Simulating Process Conditions

• Working from CAD geometries represents the final state of a given product– Manufacturing is a process

where components are assembled at differing stress states• Thermal stresses• Deformed shapes

– Residual strain from manufacturing process may play a role in stress/strains of finished product

Ansys Element Birth & Death• Ansys offers element birth and

death technology for process simulations– EKILL: The elements are set to an

extremely soft stiffness, essentially deactivated in the analysis but deforms with the other elements

– EALIVE: The elements original stiffness is restored and the elements have a zero stress state in the deformed state

4NOTE: Be sure to also deactivate surface loads

and kill contacts on bodies that are killed!
