TWOMBLY PERFORMANCE HORSE SALEJuly 28th , 2012

Cheyenne, WY

We are excited to announce that our next horse sale will be held in Cheyenne, Wyoming during the World Famous Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo on July 28th. The sale will be held on the street in front of the Wyoming State Capital Building. The performance will be held at the new fairground location east of Cheyenne, Wy. The horses will be in Chey-enne a few days prior to sell time. 30 geldings will sell. Hope you can all attend. Book your rooms now. More details coming soon. Twombly Performance Horses began selling horses in 1989. The specialize in pretty col-ored performance geldings. What makes their business unique is that all the geldings are ridden on their ranch by Dan, Alies, John and Tia Twombly-who combined have over 100 years experience riding performance geldings. The family buys, rides and promotes every horse they sell. And to define performance according to Dan means well broke, gentle minded and works off a loose rein. They will offer videos of the horses online before the sale. They will show how well they ride in the pasture and in the arena and also show them team roping. Twomblys always try to have a few so well broke that they can ride bridleless. They will sell roughly 30 geldings at the sale as they feel that is the most the family can ride to show the geldings at their highest potential. Dan & Ann Twombly along with Jeff and Jean Levenstam purchased Zan It, an own son of Hollywood Dun It (250 AQHA performance points, 3 time World Champion, 6 time World Show Qualifier). They are selling Zan It's entire 2012 foal crop at private treaty. They will show the foals online with photos and videos. Zan It is the perfect fit for Twomblys. He throws 80% colored colts which are clean and refined with big hips. They are very smart, easy to train and athletic.

The Original Source of Blue Valentines

In 1998, Randy Dunn, Chip Merritt, Sam Shoultz, and Dick Van Pelt had one thing in common—the legendary Blue Valentine. Wanting to preserve the bloodline and make it available to other horsemen, they created the “Come To The Source” partnership. “We were just four good friends, with similar breeding philosophies, who got together to put on a horse sale.” says Randy. “Fifteen years later, we are still good friends and putting on one of the best sales in the country. A lot of marriages don’t last that long.”

experience and depth of Blue Valentine bloodlines to offer top quality horses. With this in mind, you can expect a top quality sale. As the many loyal customers already know, you will see quality Blue Valentine colts with that trademark color. “You can’t go anywhere and see a group of horses like these all in one place. Because of the depth and diversity of Blue Valentine genetics, we can concentrate on the high percentage of Blue Valentine and blue roan color while producing a quality horse,” says Kathy Merritt. “At one time, there was a chance that the Blue Valentines were just going to quietly slip away. We knew there were people out there who liked these horses. What none of us knew at the time was just how much interest would develop.” This is not just a local sale. Horses are sold to Texas, California, Virginia, Florida, New York, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming, Colorado, New Hampshire, Alabama and more. Some have even gone to France. What makes this sale unique is that all of the horses offered for sale can trace their bloodline to a blue roan stallion named Blue Valentine. King Merritt and Hyde Merritt acquired Blue Valentine and owned him until his death in 1980. Blue Valentine had outstanding linage. His sire was Red Man by the legendary Joe Hancock. He had speed, good bone, a gentle disposition, and cow sense. He also had strong genes and passed on his favorable traits. Blue Valentine earnedhis place as one of the great foundation ranch and performance sires. “It is not easy to stay in the lead in horse production; it takes a lot of work and dedication. We all work hard to maintain the quality of our horses,” Chip says, “and to produce an honest sale. If the customer feels he got a great deal, he will be back again, and bring his friends.” “These things have allowed us to stay in the business as long as we have,” he explains. “Our goal is to have a fun sale, have it go fast, and for it to be an enjoyable experience for everyone.”

2012 AnnuAl Horse And Production sAle reference Guide Page 33

We are having our 60th Annual Horse Sale this year. We are excited about the opportunity to provide horses for everyone in the horse business or wanting to start in the horse business.

We all know that everything runs in cycles and that we are experiencing a down cycle in this business, which makes it the perfect time to upgrade or start a horse program

When talking about seed stock to start a program with, what better time and place to capitalize. We feel that buying seed stock is important and buying from an established and reputable outfit is important. With this being our 60th annual, you can buy with confidence that we stand behind what we raise and be ready when the cycle turns around and everyone wants in.

