Section 1.2.1 of the Marian University Faculty Handbook states that in, “the Annual Self-Evaluation the faculty member will provide a narrative and documentation which shows development in each of the key areas (Teaching, Scholarship, and Service) as well as an assessment of the balance maintained among the three areas.” The form provides an opportunity for faculty to describe their activities in the essential areas of teaching, scholarship and professional activity, and service, to reflect on their activities and accomplishments, and to connect these activities to their professional development goals. SCHOLARSHIP AND PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES Scholarship is characterized by active study and involvement in the intellectual and scholarly developments in one’s discipline. Since what is considered appropriate may vary from discipline to discipline, scholarship and creative work are evaluated in terms of their quality and significance to the particular discipline. Document work completed during the period, or on which significant effort was expended. This may include scholarly publications (journal or book), presentations at conferences, patents secured, compositions created, musical performances, artworks created, or other activities.

SERVICE

Service as used in this section, refers to activities exceeding the normal contractual obligations expected of all faculty (such as attendance at academic meetings, faculty senate meetings, faculty in-service, convocation, state-of-the-University, etc.). Service includes activities (such as serving as a department chair) for which faculty receive remuneration that exceed the normal contractual obligations expected of all faculty. Evidence of service is required of all faculty in their annual reviews. For Associate and Full Professors, increased service, including leadership is expected.
