Page 6: Antarctica Christmas 2008

Our incredible expedition staff that will take us exploring

through the Antarctic

Page 7: Antarctica Christmas 2008

On the third day, we arrive

at our first stop

Page 8: Antarctica Christmas 2008

Six Zodiacs are lowered into the

icy waters

Page 9: Antarctica Christmas 2008

I was proud to be riding on the safest transport between the ship and each shore destination, boats manufactured by our company, Zodiac

Sally with a quarter million

penguins

Page 11: Antarctica Christmas 2008

This “rookery” covers the entire island

Page 12: Antarctica Christmas 2008

From the seashore all the way up the hill mating pairs are nesting

Page 13: Antarctica Christmas 2008

Feeding their young

Page 14: Antarctica Christmas 2008
Page 15: Antarctica Christmas 2008

Skipping up the rocky hillside

Page 16: Antarctica Christmas 2008

At locations where snow is present,

penguins develop a roadway between their

nests and the sea

Page 17: Antarctica Christmas 2008
Page 18: Antarctica Christmas 2008

These roadways are complex and allow for two way traffic during the busiest times.

Page 19: Antarctica Christmas 2008
Page 20: Antarctica Christmas 2008

To feed, these penguins have to make their way to the sea shore and then develop the courage to swim in these dangerous waters filled with hungry seals

Page 21: Antarctica Christmas 2008
Page 22: Antarctica Christmas 2008

Courage to enter the water is best developed in groups

Page 23: Antarctica Christmas 2008
Page 24: Antarctica Christmas 2008
Page 25: Antarctica Christmas 2008

We saw many species of seals, mostly molting and

sleeping

Page 26: Antarctica Christmas 2008
Page 27: Antarctica Christmas 2008

They seem so docile while resting, but these are fierce hunters that prey on the penguins

We celebrated Christmas with special carvings by the

talented crewmembers and a delicious feast

Page 35: Antarctica Christmas 2008

Notice the wonderful lighting patterns in the ice

Page 36: Antarctica Christmas 2008

This iceberg rolled over right in front of our eyes

Page 37: Antarctica Christmas 2008

There were spectacular formations

Page 38: Antarctica Christmas 2008

It is simply impossible to describe the majesty that surrounded us in every direction. Everywhere one looks is magnificence on a scale none of us had ever seen before.

Page 39: Antarctica Christmas 2008

We were simply in awe

and spent hours sitting in

the middle of all this

splendor

Page 40: Antarctica Christmas 2008
Page 41: Antarctica Christmas 2008
Page 42: Antarctica Christmas 2008
Page 43: Antarctica Christmas 2008

The weather was magnificent. We were all fortunate souls as it is not always this “perfect”

Page 44: Antarctica Christmas 2008

We saw millions of ice formations in the sea

Page 45: Antarctica Christmas 2008

Our ship had to carefully maneuver its way through ice fields

Page 46: Antarctica Christmas 2008
Page 47: Antarctica Christmas 2008
Page 48: Antarctica Christmas 2008
Page 49: Antarctica Christmas 2008

One day, we had a barbecue lunch on the aft deck

survive the bitter winter

Page 53: Antarctica Christmas 2008
Page 54: Antarctica Christmas 2008

There were many opportunities to climb to great heights like this

volcanic island

Page 55: Antarctica Christmas 2008

And this snow and ice covered island

Page 56: Antarctica Christmas 2008
Page 57: Antarctica Christmas 2008

It was windy at the top

Page 58: Antarctica Christmas 2008

Conditions were ideal for sliding down these slippery slopes

Our Group Photo

Page 61: Antarctica Christmas 2008

We were blessed to have an extraordinary group from around the

world including Russia and Singapore

Oh yes, where there are kids and water……………

Page 66: Antarctica Christmas 2008
Page 67: Antarctica Christmas 2008

The water temperature is 33 degrees Fahrenheit

Page 68: Antarctica Christmas 2008

And in some places, thermal springs to make bathing more relaxing

Page 69: Antarctica Christmas 2008

Beautiful birds were in abundance

The woman to the right (with hat), was a wonderful 65 year old guest from Singapore

Page 73: Antarctica Christmas 2008

Tragically, on New Year’s Day she was found unconscious in her cabin as we docked back in Ushuaia. An ambulance took her to the hospital in a coma. She died the following evening.