We are very pleased with your continued interest in our horses, and feel, we have a great set of colts to offer you this year. All colts and yearlings are halter broke and will be led into the ring.

16th Annual

The 16th Annual Van Norman and friends Production Sale will feature weanlings, yearlings, started two-year-olds, broke horses, and broodmares from the reputed Van Norman Ranch of Tuscarora, NV, winner of the 2001 AQHA Best Ranch Remuda Award. In addition to the Van Normans, several other breeders will be represented: Rhoads Ranch and Deadwood Quarter Horses (Linda and Randy Bunch) of Tuscarora, NV; Porath Quarter Horses of Rockland, ID; and Dennis and Mary Journigan of Lamoille, NV; have participated from the beginning based upon their breeding programs which were offshoots of the Van Norman program or for their close association or historical ties to the Van Norman family. In addition to this core group, the 2012 guest consignors will include Cory Shelman of Burns, OR, Matt Mori of Paradise Valley,NV, Rolly and Becky Lisle of Northfork, NV, Nick Dowers of Dyer, NV., and new this year TS Ranch of Battle Mountain, NV.Approximately 100 horses, representing most of the working cowhorse families, will be of-fered for auction. Due to the ongoing restructuring of the Van Norman Ranches, there will be a large offering of horses from that program as they continue the process of reducing the number of horses the ranch runs. This represents a unique opportunity to buy into this historic program.Prospective bidders can view the catalog and videos of each horse on the sale website http://www.vannormansale.com/ beginning in mid-August. The sale will not televised; however, video of the horses and live webcast of the preview and auction can be accessed at www.horseauctions.com. Absentee bidders can either bid on-line or over the phone. Those wishing to bid either on the phone or on-line must register prior to placing a bid to make financial arrangements. This can be done by either going to http://www.horseauctions.com or by telephone at 775-756-6508.At 10:00 a.m. on Friday, September 14, the Van Norman Stockhorse Challenge which is a three-event working cowhorse competition in which the contestants execute a reining pattern, work a single cow in the arena, and finally rope and face the animal will kick off the sale weekend. It is open to all horses with special awards to horses purchased in previous Van Norman sales or consigned to the current sale. The preview of all broke horses consigned to the sale will be held at 8:00 a.m. Saturday, September 15, followed by the auction at 1:00 p.m.Participants in the Van Norman Sale follow the vaquero tradition of taking a horse through several levels of training beginning with the snaffle bit at age two culminating in a finished bridle horse at seven or eight. The two, threes, and four year olds will have been ridden in the snaffle bit while the older horses will be either in the hackamore, two-rein, or bridle. Older horses will have been used on the ranch in all aspects of ranch work. Weanlings and yearlings will have been broke to lead and load. Broodmares will have been vet checked for pregnancy and their status published in the catalog and updated in the sale ring. The philoso-phy and training methods of renowned horsemen Tom Dorrance and Ray Hunt prevail. The third weekend in September generally promises beautiful early fall weather with deep blue skies and Nevada blue mountains to complement the fellowship of lovers of good horses gathered to pick out that special addition to their working ranch remuda, their show string, or to their family’s backyard. We hope to see you in person, but if that isn’t possible, please join us on the internet at http://www.horseauctions.com and/or over the phone lines. When Fred Kist Sr. leased the Morton County Fairgrounds in 1942 to begin a tiny livestock auction, he probably had no idea it would grow to become a sprawling,

modernized business that currently employs some 40 people. The livestock business was located in South Mandan until 1956, when it relocated, moving to "The Strip" on

Memorial Highway in Eastern Mandan. The pavillion was officially opened 50 years ago. Today, Kist Livestock is one of the largest auction facilities in North Dakota.

In 2006, Kist Livestock Auction was awarded "The Granite Award", for being a cornerstone of the Mandan and regional economy since 1942.

Every Spring and Fall the Hermanson-Kist Horse Sales, held at Kist Livestock, attract buyers & sellers from all over the United States, Canada and Mexico. These sales always feature a good selection of broke and well-started horses, stallions, Foundation bred foals, and lots of color!

