard solution this year emulates the function of an age-old metal construction: the paper clip from the year 1867. A sustainable alternative for a classic product which works just as well and costs just as little. The Deltaclip was created by Schut Hoes Cartons and Deltaclip International. The extremely small product is manufactured in large quantities and folded asymmetrically: a challenge for production and a brilliant solution by Schut Hoes.

Maximum sustainability was the jury’s verdict for a cylindrical, resealable container, which presents chocolate sticks like a bouquet of flowers when opened. To ensure optimal quality of the contents, Van Genechten selected a compound material made of coated cartonboard and a metalized foil which offered the appropriate barrier properties. The carton can be recycled normally despite the coating. The result: a colourful eye-catcher on the shelf, and highly sustainable in terms of production, shipping and recycling.

The President’s Special Award was conveyed by the jury to a packaging by Karl Knauer, which employs new technology to make the carton even more attractive at the point of sale: “ The Bombay Sapphire packaging is an excellent carton which meets all the

requirements of the beverages sector. In addition, it integrates an LED system which is activated when held. If does not light up instantly, but gradually, and remains lit for several seconds.”

As always, the jury represented the Packaging Supply Chain:• Satkar Gidda (SiebertHead) again acted as chairman and

represented design aspects.• Stan Akkermans (Mars) also represented the standpoint of

brand owners again.• Wilfried Duivenvoorden (Unilever) was a new member of the

jury and represented the branded goods industry.• Anne Harding (Marks & Spencer) was also new to the jury and

added new impulses as expert in the retail trade.• Peter Klein Sprokkelhorst (packaging industry) again advised

the jury on the technical refinements of the submitted cartons.

Satkar Gidda on the jury’s work: “It is fair to say that this was a very intensive judging session, simply because the quality of the entries caused much debate What was remarked more than once was the attention to detail in many of the entries and we could see that consumer benefit, functional, aesthetic or both, had been considered. We saw total integrated thinking such as carrying the product characteristics through onto the packaging which serves perfectly to help communicate the brand values and brand qualities.”

Pro Carton / eCmA Carton Award 2014

All partners in the Packaging Supply Chain – designers, brand owners, the retail trade as well as the cartonboard and carton industry – are more than welcome to (again) submit entries for the Award in the coming year.

As always, the date for submission starts at the end of February until the 6th of June 2014 as final deadline. Finalist will be announced on the Pro Carton / ECMA Carton Award website in August 2013. The Award ceremony with the announcement of the winners will take place during the ECMA – Pro Carton Congress in Sorrento, 17 – 20 September 2014.

We are looking forward to your entries. For further information please contact [email protected].

Pro CArton neWs - 25 YeArs Pro CArton: LooKinG into the FUtUre

For 25 years, Pro Carton has been tasked with communicating the benefi ts of cartonboard and cartons. The entire Packaging Supply Chain is supplied with current information and studies. The anniversary was the occasion for a festive gala evening on 19 September in Dubrovnik, at which President Roland Rex looked at the coming 25 years.

It was the 3rd of June 1988 in London’s Cumberland Hotel: leading managers of the cartonboard and carton industry from all over Europe decided to found an association to represent their interests: Pro Carton. It was the fi rst association in the entire paper and cartonboard fi eld devoted solely to those products for which they stood. It was the fi rst time that two sectors in the supply chain collaborated to convey a broader perspective and greater knowledge about the business they represented. A pioneering approach: the list of the founding members reads like the Who’s Who of the industry. Today, Pro Carton counts 15 manufacturers of cartonboard as members, nearly the entire European cartonboard industry as well as the European carton industry via the ECMA partner organisation. sustainable developmentOn the occasion, the current president of Pro Carton, Roland Rex, invited representatives of the cartonboard and carton industries to a festive dinner in Dubrovnik on 19 September 2013. Nearly all the previous presidents attended the gala. Rex thanked his predecessors for their commitment and willingness to take on the responsibility for an industry sector, in fact an entire supply chain. In particular, he honoured the services of founding president Franz Rappold of Mayr-Melnhof Karton who was actively involved from the beginning. Pro Carton was and remains the fi rst organisation which is greatly involved in the future of the supply chain. Again and again, Pro Carton has critically examined its role and proven its sustainability, partly through radical structural changes. In his speech at the Pro Carton Dinner, the president underlined that changes also always offer positive aspects. “One refocuses on the core tasks and drives new developments, especially in the right direction.” Today, he sees Pro Carton as being a strong organisation with numerous activities in tune with the requirements of modern marketing and well equipped to handle the challenges of the next 25 years. Future challengesPro Carton has delivered continuity over 25 years as a reliable partner of the Packaging Supply Chain. The association will continue being closely involved in

the developments of the next 25 years: challenges such as the current changes in the retail trade, innovations such as Internet-linking via QR-Codes will be addressed and discussed by experts.

