Another SucceSSfulSanta’s Toy Drive

We do not want another monthtogobywithout thankingallwhohelped lastDecember! TheannualChildren’sChristmasPartyandSanta’sToyDrivewasheldonthe10th.SantaClausmadeanappearancetoaskourboysandgirlswhattheywantedforChristmas,andtopickupthemanygiftsdonatedbyourfamiliestolessfortunatechildren.Theweatherwasjustperfectforthehayridesaroundthe neighborhood to look at thewonderful Christmas lights. Backintheclubhouse,childrenhadtheir

photostakenwithSanta,andenjoyedcookiesandhotchocolate,coloring,and crafts. The adults also enjoyedthecookiesandbeverages,aswellasgoodcompany! Abigthankyouthentothemanyresidentswhosogenerouslydonatedto this most worthy cause. Also,many thanks to the tireless teamwhoarrangedandsetuptheevent,broughtfoodandbeverageforalltoenjoy, organized thehay ride, tookphotographsofthekidswithSanta,

and Guests to Eldridge Gate ResidentsareremindedthatthetwoaccessgatesonTannerRoad(GingerPondsandHeatherRun)areforusebyresidentsonly.Useoftheaccessgatesbyvisitorshasbeenproblematic.Ignoranceofthepolicyandawillfuldesireto“shortcut”theEldridgegatearesomeobviousreasonsforvisitorstousethebackgates.Whenquestioned,contractorshavealsoindicatedthatresidentsdirectedthemtothebackgates and were told they would be “clicked in”.CompoundingtheproblemisthatGPSmappingsystemsindicatethattheGingerPondsgateisthemainentrancetotheneighborhood(theEldridgegatedoesn’tshowatallonsome). Therearenoeasysolutionstotheproblem.TheaccessissuesaretopicsofconstantdiscussionatthemonthlyBoardmeetings.PermanentlyclosingtheHeatherRungateandaddingaccesscontrolattheGingerPondswouldbeeffectivemeasures;however,there are practical problems with these solutions.TheBoard feels that installinganothergatehouseorcamerasattheGingerPondsentrancewouldbeprohibitivelyexpensiveatthispointintime.Addingtotheexpenseisthefactthatthegatewouldhavetobemovedbacktoavoidback-upsonTannerRoad. OurpatrolhasbeeninstructedtospendaportionofitstimemonitoringtheTannerRoadgatesfornon-resident entry. Any non-resident observedattempting to use these gates is informed of thepolicyandescortedaroundtotheEldridgegatebythepatrol.YoucanalsoassisttheeffortbyinformingyourcontractorsandgueststhattheyshouldusethemaingateoffofEldridgeRoadandloginwiththeattendant.

Criteriaforchoosingyardofthemonthwinnerare1)Color,2)Balance,3)Maintenance,and4)Aesthetics. There will be two yards of the month and twohonorablementionschoseneachmonthfromApriltoNovember,onefortheneighborhoodseastofTurkeyCreekbridgeandone forneighborhoodswestof thebridge. Eachhouseholdthatwinswillreceivea$25.00giftcertificate from Cornelius Nursery for their “GoodNeighbor Program”, along with a Cornelius NurseryyardsignandaLakesonEldridgeyardsignidentifyingthe winners. The “Honorable Mention” winners willreceiveaLakesonEldridgeyardsign. Theyardofthemonthcommitteewillselecttheyards,awardthegiftcertificatestothehomeowners,andplanttheyardsignsonthefirstdayofeachmonth.Thesignswillberemovedonthelastdayofthemonth. Thistimeoftheyear,MotherNatureprovidesourLOEswanswithsomecommonsense.Itismating,nesting,andegg-layingseasonandtheyfeeltheneedtoprotecttheirterritoryagainstpredatorsincludinghumans,dogs,andwaterfowl.Mostoftheswansinourneighborhoodarenotoldenoughtomatebutsomewillgothroughthemotionsofevenbuildinganest.Thepairsofswansthatareoldenoughtoproduceyoung(cygnets)arenormallygentleandcanbehandfedwhileposingnothreat.However,ourcobs(males)willbecomeaggressiveandterritorialintryingtoprotecthispen(female)andnest.Thisisusuallytemporaryuntilmatingseasonisover.Ifyouarewalkingpastalakeandaswanswimstoyoursideandfollowsyou,BEWARE! Ifyouseeaswanwithhisneckbackandfeathersupsuchastheoneintheaccompanyingpicture,pleasestayaway,donotattempttofeedhim,andwalkontheothersideofthestreetasheisinhisATTACKposition.Please warn your nannies and sitters not to stroll babies around the swans.
