Ansys, Inc. is an engineering simulation software(computer-aided engineering, or CAE) developer head-quartered south of Pittsburgh in the Southpointe busi-ness park in Cecil Township, Pennsylvania, United States.One of its most significant products is Ansys CFD, a pro-prietary computational fluid dynamics (CFD) program.

1.1 Ansys CFD

Ansys CFD allows engineers to test systems by simulat-ing fluid flows in a virtual environment — for example,the fluid dynamics of ship hulls; gas turbine engines (in-cluding the compressors, combustion chamber, turbinesand afterburners); aircraft aerodynamics; pumps, fans,HVAC systems, mixing vessels, hydrocyclones, vacuumcleaners, etc.

2 History

The company was founded in 1970. by Dr. John A.Swanson as Swanson Analysis Systems, Inc (SASI). Itsprimary purpose was to develop and market finite ele-ment analysis software for structural physics that couldsimulate static (stationary), dynamic (moving) and ther-mal (heat transfer) problems. SASI developed its busi-ness in parallel with the growth in computer technologyand engineering needs. The company grew by 10 percentto 20 percent each year, and in 1994 it was sold to TAAs-sociates. The new owners took SASI’s leading software,called ANSYS®, as their flagship product and designatedANSYS, Inc. as the new company name.

3 Acquisitions

Ansys has acquired a number of companies since 2000,including ICEM CFD Engineering, CADOE S.A., ofLyon, France, a company specializing in parametricanalysis, and with numerous French clients, includ-ing Michelin, Renault and Airbus,[5] and CFX (2003);Century Dynamics, Harvard Thermal, and Fluent Inc.(2006); Ansoft Corporation (2008); Apache Design So-lutions (2011); Esterel Technologies (2012); EVEN andReaction Design (2013);[6] and Spaceclaim Corporation(2014).[7]

Ansys was listed on the NASDAQ stock exchange in1996. In 2011, Investor’s Business Daily gave the firma top score on its SmartSelect composite ratings.[8] Theorganization claims to reinvest 15 percent of its rev-enues each year into research to continually refine thesoftware.[9]