With the Pro Carton / ECMA Award and the Pro Carton Design Award as well as studies on the role and tasks of packaging, Pro Carton continues to drive this development. Current trends and designs are accessible to interested parties throughout Europe via the ECMA / Pro Carton Congress as well as the website www.procarton.com and regular E-news in fi ve languages – the Pro Carton E-News has over 9,000 subscribers at present.

He gave a tongue in cheek future vision of Pro Carton. In fi ve years Europe would experience a phase of solid growth. Sales of cartons would show double digit growth and the Pro Carton/ECMA Award would attain new record levels with 250 entries– “an unsurpassed show of performance by our industry”. In 15 years, cartons would be regarded by the branded goods industry and the advertising community as the most superior of marketing instruments, and the annual Pro Carton Congress would welcome 1,500 attendants. “In 25 years cartons made of cartonboard would be the fi rst and only absolutely climate and resource-neutral form of primary packaging. The Pro Carton hall at the Interpack 2038 is the meeting point of the packaging industry and will deliver an incomparable showcase of the most sustainable and signifi cant means of packaging in existence on a fl oor space of 2,500 m² “. “Even if this vision cannot be achieved 100 per cent: the goals are important and we will stick to them”, said Pro Carton President Roland Rex in conclusion.

to encourage healthy business conditions for the folding carton industry’The fi rst of the 5 objectives of the ECMA Roadmap was ‘to encourage the European folding carton industry to raise the bar and improve its overall fi nancial and operational performance on an international scale’. ECMA’s ‘Sales Toolkit’ is an essential part of our association’s business value proposition, to support our members in creating a healthy business environment on a European scale.

The toolkit consists out of ECMA Sales Support Tools, Fact Sheets and Headlines.

eCmA sales support toolsThese tools help the company staff in their contact and discussions with customers.

• TermsandConditions(transactional)An update is planned of the ECMA Terms and Conditions of Sale

• OtherSalesSupportTools(specificelements)Other tools that are available are the Braille on Folding Cartons Guide, the ECMA Code of Folding Carton Design Styles and ECMA Food Safety Good Manufacturing Practice Guide. These are all developed to explain the main developments and issues of our industry towards customers.

eCmA Fact sheets Fact Sheets should offer your Sales Staff in one A4 sheet a better understanding of a certain topic or issue to be used in their communication with the customer. They have been categorised as Benefi ts, Environment, Board Manufacture and Challenges and Myths. Our industry should speak the same languagetowards our customers and other stakeholders.

The management of our member companies will have to support this initiative and promote it within their own companies to have it widely adopted and to make the ‘ECMA Sales Toolkit’ a big success!

ecmabel

The Belgian Carton Makers Association, part of the Belgian paper and board umbrella federation FETRA, organized last year two regular carton maker meetings and one broader annual supply chain meeting.

Aside the recurrent topics covered in the national meetings (the economic and market trends, the annual sector analysis, reports

on the ECMA and Pro Carton initiatives, food safety, the national EPR system FOST Plus, information on the labour negotiations), Ecmabel was in 2013 particularly looking into, the possibilities to ensure the recall risk, the overall safety of packaging concepts in which cartons are involved and was also benchmarking on the level of food safety information obtained from suppliers.

Chaired by John de Somer (Van Genechten Packaging), the association continues to be successful, with well attended meetings and new members joining.

Highlight of this year’s activity was again the supply chain meeting held on 14 November. With this year three guest speakers the meeting had entirely the character of an afternoon seminar.

25 years Pro Carton was certainly an excellent occasion to have again a presentation on the strategy and projects of Pro Carton by Suzanne Mc Ewen. The food safety of corrugated transport packaging and the barriers on the reverse side of cartons or offered by an inner bag were the other contributions by Eric Savary (Smurfi t Kappa France) and Jan Switten (Switten Training & Advice).

BPiF Carton Presents: Welcome to CartonvilleComing soon…

Explore ‘Cartonville’ - this virtual tour shows the life-cycle of a typical folding carton. Select each area and understand the steps a carton will take from the forest and board mill to the supermarket. Learn how they are recycled and how the material is reused to package many of the trusted brands we all love and enjoy.

Cartonville is full of useful facts, even a few surprises. Cartonville is especially useful for students or brand-owners who want to fi nd out more about this natural material.

Cartonville will be launched at the end of February. For more information please contact Neal Whipp from BPIF Cartons at [email protected].

relaunch of FFi „Quality characteristics of cartonboards“

From the beginning of 2014 FFI member companies will order cartonboard per sheet and will receive lots provided with an accurate number of sheets. Until now German folding carton producers had to order supply quantities per weight.

This remarkable system change is one of the main achievements of a constructive discussion on the new edition of the FFI “Quality characteristics of cartonboards“ with the German CEPI Cartonboard branch organization VMK Vereinigung Maschinenkarton over the last 1,5 years.

The last edition of this collection of quantity and technical parameters dated from 1998. In order to learn and to get familiar with the new “order of sheets system” FFI and VMK started a project to check sheet tolerances per lot/palettes.

