Letter to the Community

On behalf of St. John’s Medical Center, we are pleased to present to you the 2014 Annual Service Report to the Community.

Before we review the highlights of the year in the rest of this report, we want to express our great appreciation for the hospital staff, physicians, and other providers who are on the front line caring for patients literally every hour of every day. Today’s health care presents significant challenges that require the teamwork of our administration, medical staff, and board. However, it’s the compassion, competence, and resolve of our staff and doctors that make us most proud to be associated with St. John’s Medical Center.

We are also grateful for our community’s willingness to engage with St. John’s on many levels. Your feedback about the care you receive and your perspectives about local healthcare are vital to us so we may continually improve. The gift of time offered by our many volunteers is invaluable. And, we are humbled by the ongoing support and generosity of our donors, who help us to provide the best care possible.

We recognize the role of the medical center as leader and partner in improving community health. New and growing relationships with many partners are evidence of how much better we can be together. We are working with Public Health, Teton County Library, area schools, Teton County/Jackson Parks & Recreation, Grand Teton National Park, and University of Utah Health Care on exciting programs such as worksite wellness, Words on Wellness, health events, and telemedicine. In addition, our growing alignment with the Medical Staff means we are working together effectively to ensure St. John’s survival and success in the face of the many challenges in health care confronting small rural hospitals.

We look forward to your continued interest and involvement. Thank you for your support.

Community Health & WellnessTo promote community health and wellness, St. John’s Medical Center and St. John’s Hospital Foundation partner with many local agencies to provide health education and outreach. Helping Residents Obtain Health Insurance

Teton County had the highest number of health insurance enrollees in Wyoming during the first year of the Affordable Care Act Marketplace. St. John’s and the Teton County Library offered education sessions and trained navigators to assist community members in their search for health insurance options.

Working Together to Enhance Quality of CareExciting developments from the St. John’s affiliation with University of Utah Health Care (UUHC) include the introduction of “Physician Connection” for better coordination of patient care between the two health systems.

Physician Connection is a secure, on-line portal that provides St. John’s physicians with access to their patients’ UUHC medical records, including lab, imaging, and test results; hospital admissions and discharge status; consultation notes; and orders placed by UUHC physicians.

St. John’s and UUHC enhance local access to specialty care through UUHC specialists: • stroke care • cancer genetics • burn and wound care • pulmonologists • neurologists • oncologists • perinatologists

A secure online patient portal has been launched to assist with communications and information between providers and patients.

Internal Medicine

St John’s Physician Practices has expanded services in internal medicine. Mike Menolascino, MD, and Christine Turner, MD, who see patients at Wilson Medical, join Jackson-based Dennis Butcher, MD, Ellen Meyers, MD, and Kerry Carr, FNP-C.

General Surgery

• colonoscopy and GI procedures • hernia repair • breast and cancer surgery

9

Family Health & Urgent Care

With 14,000 patient visits, the practice added a provider to meet patient demand. Cecelia Tramburg, FNP-C, is well-versed on the Jackson community, having been on staff at other area clinics in Teton Village and in Driggs, Idaho.

Audiology & Hearing Aids

The Birth Center

Welcoming new babies into the world is one of the distinct pleasures and greatest responsibilities of St. John’s Medical Center and the staff and physicians of the Birth Center. With larger labor and delivery rooms and a location offering spectacular natural light and views of the Elk Refuge, the new Birth Center brings privacy and comfort to a new level.

The multipurpose rooms allow women to labor, deliver, and recover in the same room and include features to make the experience more comfortable, including jetted tubs, color therapy, aromatherapy, and music.

While the new Birth Center is beautiful, it’s the care provided by physicians, midwives, nurses, and other staff that sets it apart.

The center offers:• comprehensive prenatal care classes• breastfeeding support by certified

lactation specialists• support group for new families • low C-section rates• high breastfeeding rates for new

mothers

10

Introducing Our New Facilities

I was waited on hand and foot by the nurses, and they all made me feel at home. The lactation specialists were great. I had my son there in 2008 and the care is still just as wonderful as it was back then, if not better. I always recommend Jackson as the place for women to have their children. —a thankful mom

“Catch Fire, Rise Again” by Jackson Hole artist Amy Ringholz is a recent addition to the St. John’s Hospital Foundation art collection. An anonymous donor gifted the painting to the oncology department to honor the exceptional care offered there.