Last year the Hermanson-Kist Horse Sale celebrated 27 years of bringing together sellers & buyers. Buyers come because the sale has a reputation for having a large number of horses & colts with good Foundation Bloodlines! Sellers choose Hermanson-Kist because the sales are well established with many buyers in attendance, and because Dave Hermanson has

Over 30 years experience selling horses, and superior knowledge that only a lifetime of raising horses can produce! The chances of getting a higher price is better in

We strive to raise well minded, versatile performance horses with excellent dispositions and confirmation to meet the needs of our customers. Our mares have been selected to compliment our stallion and our Driftwood/Sunfrost blood-lines, while trying to maintain the Foundation Quarter Horse tradition. Our stallion Western Retama has excellent bloodlines. He produces a great selection of color on our mares including: greys, buckskins, duns, palominos, bays and even a little Easter surprise, this year, that we still aren't certain about! These foals excel with attention. When they are a day or two old, we start leading them and spending time with them, on other basics as well. These foals are well balanced with large hips, wide chests, beautiful heads and minds that are ready to go work! Maubach Farms Quarter Horses is a relatively new breeding program, but we are extremely pleased with our results and would love the opportunity to show them to you. So if you are looking for your next Performance Prospect or just happen to be in the area, please stop by, as we would love to introduce you to our herd!

Page 52 tHe WorKinG Horse

Do you remember the first sale catalog you saw or came in contact with? If my memory serves me correctly the first sale catalog I saw came in THE AMERICAN QUARTER HORSE JOURNAL. It was in the March 1963 issue. My first “Jour-nal.” It was the sale catalog for the 1963 Ada Quarter Horse Sale at Ada, Oklahoma. I was fascinat-ed to see all those pedigrees in one place and many of those pedigrees had a caption tell-ing me something about the horse. I was hooked and to this day I love getting a new sale catalog and taking a look to see what I can find. I might just learn something. So over the years I have retained a number of sale cata-logs that are special for various reasons. One of those sale catalogs reminds me of the first time I met Orren Mixer. Orren was one of the most prolific artists in the horse industry that began his career after World War II profiling many breeds, but special-izing in the American Quarter Horse in his paintings. Orren is the artist that did the “perfect” American Quarter Horse for the AQHA. He was a very special man. This meeting took place at the Carol Rose Production Sale in October of 1998. I was attending the sale with Dr. Earnest Harper of North Little Rock, Arkansas. Earnest had partnered with Carol and was attending the sale because a foal from the partnership was selling. Earnest and Orren were long time friends.

Orren was Carol’s special quest and through his friendship with Earnest we found ourselves sitting next to the legend-ary artist. Orren had designed the cover and back cover of Carol’s sale catalog. I was very honored to be sitting there and able to visit with a legend.

When I got home I was feeling

pretty important and told my wife Judy that I

had had a very special day. I showed her the sale cata-

log and then I said, "You’ll

never guess who I sat with at the

sale". She looked at me puzzled and I

said, "Orren Mixer". She looked at the sale

catalog front and back then she said, “You didn’t get his

autograph?”

My response was that I wasn’t going to do something like that as

I was there with him and that made me feel like I was a celebrity as well.

I just couldn’t be small enough to ask for an autograph under those circumstances. She thought I was kind of dumb. (She is usually right in things like that and in this case it was probably not one of my better moments.) Well the rest of the story came about in December when Earnest and I were going to the NCHA Futurity and we met at his house in North Little Rock. Before we left, Earnest pulled out my Christmas gift. It was three prints by Orren Mixer with his autograph on each of them. The

best autograph contained a personal note-- “Judy, Next time you come to the sale.” My missed opportunity actually led to our crossing paths with Orren several more times and one of those special times was our afternoon with Orren in his stu-dio. By the way Judy spent the afternoon sitting in Orren’s chair—the one he sat in to do his work. I still have that sale cata-log. It is one of my treasures along with my autographs on the three prints hanging in our home. As I said at the beginning, the sale catalog is an interesting document that has come down through history in many ways. When we get a new sale catalog we search for horses that might interest us through their bloodline. Then we focus on the se-lected individuals based on other factors, like conformation and performance, and then we buy if the horse is what we want and we can afford him or her. That has al-ways been and always will be the purpose of a sale catalog. But as we look back on the use of the sale catalog, we see not only a tool that helps us select a horse but as a historical document that has fed us a lot of

information over the years. When the AQHA was formed it didn’t keep performance records. So the first horses that were registered and shown didn’t have a place in the AQHA files for a show record. So it was still word of mouth about show records. So through early sale catalogs we have a place that documents those show records as well as information about what kind of horse these individuals were. Here is an example in a mare named Billie Silvertone. Billie Silvertone was a good show mare and her show record included the Grand Championship at Fort Worth Stock Show in 1945. She was foaled in 1939 on the ranch of her breeder R. L. Underwood of Wichita Falls, Texas. Underwood will be remembered in the AQHA as a founding member of the association and the third President of the association. He was a prominent breeder of the Copperbottom bred horses. Billie Silvertone was one of his successful mares. She was sired by his outcross stallion Silvertone and out of a Golden Chief mare.

