A Note from Cantor Avery

Shabbat HaNefesh

Shabbat HaNefesh means Shabbat of the Soul. Approximately once a month on

the third Friday night of the month, we will have special musical Shabbat services

called Shabbat HaNefesh. Our first service like this was October 19th and our next

one is November 16th (see below). We will be joined at services on November 16th

with the beautiful voices of Ruach, our Temple Shalom Youth Choir and Kol Halevi’im,

our Temple Shalom Teen Choir. We have our biggest group of young singers yet!

Our Shabbat evening services are an important part of the week at Temple Shalom. Music remains an

essential element of our spiritually uplifting worship. Sometimes we have services with piano, sometimes

we sing a capella, sometimes we sing with guitar, sometimes we have choir or soloists, and sometimes

we have a small band with drums, piano, bass, and flute! All these ways we worship, with instruments,

extra singers, and without, give our worship special texture and added meaning to our prayers.

Sometimes these special musical Shabbat services will have a theme. Our Shabbat HaNefesh service

on March 15th will be our yearly, phenomenal Jazz Music Shabbat Service. I’m particularly excited about

the theme of our November 16th Shabbat service. As I mentioned above, our Youth and Teen Choirs will

be participating in the service. The theme for that Shabbat will be Women Composers of Jewish Music.

If you were at Shabbat services on September 21st, you heard my sermon about women composers

of Jewish liturgical music. My revelation was regarding the music most Jewish congregations use for

services, especially for the High Holidays, being primarily composed by men. There are many reasons for

this which I will be discussing more in-depth at the service in November. While on some level I always

knew about the imbalance, I believe I hadn’t fully awoken to the deeper truths and subtle (and in most

cases unintentional) sexism residing in this disparity. I made a personal commitment to myself and to our

community to help balance out our world of Jewish liturgical music. This year, almost all of the new music

I brought in for the High Holidays was composed by women.

As your cantor, I believe it is essential to have good music that expresses our liturgy and that gives

voice to both the female and male composers of our sacred liturgy. Both voices have worth, value, and

importance. Both give voice to the innermost prayers of our people. In this “brand new day” that our

rabbis spoke about on the High Holidays, I feel I can do no less than to make ample space for both.

I am so looking forward to these joyous musical Shabbat services that we will have this year and I

hope to see each and every one of you there! If you have questions or would like to help out in some

way, please don’t hesitate to reach out!

As you may recall, during Rosh Hashanah morning services, I asked every member of the

congregation to pledge “2-hours” to get involved on a Temple Shalom project or

committee. The response was terrific…with nearly 250 people completing cards. It’s this

spirit of lending-a-hand and getting involved that distinguishes our congregation. It also

makes it a “tough” task every month to profile only a handful of outstanding volunteers

and Board members. See below for three impressive people, along with a salute to

employee Kathy Nall.

Stephen Gold Before the High Holy Days, the Temple Board divides the membership roster and places

“Happy New Year” calls to every member. Stephen Gold has been the Board member

behind this project for the last few years. Thank you Stephen! He and wife Mandy, and

daughters Jacqueline (17) and Eva (15), moved to Dallas in 2013 when Stephen

relocated here with AT&T. The Golds immediately jumped in…co-chairing the 50th

Anniversary Religious School Honor Roll, see the plaque on the wall as you enter the

eastern doors. Two interesting facts about Stephen – he loves his mom’s prune-filled

Hamentaschen and he played college football!

Jeff Kort is a Board officer, religious school teacher, docent to interfaith visitors, and co-chair of a

committee…while also working as a talented CFP (certified financial planner) – along with

being a husband to Kim, and dad to Sydney (17) and Dylan (20). The Korts joined Shalom

twelve years ago, and moved to Dallas more than twenty years ago when Jeff was

relocated with Sprint. Jeff and Kim grew up in Kansas City where they were both very

active in the Jewish community. That engagement shown brightly when they co-chaired

Temple Shalom’s 50th Anniversary Celebration in 2015. Something you didn’t know…Jeff

started his high school’s TV station and hosted a monthly TV program.

Shelli Taub If you’ve visited the Temple’s administrative office, you probably saw Shelli Taub, but

thought she was an employee. Nope…Shelli is the remarkable volunteer who has made it

her “job” to help-out in the office every Wednesday and Friday – for the last twenty years!

That’s dedication. Shelli and husband Les (approaching their 60th wedding anniversary)

have been members of Shalom since moving to Dallas 46 years ago, and raised sons

Larry (a long time member), and Steve, who lives in Chicago. Before starting her office

routine, Shelli helped found Traditions gift shop, organize the Havurah program, and led

the early years of Camp Hooray. Next time you see Shelli, please say “thank you”… and

ask her about how much time she spends playing Words with Friends.

Meet Kathy Nall, our Accounting Manager. Kathy joined the Temple Shalom staff in April

2005. An Air Force brat, she has lived in Okinawa, Japan, Hawaii, and Austin where she

met and married her husband Brack, also an Air Force brat. They have two sons, Brack

Taylor who is an Air Force fighter pilot, and Daniel who is a computer programmer in Ft.

Worth. She has three grandchildren and one on the way. Kathy enjoys the people she

works with.

Temple Shalom’s Women’s Interfaith Group always welcomes new

members and doubled its membership this past year.

We meet four times a year and rotate between the Islamic Center in Irving,

Northwood Church in Keller, and Temple Shalom. Most times we meet at a

member’s home for

lunch and a program. Rabbi Paley traveled

to Dubai with Pastor Bob Roberts and

Imam Sulemon.

Our last meeting was held in August. It

was fun seeing old friends and enjoying

lunch together. We learned about the

Church’s involvement in helping people

from North Vietnam. We sewed and stuffed

Eco-Friendly & Reusable Gift Wrap Ideas for the Holidays

Did you know that, in the U.S. alone, we use four million tons of gift wrap and decorations each year for

the holidays - and this just gets added to landfills. This is a 25% increase over normal waste volume

between Thanksgiving and New Years.

What can you do in your house to make a difference?

Can we gift experiences over material things? They may be remembered longer, too.

If you are ordering online, try to combine shipments.

How you wrap is important:

Use comics or art work

Do you have fabric leftovers that can be used as bows or wrapping?

Use a gift as a wrap like a scarf

There are countless clever earth-friendly ways you can make an impact large or small. Share some with

us! For more ideas … https://wellnessmama.com/62543/eco-friendly-gift-wrap/

Shomrei Adamah Committee thanks you for considering the environment this holiday season!

Name Tags at Shabbat Services “Where Everybody Knows Your Name”

Visitors, members and their guests are asked to wear a paper name tag at Shabbat

services. We feel that we should all get to know each other and warmly greet our guests.

Nothing does this better than seeing a person’s name and addressing them with it.

We have paper name tags available in the foyer, and for members who wish to have permanent

magnetic name tags, you may order one at the sign-in table for a nominal charge of $5 each. These are

appropriate for all Temple Shalom events.
