• Data from the 2007 National Survey of Children’s Health show that the percentage of children ages 10–17 who are overweight ... remained stable, while the national prevalence of obesity (BMI in the ninety-fifth percentile and higher) grew significantly, from 14.8 percent in 2003 to 16.4 percent in 2007.

• An estimated 10.58 million children, or nearly one in three children ages 10–17, were overweight or obese in 2007.

• The direct costs of childhood obesity include annual prescription drug, emergency room, and outpatient costs of $14.1 billion, plus inpatient costs of $237.6 million"; the annual cost to treat obesity-related illness in adults runs an estimated $147 billion.

Alliance for a Healthier GenerationAlliance for a Healthier GenerationPrevention, assessment and treatment of the childhood obesity epidemic • A joint initiative facilitating innovations to significantly reduce

childhood obesity in the United States by 2015 and to empower kids nationwide to make healthy lifestyle choices.

• During the three year pilot study, Anthem Blue Cross of CA and Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield of VA will offer extra-contractual healthcare benefits for the prevention and treatment of childhood obesity.

• Eligible children will have access to up to four physician visits and up to four visits with a registered dietitian per year. These healthcare professionals will work with children and their families on how to establish and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

• The Anthem Get Active. Get Fit. School Challenge is a free fitness program for Virginia elementary school students.

• The School Challenge is a competition among students to exercise a minimum of 20 minutes for 40 out of 55 days

• The purpose of the program is to educate and motivate elementary school students to exercise regularly and lead healthy, active lifestyles to mitigate childhood obesity.

• Anthem partners with CareFirst BlueCross Blue Shield to cover schools in Northern Virginia that are outside of Anthem’s service area.

• In addition to VA, Anthem is implementing this program in nine other states.

1. Partner with the Virginia Department of Education to promote and communicate the “Get Active. Get Fit.” School Challenge, hosted by Radio Disney throughout Virginia.

2. Starting in August, the Department of Education and Radio Disney facilitate the distribution of information via e-mail to the elementary schools to encourage schools to participate.

3. Get Active. Get Fit. school registration begins August 22nd through September 30th, 2011.

4. A website, www.getactivegetfit.com, is designed for schools to register themselves as well as house all the Get Active. Get Fit. School Challenge materials.

5. To encourage school registration and participation, the first five schools to sign up and also complete the School Challenge, will win a Gym and Outdoor Deluxe Activity Kit for their school.

6. Registration reminders are emailed to all the elementary schools through September 30th.

7. Radio Disney also promotes registration on-air on WDZY AM 1290 Radio Disney Richmond.

8. School registration closes September 30th.

9. From October 3rd-November 25th, schools compete against each other for the chance to win a Radio Disney Dance Party.

10. Schools have the option to email the tracking materials to teachers and parents or print the materials, such as the student and classroom tracking chart, to track physical activity right there in the classroom.

11. Students must exercise a minimum of 20 minutes per day for a designated period of 40 out of 55 days and submit their activity chart to their teacher.

12. Teachers record the student’s physical activity on their classroom tracking chart.

13. Teachers then submit total classroom activity to the Get Active Get Fit leader (principal/physical education teacher) for the school.

14. The Get Active. Get Fit. leader sends total school participation chart in to Radio Disney by December 9th.

15. Once all information is received by Radio Disney, the top 30 schools with the largest percentage of students participating in the challenge win a Radio Disney Dance Party.

16. Radio Disney announces top 30 schools via a press release on December 16th.

17. During the holiday season, Radio Disney airs congratulatory announcements for all schools who participated in the challenge and recognizes winning schools.

18. Radio Disney Reward Parties will be scheduled in early 2011.

19. At each Radio Disney Dance Party, students will participate in games and contests and prizes will be given.

• Did you know in 2010 there were 1190 elementary public schools in Virginia with 558,395 elementary school students that were eligible to register for the first annual Anthem Get Active. Get Fit. School Challenge?

• 52% of all Virginia School Divisions signed up to participate in the school challenge in 2010.

• 346 or 29% of all elementary schools registered.

• 158,698 elementary school children (28%) had the opportunity to participate in the school challenge.

• First Lady Maureen McDonnell announced the official day at Maude Trevvett Elementary School in Henrico County.

• Virginia will now have a day dedicated to emphasize the importance of being healthy and physically active.