This is Billie Silvertone R. L. Underwood's great "cutting" mare. Photo Courtesy The AQHA Hall of Fame and Museum.

2012 AnnuAl Horse And Production sAle reference Guide Page 53

Continued on page 54...

By the mid 1950’s Underwood was forced to sell many of his horses due to health issues. So in April of 1956 he held his sale and Billie Silvertone was lot number 17. Her 1955 foal was also in the sale. He was Cutter Bill that became

a multiple World Champion and AQHA Hall of Fame member. Over the years I had seen various refer-ences to Billie Silvertone as not only a halter mare but also a performance mare but I have never found concrete evidence leading to a show record. Despite the fact that I still have no official show record

for her performance abilities, her de-scription in the Underwood sale catalog indicates how Mr. Underwood and her trainer Pine Johnson felt about her and her ability as a cutting horse. Here is what Underwood wrote; “This yellow mare was truly one of the great cutting horse mares in the years 1944, 1945 and 1946, before we had a cutting horse association. She was broke to ride and trained by Pine Johnson—one of the best. She would work anything that moved in front of her, chickens, dogs, goats, sheep, or cattle. Pine Johnson says this mare is the best cutting horses he has ever had a saddle on.” We have to point out that Pine John-son’s statement about Billie Silvertone as a cutting mare was made before he went to work for Mr. Waggoner and began to show Poco Bueno. But the statement certainly put her in good company. The caption goes on to tell about her as a broodmare and where some of her foals were at that time.

So as you see it is little tidbits of infor-mation like this that become valuable to us studying the history of the American Quarter Horse. The sale catalog was also very important to the person that didn’t have the AQHA Studbooks because it was a source of pedigree information and this was especially true when the pedigree was not in the AQHA Studbook. This takes us to Royal King and an example of what we are talking about and how a lost pedigree was found. Royal King is one of the most important stallions in the breed today. He is found in many of our great performance horses especially in our modern cutting horse. He was owned by Earl Albin. Royal King is an AQHA Hall of Fame member for his contribution to the breed. The prominence of Royal King in the industry is also noted in that the American Quarter Horse Foundation awarded him his own historical plague in 2011. The plague is located in the town square in Comanche, Texas. Royal King was an NCHA Reserve World Champion Open Cutting Horse that was sired by King P-234 another

AQHA Hall of Fame stallion. We know a lot about the pedigree of King P-234 such as he was sired by Zantanon by Little Joe by Traveler and his dam was Jabalina by Strait Horse by Yellow Jacket. The dam of Royal King was a mare whose registered name was Rocket Lan-ing, She was sired by Dolph, an unregis-tered stallion. The dam of Rocket Laning was Cricket and she was sired by Coldy. For many years it was written that Rock-et Laning carried a significant amount of Yellow Jacket blood. But no concrete evi-dence seemed to appear in the pedigrees and literature we had available to prove that that was true or where Yellow Jacket appeared in her pedigree. Here is how Garford Wilkinson put it in his story “Royal King” that appeared in THE AMERICAN QUARTER HORSE JOURNAL in December 1965, “Royal King was foaled April 13, 1943. His dam was Rocket Laning who carried the blood of Dolph, Gregg Horse, Cricket, Mamie, Coldy, Rose and on both the top and bot-tom sides the blood of Yellow Jacket.”

