It is our great pleasure to share the achievements and activities

of the John curtin school of Medical Research for 2014. A

companion volume, Research Highlights, describing some of our

current research projects, will be posted in December 2015.

I joined the school as Director in october 2014, and I would like

to thank my predecessor, Professor chris Parish, for stepping

into the role of Director in April 2013, and for his leadership of the

school. In 2014, chris was honoured with the title Act citizen of

the Year, and received the chancellor’s Award for Distinguished

contribution to the University. He is to be congratulated for these

stellar achievements, and thanked by all of us for his enduring

dedication to JcsMR.

Many other JcsMR staff and students received honours and

awards during 2014, recognizing the commitment they bring to

their research and teaching practices. In particular I would like

to congratulate Professor carola Vinuesa, who was awarded

the inaugural csL Young Florey Medal for her research in

the immune system and the production of disease fighting

antibodies, and Professor thomas Preiss on the award of the

Julian Wells Medal at the Lorne Genome conference.

JcsMR saw a number of new initiatives come to realization

in 2014. In February we launched the national centre for

Indigenous Genomics, which aims to establish a national

resource, under Indigenous governance, for appropriate and

respectful genetic and genomic research that will benefit

Indigenous Australians, and in April, in conjunction with World

Day of Immunology, we launched the centre for Personalized

Immunology, which aims to help people with immune diseases

by discovering individual genetic variations with the ultimate goal

of targeting treatments more effectively.

the JcsMR Gender equity committee successfully brought

about the establishment and award of the inaugural Judith

Whitworth Fellowship in 2014. this Fellowship, named in honour

of previous JcsMR Director Professor Judith Whitworth, and

supported by JcsMR and the John curtin Medical Research

Foundation has been established to support the return to work

of a young scientist who has experienced a break in their

research career due to maternity or parental leave. We are very

proud of this initiative, and trust that it will allow recipients to re-

establish scientific projects, strengthen track record and regain

national and international competitiveness when applying for

independent external research funding.

I hope that you will enjoy reading about the recent successes

of the school, and look forward to presenting the companion

Research Highlights.

A new national centre for research into Indigenous health will help close the gap on Indigenous health and life expectancy, with the launch of the national centre for Indigenous Genomics in February 2014 at JcsMR.

the national centre for Indigenous Genomics (ncIG) aims to establish a national resource, under Indigenous governance, for appropriate and respectful genetic and genomic research that will benefit Indigenous Australians.

the Judith Whitworth Fellowship for Gender equity in science was launched at JcsMR in April. the inaugural Fellowship was awarded to Dr Julia ellyard in november.

the Fellowship has been established to support a young scientist who has experienced a break in their research career due to maternity or parental leave and will provide up to two years of salary and research support. It is envisaged that this will allow the recipient to re-establish scientific projects, strengthen track record and regain national and international competitiveness when applying for independent external research funding.

nobel Laureate Professor J Robin Warren provided fascinating insights into his work when interviewed by Mr Ken Begg at the 2nd Annual Dinner of the the John curtin Medical Research Foundation in August.

Held at University House, the Dinner was a huge success, and included raffles, silent auctions and entertainment. thanks to generous supporters the John James Foundation and Mr Ron and Mrs Janice Parker, funds were donated at the dinner to finalise the purchase of an intravital microscope to be used in research projects on cancer, malaria prevention and the study of autoimmune diseases at AnU.

Assistant Minister for Health, senator Fiona nash, launched the centre for Personalised Immunology at JcsMR by on Monday 28 April, 2014.

the principal objective of the centre for Personalised Immunology is to understand pathophysiological pathways in patients presenting with immunological disease, in order to make diagnoses more accurate, and treatment more effective.

the centre aims to help people with immune diseases by discovering causative genetic variation, with the goal of delivering treatment strategies targeted to the individual.

the Australian national University and the Act Government announced the appointment of distinguished medical researcher Professor Ross Hannan as the inaugural centenary chair in cancer Research in november 2014.

the centenary chair is a new position, focused on researching new treatments for cancer patients and fostering collaboration between canberra medical specialists and scientists at the John curtin school of Medical Research and across AnU.

the centenary chair is a joint project of AnU and the Act Government, established to celebrate the centenary of canberra, which took place in 2013. the Act Government provided $1.5 million to help fund the position.

In the fight to ‘Kick sarcoma’, the sarah Grace sarcoma Foundation has been tirelessly fundraising in Australia and singapore to support sarcoma research at JcsMR, and currently funds a named PhD scholarship at the school.

Mr Jinsoo Yoon is the first recipient of that scholarship, studying in the Department of Immunology under the supervision of Professor chris Parish and Dr Lucy coupland.

the John James Foundation has established a Prize for excellence in Research in translational Medicine at the AnU college of Medicine, Biology and environment in honour of long term Board member Mr tony Ayers Ac. the Prize is awarded to an early – Mid career Research scientist within cMBe who has made a most significant contribution to translational Research, over the course of their research career.

our thanks go to those who have so generously supported the John curtin Medical Research Foundation at AnU during 2014

2014 was a very successful year for the John curtin Medical Research Foundation, with many goals achieved.

the highlight of the year was our second Annual Dinner, at which nobel Laureate Professor Robin Warren was our special guest. nearly 200 attendees heard Professor discuss the science that led to his and Professor Barry Marshall’s discovery of the Helicobacter pylori as the cause of peptic ulcers.

the 2nd Annual Dinner also saw the Foundation achieve its goal of purchasing a $1.2M intra-vital microscope for the John curtin school of Medical Research, thanks to generous donations on the night from the John James Foundation, and Janice and Ron Parker. the Board is very grateful for all the donations it has received over the past two years culminating in this purchase.

We were also able to produce three high quality newsletters throughout 2014, which highlighted the excellence of medical research at AnU. I would particularly like to thank Ken Begg, Dr Peter Jeffrey and Dr Madeleine nicol for their superb efforts in producing the newsletter, which was very favorably received by the public at large.

Another 2014 highlight for the Foundation was the announcement that Professor Ross Hannan had been appointed as the first centenary chair of cancer Research at the John curtin

school of Medical Research. the Foundation played a very significant role in achieving $1.5M in support from the Act Government to partner with AnU in this appointment.

In February 2014 the national centre for Indigenous Genomics was launched at JcsMR. the canberra Medical society, which has been involved in Indigenous health projects for over a decade, donated $34,000 to support the ncIG and their important work. the cMs, in conjunction with JcMRF will host “sunday Dreaming” on the grounds of Government House in May 2015, in order to raise further funds and increase awareness about the work of the ncIG.

the Foundation has greatly enjoyed engaging with all those donors who have supported our projects, and medical research at AnU throughout 2014.

I would like to thank each of those donors on behalf of the Board for their passion for life changing medical research, and their generosity.
