increased quality), they have become an integral part o the engineer-

ing design and analysis environment o companies in the widest range

o industries.

General-Purpose CFD Solvers

ANSYS uid dynamics technology provides access to both the well-

known ANSYS FLUENT and ANSYS CFX products. Also available sepa-

rately, these are the main general-purpose uid simulation products

oered by ANSYS. These two solvers were developed independently

over decades and have a number o things in common, but they alsohave some signifcant dierences. Both are control volume-based or

high accuracy and rely heavily on a pressure-based solution technique

or broad applicability. The products dier mainly in the way they inte

grate uid ow equations and in their equation solution strategies.

The ANSYS CFX solver uses fnite elements (cell vertex numerics),

similar to those used in structural analysis, to discretize the domain. In

contrast, the ANSYS FLUENT solver uses fnite volumes (cell-centered

numerics). Ultimately, though, both approaches orm control volume

equations that ensure exact conservation o ow quantities, a vital

property or accurate CFD simulations. ANSYS CFX ocuses on one

approach to solve the governing equations o motion (coupled

algebraic multigrid), while ANSYS FLUENT oers several solutionapproaches (density-based as well as segregated and coupled pressure-

based methods). Both solvers contain a wealth o physical modeling

capabilities to help ensure that any uid dynamics simulation has all

o the modeling fdelity required.

Furthermore, ANSYS® CFD-FloTM sot-

ware addresses the uid ow

analysis needs o designers who

work on the ront lines o their com-

pany’s product development process.

The tool limits the physics accessible

by the user to the models most com-

monly used by design engineers. Itis compatible with other applicable

ANSYS Workbench add-ins. The re-

duced complexity and cost o ANSYS

CFD-Flo sotware make it a good

choice or design departments.

ANSYS CFD sotware is highly scal-

able. Time to solution, and thereore

product development times, can be

shortened with ANSYS® HPC, the

high-perormance computing option.

This allows perorming large model

calculations on parallel computing

clusters. Linear scalability has been

shown on systems with more than

1,000 processors.

The ANSYS uid simulation solvers

represent more than 1,000 person-

years o research and develop-

ment. This eort translates into

the key benefts o uid simulation

sotware rom ANSYS: experience,

trust, depth and breadth. The

CFD core solvers rom ANSYS are

trusted, used and relied upon by

companies worldwide.

Specialty Fluid Analysis Tools

Flexibility and generality are impor-

tant, but sometimes not required

or certain specifc applications. In

addition to providing general-purpose uid simulation, ANSYS makes

uid simulation even more accessible and ocused with its specialty uid

analysis tools. These products are oten called vertical applications be-

cause o the way they integrate all the steps or the analysis o a specifc

type o system into one package. The technologies oer industry-spe-

cifc unctions as well as employ the language o the industry in which

they are used.

Turbomachinery is one o the world’s single-most successul uid

dynamics vertical applications — due to the similarity o the geometry

and physics across a broad range o rotating machinery sectors. Turbo-

system technology rom ANSYS includes custom geometry and mesh-

ing tools as well as special modes within the general-purpose uid sim-

ulation tools. ANSYS® Icepak® sotware is a amily o products ocused

on electronics design and packaging. To improve the perormance and

durability o electronic boards and other components during the

design o optimized cooling systems, the product calculates the ow

feld and temperatures in electronics and computer systems.

ANSYS® POLYFLOW® sotware ocuses on the needs o the materials

industry, such as polymer processing, mold-flling, thermoorming andglass production. It can model the ow o uids with very complex

behavior, such as viscoelastic uids. ANSYS POLYFLOW oers unique

eatures, such as the ability to perorm reverse calculations to deter-

mine the required die shapes in extrusion. It also can calculate the fnal

wall thickness in blow-molding processes.

FLUENT® or CATIA® V5 sotware brings uid ow and heat transer

analysis into the CATIA V5 product liecycle management environment.

The uid ow physics available are most commonly used by design

engineers. It is ully compatible with the ANSYS FLUENT product.

Finally, end users can create their own vertical applications within the

general-purpose uid simulation products. ANSYS CFX oers user-

confgurable setup wizards and expression language. ANSYS FLUENT

provides user-defned unctions. Combined with the scripting tools

available in the other ANSYS Workbench based applications, these can

be used to create custom vertical applications. It is not uncommon or

an analysis department to create such vertical applications or deploy-

ment within a design department. The main beneft o this approach is

to ensure repeatable simulation process control and, hence, quality

control or any uid dynamics process.

The Benefts o Fluid Simulation rom ANSYS

ANSYS uid ow analysis technology allows or an in-depth analy-

sis o the uid mechanics in many types o products and processes.

Not only does it reduce the need or expensive prototypes, it

provides comprehensive data that is not easily obtainable rom

experimental tests. Fluid simulation can be used to complement

physical testing. Some designers use it to analyze new systemsbeore deciding which validation tests, and how many, need to be

perormed. When troubleshooting, problems are solved aster and

more reliably because uid dynamics analysis highlights the root

cause, not just the eect. When optimizing new equipment de-

signs, many what-i scenarios can be analyzed in a short time. This

can result in improved perormance, reliability and product consis-

tency. ANSYS continues to innovate and integrate so customers can

replace more o their traditional capital-intensive design processes

with a Simulation Driven Product Development method.

The ANSYS AdvantageWith the unequalled depth and unparalleled breadth o engineer-ing simulation solutions, companies are transorming their leading-edge design concepts into innovative products rom ANSYS and

processes that work. Today, almost all o the top 100 industrialcompanies on the “FORTUNE Global 500” invest in engineeringsimulation as a key strategy to win in a globally competitive envi-ronment. They choose ANSYS as their simulation partner, deployingthe world’s most comprehensive multiphysics solutions to solve theircomplex engineering challenges. The engineered scalability o solu-tions rom ANSYS delivers the exibility customers need, within anarchitecture that is adaptable to the processes and design systems otheir choice. No wonder the world’s most successul companies turnto ANSYS — with a track record o 40 years as the industry leader —or the best in engineering simulation.