What makes this interesting is that Earl Albin was a pedigree fanatic. Earl had studied pedigrees and researched many

of the early horses helping to establish a great deal of pedigree information. When late in life the ravages of diabetes limited his activities he spent his time studying pedigrees. Despite his love of the pedigree for some reason there was no public listing of the pedigree of Rocket Laning show-ing exactly how she was related to Yellow Jacket. It seemed to appear that Rocket Laning’s pedigree was going to be limited to us knowing her sire as Dolph and her dam being Cricket by Coldy. Where was the Yellow Jacket blood? Some of the Yellow Jacket blood came to light while doing some research on Royal King and information from Sue Mag-ers, Earl Albin’s daughter. Sue and her husband Randy Magers are carrying on the legacy of the Royal King bloodlines through the descendants of their great mare Lynx Bar Legacy. Sue reported to me in a note that Rocket (Rocket Laning) was sired by Dolph by Cremo. She also noted that Dolph was out of a mare named Mamie. The dam of Rocket was Cricket by Coldy and Cricket

was out of Rose. This is the pedigree for Rocket that appeared in Albin’s 1948 sale catalog and this is where Sue found the information. The appearance of Cremo prompted some research that took me to a booklet called STUD PLAY ON NAMES. This booklet was put together by Victoria Anne Short and is a compilation of alias’ and previous names from a docu-ment found in the Denhardt files that carries the same title. This booklet is a list of stallion names and the alias’ they went by and shows how a lot of the stal-lions we see have more than one name. We find many horses with more than one name and of course that was stopped when the AQHA came on board. This booklet tells us that Cremo was also known as the Gregg Horse and his sire was Yellow Jacket. When you ask Sue why she felt this pedi-gree of Rocket was correct, she is quick to respond that it was her dad’s research and she never remembers a time when he was wrong on a pedigree. She added that if it wasn’t the correct pedigree he wouldn’t have used it. Again we have a tidbit and it has led to a finding of at least one of the Yellow Jacket crosses found in Rocket’s pedigree. (For those of you who study genealogy you will understand that it is the little things that carry you on and lead you to more information.) I was able to find a second source for this pedigree through the National Quarter Horse Breeders Association files at the AQHA Hall of Fame. A review of the pedigree on the registration application of Royal King to the National Quarter Horse Breeders Association states the same pedigree plus it adds Coldy to the mix as a horse that traced to Yellow Jacket.

This pedigree shows Dolph to be sired by Cremo (Gregg Horse) by Yellow Jacket. The dam of Dolph was Mamie by Moss’ King by One Eyed Kingfisher. Cricket was sired by Coldy by Yellow Jacket. Cricket was out of Rose, whose pedigree is unknown. So when we add in the blood of Yellow Jacket in King P-234 we see that Royal King had a pedigree pattern of 4 X 4 X 4 to Yellow Jacket. Yellow Jacket appeared three times in the fourth generation of the pedigree of Royal King. By the way the official computer pedigree for Royal King does not show this pedigree. This is the nature of pedigree research on these old horses. We have to look at all avenues to dig out the correct information on the pedigree and the old sale catalog is a great source for that kind of informa-tion. The sale catalog not only gives us infor-mation on the past for our historical view of the breed but also today is a sophisti-cated tool that gives the most up-to-date information available. I realized how important these old cata-logs were when I had the opportunity to interview Nelson Nye in the mid 1980’s. Nye was a former editor of the WEST-ERN LIVESTOCK JOURNAL and author of many western novels. He was a very prolific writer that lived in Arizona and was closely associated with the rac-ing American Quarter Horse. He did many stories on these wonder-ful horses and he did it the old fashioned way. He did it through interviews and I am sure he did it through sale catalogs when they were available. But during our visit, we got to discuss

how I found my information on the offspring of the horses I was doing my story on. When I told him it came from the AQHA and their computer records, he lamented how easy that was because he had to interview many people just to get all the information and then sort it out to write the true story. He could not believe I had all that at my fingertips. Back in the mid 1980’s I would call the research department at the AQHA tell them what I wanted and they would mail it to me. Yes mail it to me. Just think what he would be thinking today with our modern technology. I just downloaded the sale catalog for the Pitzer Ranch Spring Sale for 2012. Now I am going to save that to my computer or my Udisk and I will have it for all time. This is the way it has gone in our industry and technology has become a part of the sale catalog. We can even download “apps” which are specialized programs for our mobile devices to get the latest informa-tion on a horse we are looking to buy. Kind of a supplement to the sale catalog. So let’s not underestimate the power of the sale catalog and how it has kept up with the times. But at the same time don’t forget its ties to the past and that should make us think—where would we be without those old sale catalogs? Larry Thornton is a pedigree analyst and breeding consultant.
