WHATZ GOIN’ ON? Over the coming weeks, retail stores across the valley are set to lose a large percentage of their workers. WHY? Glad ya asked! Remember all those rude teenagers who ran the stores all summer long? Well, in the next couple of weeks they will be gone. History…disappeared! They are going back to schools and

most local stores will be empty of sales associates and cashiers – especially in the mornings and for most of the day.

BIG STORE OR LITTLE STORE? Big stores need more people, they are going to hire more people but, everyone knows this and they are going to apply at them. Little stores are going to hire a smaller number of people, they are more difficult to find (they don’t run $100K ads) and hiring is more based upon you going in person and introducing yourself. The downside to big stores is an impersonal, hard to navigate online application, a vast ocean of applicants, no one to help you if you have a question and assembly line interviews. Little stores require that you come to them, introduce yourself and usually fill out an application. The downside at the small store is that everything is based upon how well you introduce yourself and if they take a liking to you. Friendly, bubbly and people with a lot of social skills do well in a little store setting while, people who are more information-based (remember a lot of facts) do well at the big stores – where there is much to learn and remember do to all the inventory that they have.

Consider this…for every Super Target there are nine little stores….94% of all Arizona businesses employ ten people or less. So if you want to have a lot of choice and are a bubbly person, go little and if you are not so bubbly but have good memory skills…go big!

SALARIES At entry level, there is not a lot of difference in salaries between big and little stores. The going rate is from minimum wage to about$8.50/9.00 per hour. Most companies have insurance in name only (high deductibles $5-10K) so don’t make a choice based upon insurance. If you don’t have $5-10K to pay your deductible…then you have no insurance…you still need to get better or die…

I’LL WAIT TILL THEY HIRE FOR THE HOLIDAYS! GOOD IDEA OR NOT? Not a good idea. Companies are filling FT/PT positions right now because of back-to-school sales and that their work force is leaving. If you are hired now and if you are a real dependable, hard-working employee…why would they fire you at the end of Back-to-School only to rehire you for the holidays…THEY WOULDN’T! If you are still working at the end of the holidays…you are not going anywhere. So, the best time to secure a position that will become permanent in retail is right now… “But, I already applied several weeks…months ago!” The best thing to do is re-apply because your old application (if it still there) is buried at the bottom of all the newer applications and they are pulling from the top. They pull from the top because they know that these people are available now and that they are looking for work NOW…Not six months ago…

Feedback is that it is better to go into the closest store between 2-4PM to talk to someone about actual openings…unless you want to spend 50 minutes to find out there are no openings…Don’t figure that a phone is the lazy way out…as they MAY take the easy way out too and just answer “NO.”

COURTESY CLERK AT KROGER - ACCEPTED OFFER Interview Details – Applied in store and was called to interview the next day. Just asked very basic background questions. I don’t think there were any personality questions at all. Overall very easy process which is expected for a very low skilled job. CASHIER - ACCEPTED OFFER Interview Details – The interview was pretty formal and easy. The Associate Manager was the one that did the interviewing and she just asked the basic retail questions. It seems that if you get an interview you'll more than likely get the job as long as you don't say anything that

would jeopardize that. The manager actually spent more time talking about the company than actually asking questions. She also liked the fact that I was in college since many of the employees there were attending a college or university. They also do an oral drug test with you right away in the office after the interview. CASHIER - ACCEPTED OFFER Interview Details – I applied online. I was contacted 2 weeks later for an interview. I arrived early, and had to wait. The interviewer finally came to interview me. I was immediately asked to see my identification and SS card. She copied it, and then proceeded to give me papers describing the duties of cashier and courtesy clerk. I was asked questions regarding education, past experience, scheduling availability, customer service, and why did I want to work for Kroger. She went over the pay scale, training, scheduling, dress code, lunch/breaks, and insurance. Afterwards, I was given an oral drug test and back ground check. Exactly one week later, I was contacted to come in and do paperwork. CASHIER - ACCEPTED OFFER Interview Details –Initially received a phone call to schedule an interview several days after my online application. I arrived a bit early so I had to wait for about ten minutes upstairs; I guess they weren't expecting me to be prompt. When my interviewer arrived, it was fairly straightforward and quick from then on. We went into the office and I was asked simple questions about myself, my work experience, and why I wanted to work for Kroger. At that point, the conversation shifted to the job description, work environment, expectations of me, and the drug test I'd have to take. I then was given time to ask questions, and then taken to the HR person to take my drug test. I was called a few days later when the results were in to schedule training and orientation. Easy process and the front end manager were very nice throughout it all. Interview Question –There weren't really any difficult or unexpected questions. They were fairly simple and straightforward. ===================================================================

CASHIER - ACCEPTED OFFER Interview Details –Applied online. Standard online application included basic info and a Q&A assessment test. Do not "Strongly Agree" or "Strongly Disagree" with anything and you should pass it just fine. HR called and asked me to come in for an interview with the manager. Wear something nice - Men: Collared button-down shirt (tucked in), slacks/khakis (no shorts) and belt (preferably one that matches shoe color), loafers or not-worn-out sneakers. No flip-flops or sandals.

Women: Nice shirt with slacks or skirt. A dress is ok too, but make sure it is covered (if sleeveless) and an appropriate length (right above knee or longer). Shoes can be dress sandal to high heels. No flip-flops. THE MANAGER MADE IT A POINT TO TELL ME I LOOK POLISHED AND PRESENTABLE. HE HIRED ME AFTER A 5 MINUTE INTERVIEW. Interview Question –Standard interview questions, including:

• Why do you want to work here? • Why are you a good fit for this company? • What are your goals in the next few years?