Vouwkarton Platform nederland

The newly founded folding carton platform for The Netherlands (Vouwkarton Platform Nederland) had a very successful start in 2013. Starting at just over 20 members the number of members was doubled in the fi rst year of its existence. Many new converters and suppliers joined the platform.

A new website was launched and a marketing committee installed to develop a communication strategy to target our main target groups (brand owners, retail and designers).

The platform organised well-attended member meetings, company visits to Plantin in Brussels and Mayr-Melnhof in Eerbeek, an introduction course for new employees in the folding carton industry and an annual networking day.

Vouwkarton Platform Nederland was also represented with a booth at the Dutch edition of Packaging Innovations Fair organised by easyFairs in Amsterdam. At the booth the winners of the Pro Carton/ECMA Award competition were shown as part of the European ECMA /Pro Carton Award Road Show. Together with a design agency a presentation was given at PI 2013 to promote the many possibilities, sustainable benefi ts and the creativity cartons offer to our customers and the consumer. Vouwkarton Platform Nederland was kindly supported by Pro Carton, which fruitful partnership will hopefully be continued for many years to come.

All these initiatives and efforts resulted in very positive media attention from the press for the folding carton industry in general and the members of Vouwkarton Platform Nederland.

Authorities examine Leadership, the economy, and Policy at Us’ PPC’s Fall meeting

The Paperboard Packaging Council (PPC) Fall Meeting and Leadership Conference, held from 23-25 October 2013 in Dallas, TX, was attended by close to 250 participants who not only heard from nine industry leaders, but also honoured the winners of the 70th Annual North American Paperboard Packaging Competition. Other highlights included a Texas barbeque at a local dude ranch, where attendees were greeted by a cowgirl on horseback, listened to live country music, and were amazed by cowboy lasso and bullwhip tricks.

Starting the general sessions on Thursday, Claus Bolza-Schünemann, President and CEO of KBA, explained how KBA has succeeded in growing within today’s diffi cult economic, globalized environment. He also stressed the importance of hiring a competent workforce, advising attendees to, “hire the best people and listen to them.”

Donna Harman, President and CEO of the American Forest & Paper Association, next described the progress of the Paper Check-Off Program, and how she believes that it will help grow our already vibrant industry. She also encouraged industry

leaders to advocate in their local areas against Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR).

After lunch, Tim Bohrer, owner of PacAdvantage Consulting, spoke about a recently concluded groundbreaking comparison study between fl exible packaging and paperboard primary packaging units. Bohrer briefl y reviewed the study’s methodology before introducing the results: that lower-weight, plastic-based primary packaging does not necessarily lead to lower non-renewable energy usage or lower greenhouse gas emissions when compared to paperboard. As he told the audience, “Primary package weight does not solely determine whether one package system has a better sustainability profi le compared to another.”

Dr. Jeffrey Rosensweig, Director of the Global Perspectives Program at Emory University and Dr. Marc De Vos, Director of the Itinera Institute next spoke about the economic crisis facing both Europe and the U.S. According to Dr. Rosensweig, the U.S. economy is recovering but due to the ongoing indecision in Washington, DC, the recovery will continue to be a slow one. He also suggested that attendees form detailed contingency plans in preparation for either a recession or a rise in interest rates.

Keynoting Friday morning’s general session was Mary Cooper, Vice President of Account Management at Perception Research Services, who discussed how advancements in technology and

Page 31: Annual Review 2013 - ECMAecma.com.pl/userfiles/file/publikacje/ECMA_Annual... · safety and sustainability and a presentation of best practices and membership activities by Neal Whipp,

3131

changes in shopping habits affects the packaging industry. Mary advised becoming as trend-savvy as possible, noting, “As your company evolves, keep in mind the changing relationships between retailers and manufacturers as well as the current changes in globalization, public health, sustainability, and digital printing.”

Dr. Diana Twede, Professor at Michigan State University, then took the podium to explain how the curriculum of their prestigious packaging school relates to the industry. Dr. Twede also emphasized the need for attendees to support and encourage package design talent with internships as these talented students transition into their professional careers.

Closing out the session was Kelly Jewell, Project Manager at The Forest Trust (TFT), who described how to achieve supply chain transparency through responsible sourcing and product traceability. Kelly pointed out that the most important aspects are knowing where the raw materials for your product come from

and then communicating this to your clients and consumers. The three-day conference concluded with sold-out plant tours of Southern Champion Tray and American Carton Co., in Mansfi eld, TX.

“We’re very pleased with the impressive turnout and the level of expertise offered by our speakers,” noted PPC Chairman Stephen Scherger. “It’s evident that PPC provides valuable insights into the state of the industry for an active, dedicated community of business leaders.”

Dr. Jeff Rosensweig and Dr. Marc de Vos answer audience questions about their predictions for the global economy at PPC’s Fall Meeting in Dallas, TX. Joerg Daehnhardt (right) from Heidelberg moderates the discussion.