OncologyThe new Oncology Pavilion provides a beautiful space for patients requiring cancer care and infusion services. Improved privacy and patient comfort are the result of separate treatment bays, more exam rooms, and a dedicated reception area and waiting room.

Changes in systems and increased efficiencies for the doctors and nurses who staff the department allow for a greater focus on quality care.

St. John’s oncology program has become more robust and includes:

• regular visits by oncologist John Ward, MD, from the Huntsman Cancer Institute

• telemedicine with Huntsman Cancer Institute for oncology and cancer genetic counseling

• monthly facilitated support groups• wellness services• social outings• nurse navigator program

Acclaimed photographer David Swift is no stranger to St. John’s joint replacement surgery program. Since the hospital is a longtime client, David has photographed various components of the program on several occasions.

This year David put down the lens and became the patient. “I’m on my feet constantly for work and play,” he said. “The deterioration of my mobility was accompanied by a gradual depression. My knee was seriously cramping my style.”

He and his doctor determined that a knee replacement was in his future. “I couldn’t think of a reason to go anywhere else for the procedure,” David says. He was able to walk the hospital corridors the afternoon following his surgery. David appreciates the help of the homecare department and expertise of his physical therapist and is now pain-free.

Eight weeks after his surgery, David had an epiphany: “I thought I was getting a new knee. Turns out I got a new body.”

I thought I was getting a new knee. Turns out I got a new body.

When St. John’s Medical Center was founded nearly 100 years ago, it took the entire community to build this hospital. The gifts came in all shapes and sizes: land and logs, meals and money. The generosity of the

community carries forward to today: it still takes all of us, through gifts large and small, to maintain and improve the Medical Center.

This past year, thanks to your generosity, the Foundation provided more than $1.5 million to St. John’s Medical Center. These gifts made possible oncology treatment rooms, an outpatient surgery waiting area, nurse education, staff scholarships, rehabilitation equipment, and countless small details that lead to the high quality patient care for which St. John’s Medical Center is known. Throughout this annual report, you will see the myriad ways in which your gifts have impacted the community.

Thank you for partnering with us to make the strategic investments necessary to carry out our mission of advancing the Medical Center and inspiring philanthropy to improve the health of our community.

Sincerely,

John Goettler Phillip CoosaiaPresident Board Chair

In Service to Women

The women of Soroptimist of Jackson Hole are serious about their mission. Soroptimist means “best for women” and the local club—

which has been around for 48 years—takes that mission to heart. In pursuit of that mission, they have set themselves apart in their ability to tackle issues facing women, build community among women, raise funds for women, and demonstrate leadership as women.

Though the club has long supported St. John’s, in 2012 they decided to give the bulk of the proceeds from their event, Bras for A Cause, to the Women’s Health Care Fund at St. John’s Hospital Foundation. The Women’s Health Care Fund provided support to 94 local women in need of medical care in 2014.

“We wanted to keep as much of our donation local as possible,” says Karen Brennan, former chair of Soroptimist. “We want to make sure that if women need care, they can access it.”

A Private Waiting Area

Annie “Lou” and John Furrer are quiet leaders. They are thoughtful, observant, and, above all, purposeful.

Take, for example, their recent gift to create a waiting area for Outpatient Surgery. The Furrers had a clear vision of a private waiting area for family and consultation space for doctors. They knew what a difference this would make for hospital patients and visitors.

“We had to be persistent,” John said. “We wanted to make sure it happened.”

They were moved by the need for privacy for family members and patients alike. As long-time supporters of St. John’s Medical Center and medical excellence in general, they understood the community benefit of a new OPS waiting area.

“We’re thrilled with the room,” said Lou. “We love to give back to the community in a way that makes a difference.”

Katherine’s Legacy

Every year, four checks arrive at St. John’s Hospital Foundation

accompanied by a beautiful handwritten card.

Richard Pieper sends all four in honor of his late wife, Katherine, with each delivered on a meaningful day. The first arrives in honor of Katherine’s birthday, the second honors the couple’s wedding anniversary, the third

memorializes her passing, and the final gift comes at Christmas.

Through Richard’s generosity, stemming from his love for his wife and his appreciation for having a top-notch hospital in a small community, the Katherine Pieper Memorial Fund supports the purchase of medical equipment and other hospital needs.

“In this remote area, St. John’s Medical Center is a beacon. The capability of this hospital—for people from all over the world to have

access to quality health care—is unique. You can depend on it for

medical care and expertise,” said Richard.
