Message from the Board

As we reflect on our recent accomplishments, it is apparent that MEOW Foundation’s work in the community and delivery of programs and services for stray and abandoned cats has enriched the lives of both cats and people. Everyone at MEOW Foundation, from volunteers, donors, grantors, staff and board members shares the success of life saving and life enriching work. In 2013/14, MEOW Foundation assisted 2,204 cats and people through our Adoption, Trap Neuter Return and Spay Neuter Assistance Programs. MEOW Foundation also welcomed our first full time Intake and Shelter Manager, Sandra Henry.

We are pleased that the past year marked a year of continued operation and financial stability for MEOW Foundation. It was also a time of reflection and change as the Board welcomed three new board members and participated in governance sessions to revise our mission and vision and added foundational guiding principles.

In early 2013, the board began the search for a new facility for MEOW Foundation to ensure the continuity of our wonderful foundation and deliver on our promise to build the

first cat only, feline specialized adoption centre in Calgary. In July, 2014, the board fulfilled this promise with

the purchase of a 7,000 SF facility in NE Calgary. We look forward to launching the final phase of our capital campaign in early 2015 to raise the necessary funds to renovate and create a state of the art, best practice shelter model. As we look to a new future and adoption centre, and with the support of you, our community, MEOW Foundation will continue our role as a leader, teacher and innovator in the delivery of services to the most underserved, but most deserving

companion animal, the cat.

volunteer ProfileAnn HermanIt was November of 2012 when the Wee Five found their place, bathing in the sun in the front window of Ann Herman’s warm and loving foster home. The five orphaned kittens spent the next month discovering the world through Ann’s guiding embrace until finding forever homes by Christmas of that year. As of 2014, four more litters have had the privilege of spending their first few months in Ann’s loving care and all have moved into forever homes as well-adjusted, happy kitties.

Ann has watched MEOW Foundation grow from the ground up. When she made the decision to foster, she knew she wanted to dedicate her time to the cats and kittens of MEOW Foundation. Ann takes a hands-on approach when it comes to raising her foster kittens. She takes ample time each day to play, teach and enforce house guidelines. With this level of commitment during the early stages of each kitten’s life, Ann is known for raising well-socialized members of the family.

Through fostering Ann has embraced the joy of learning. “When fostering a litter of kittens you really need to be prepared for the energy level. It takes a lot of patience and follow through,” she says. Over the past two years, Ann has watched many wonders of animal nature unfold before her eyes. Her second litter, which she affectionately called the Sweet Babes, consisted of mom Miss Persia and her three kittens. Shortly thereafter a New Babe, Samantha joined the group as an orphaned kitten and within a few days Miss Persia and her Sweet Babes accepted New Babe as one of their own.

Ann is quick to charm anyone she meets after listing off the adorable nicknames she gives each of her litters. In May of 2013, mom cat Aimee gave birth to her five kittens and Ann promptly named them Aimee’s Brood. While Aimee was hesitant at first, she eventually took in the orphaned Fab Five in October of the same year. Ann takes great care when naming the newborn kittens. She observes their individual personalities and constructs creative names that reflect each of them. A few favourites include Tumaini, which means hope, and TeeGee, which is short for “tention getter”.

Although fostering cats and kittens may not be for everyone, Ann believes that families with children could greatly benefit from the experience. As she says, “What better way for children to learn care and concern than with discipline and responsibility? Children would be gaining a learning experience without realizing they are being taught.” Fostering is a give and take and like Ann, all of our foster parents give these animals everything they’ve got.

On behalf of MEOW Foundation and all the cats and kittens you have cared for, we thank you Ann.

Our devoted Adoption Centre cleaners thoroughly clean the shelter each morning and provide food, water and TLC to all the rescued cats in our care.

Every evening, our feeders provide all the Adoption Centre cats with canned food and loving care. These dedicated volunteers also keep the litter boxes clean and perform light housekeeping duties.

Our socializers are at the Adoption Centre two evenings a week, providing specialized care and attention to shy cats in our care. Their hard work goes a long way in helping every cat become more comfortable with human interaction.

Kids CornerTashaTasha came home on October 10, 2014 and has been Maya’s best buddy ever since. Tasha loves playing with her toys and calls out to her humans when she wants them to join in. Whatever activity Maya unfolds, Tasha needs to be watching on the sidelines and when bedtime comes around, Tasha’s place is right at Maya’s feet.

The two love to take baths together, Maya in the bathtub and Tasha on the side fascinated by the water waves. There is also piano practice, where Tasha feels the only way she can express her individuality is to jump on the keys until adequate attention is received. Their bond is ever growing and everyday Tasha offers Maya new tricks and facets of her delightful personality.

Tiggy went home just before Thanksgiving and settled in with her new family quickly. So quickly that her overwhelming joy for her new family had her purring so hard, it seemed to make her drool! Tiggy loves to play with Elena – she has a fish on a string, and will chase it around the house for hours. Of course, this tires Tiggy out and she insists on resting right on top of you, no matter where you are. She needs to be right in the mix! Elena loves to carry her buddy around and thinks it’s especially hilarious when Tiggy chases sunbeams shimmering on the wall. When their day of play is over, Tiggy’s favourite place to sleep is right up on Elena’s pillow, protecting her best friend and dreaming of what tomorrow may bring.
