Farm Fresh grocery store recently remodeled and now displays hand

painted Colonial Williamsburg scenes on their walls. Just in front of the cash

registers at checkout, is this scene with a pair of American Cream Drafts (Ben

and Jesse) pulling the Randolph carriage. The Randolph, built ca. 1840, was

the first carriage purchased by Colonial Williamsburg, back in 1929. In 1949,

it was remodeled and restored to look like an 18th Century carriage. It is stillin service today, giving rides around Colonial Williamsburg. The originalphoto by Bill Gaertner is now a postcard that the painter used when he trans-

formed the store wall. Standing in front of one of the murals, is Karen Smith,

Supervisor of Barn Operations at Colonial Williamsburg.

Spring is promising to arrive and I am lookingforward to it. Everyone will begin to getbusywith their assorted chores. Please don't forgetto turn in stallion reports and other paperworkto Nanry Lively. It is very important to keep

our association's records up to date and the

info on the horses correct. Dues will come due

soon and the forms for that will appear in the

next newsletter. Nanry Phillips needs info on

fairs, horse shows, and other events. She willalways accept photos of new foals. Details on

this year's meeting can be found in this issue

and the hotel is now taking reservations. Be

sure to tell them you are with the ACDHAwhen you book.

Ambassador Takes the Gake!

By Steve Erlitz

I{srssWscurPhoto Caption: Steve Erlitz, Senior Systems Engineer, Technical Infrastructure, Office of Information Technology, and longtimecommunity volunteer and CFC supporter with "Solo" at Day's End Farm Horse Rescue http://www.defhr.org in Lisbon, Maryland.

Says Steve, "Solo is one of the three'fosters' my wife, Mary Ann (now re-tired from FMCSA) and I support at

Day's End Farm Horse Rescue. Unlikemost rescues, we do not take drop-offs ofhorses. We only accept horses from ani-mal control agencies located in Mary-land, northern Virginia, southern Penn-sylvania and if needed, West Virginia.Currently, there are more than 70 abused

and abandon horses that Days End Res-

cue is rehabbing with the goal of adopt-ing out.

NAIS Updote 2010

The real world was not kind to the USDA's plansfor a National Animal ldentification System(M!9. It is now January 2010 and NAIS is stillpretty much dead in the water. According to theUSDA's timeline all three components of NAISwere supposed to be fully implemented by Jan.2009. The reality is:

--- Premises ID has not been implemented.

--- AnimalTagging has not been implemented.

--- AnimalTracking has not been implemented.

Over 90o/o of farmers and consumers were vehe-mently against NAIS both in independent pollsand at the USDA's own listening sessions in2009.

Coxcnrss HAs DEFUNDED NAIS.

Proponents of NAIS, who benefit by selling tagsand market monopolies through Big Ag, con-tinue to promote NAIS quietly looking for backdoors through which they might slip the nooseover the necks of free farmers and consumers.

Be vigilant. Keep supporting small-scale local ag-riculture because that is where food security lies.

In addition to fostering three horses, Iserve on the Development Committee, which is our 'Outreach' goup. I alsohave certification as a Barn Inspector, which qualifies me to go out prior to anadoption to inspect the property and sta-ble. I return several times over a twoyear period to follow-up before final titleis turned over."A side note about Solo: He is a 7-year-old Thoroughbred that was used as a'Barrel Racer.' He was seized last yearwith knees worse than mine. They aretotally blown. He still thinks he's young(most horses live to be 30) and at 16.2hands, we let him run - even though heis in pain. He can never be ridden again, but he can be a 'companion' hone.Horses are herd animals; they need to bein groups, you cannot own just one. Twois almost mandatory, three is best unless,of course, you ,ue boarding the animal.Often the reason Days End Rescue be-comes involved is because people don'tunderstand the full responsibility of own-ing a horse and get in 'over their heads.'If you know anyone with kids that arebegging for a horse for Christmas or abirthday or because their friends haveone, advise them that it is a life-longcommitment. Even if the horse isboarded, it's a $400-600 per month com-mitment for the lifetime of the animal."'When you contribute to organizationslike ours through CFC, think of Solo andthe impact your generous donation canmake to make his life better. Thankyou."

Days End Farm Horse Rescue, Inc. is a non-profit,volunteer based humane organization whose

mission is to ensure quality care and treatment of horsesthrough intervention, education, and outreach.
