Graduate Program: Competition Announcements (MA level)

I. Canada Graduate Scholarships—Master's (CGSM)

The Fall 2014 CGSM application (2015-2016 competition) is available on the Tri-Agency portal (http://www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca/students-etudiants/pg-cs/cgsm-bescm_eng.asp).

The deadline across Canada for applications is 8pm Eastern Time, 1 December, 2014. After this time, the research portal will close, and there will be NO opportunity to re-open the application. This is the deadline for all application materials, including reference letters. It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure that their references are submitted on time.

For more details, please check: https://www.grad.ubc.ca/awards/sshrc-graduate-scholarships http://www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca/Students-Etudiants/PG-CS/CGSM-BESCM_eng.asp

Common Questions and Answers: *Q - Do I have to upload all of my undergraduate transcripts?*

A - Yes, all post-secondary transcripts must be included, even if no degree was obtained or sought at a particular university (e.g. transfer or exchange credits).

*Q - Can I upload a web transcript?*

A - NO. All uploaded transcripts must be official (originally issued by the registrar). *Q - What if I do not have a first-class average as determined by my current/previous institution(s) in each of my last two years of full-time study?*

A – Department of Anthropology may consider forwarding your application to the university-level competition as an exceptional case, but this award opportunity is highly competitive, and they must be able to put forward a strong justification for why you should be considered despite not meeting these criteria.

II. Master's Affiliated Fellowship

Master's Affiliated Fellowships application materials and instructions are available on the www.grad.ubc.ca website: https://www.grad.ubc.ca/awards/affiliated-fellowships

Submit your printed, completed and signed, application materials (with Criteria Based) to the Anth Graduate Office (ANSO 2124) by December 1, 2014, Monday, before 4pm

This matches the Canada-wide Tri-Agency deadline for Canada Graduate Scholarships—Master's (CGSM) applicants to submit to the CGSM portal. CGSM and direct Master's Affiliated applicants are all considered for Affiliated funding, and the common deadline for applications ensures equity of application preparation time for all students.

Anthropology Summer Field School (Anth 409/Soci 495) The City as Fieldsite: Experiential Learning and Student Research in the Urban Ethnographic Field School By Negar Hooshmand, TA, Community Liaison, and Field School Alumnus The Urban Ethnographic Field School (UEFS, formerly IVEFS), a hands-on ethnography course co-

taught by the Department of Anthropology and Sociology, completed its 5th iteration last June.

This year the Field School was taught by Dr. Thomas Kemple and Heather Holroyd from the

Department of Sociology and Ana Vivaldi from the Department of Anthropology. Class seminars

were held Monday through Thursday at the UBC Learning Exchange at 612 Main Street, where

the Downtown Eastside meets Chinatown meets the latest wave of gentrification. The seminars

consisted of the discussion of two key book on the theory and practice of ethnographic fieldwork

along with numerous chapters and articles related to the empirical and methodological

underpinnings of ethnography; the presentation and discussion of ethnographic films; three

interactive workshops on ethnographic research and writing where students worked with and

analyzed their data; a field trip to Insite (Vancouver’s safe injection site); and a guest speaker

discussing the relationship between ethnographic fieldwork and the development of harm

reduction strategies. In addition to coursework, the cohort of 28 students completed at least 6-8

hours per week of community service learning in placements at Neighbourhood Houses and

community organizations across Vancouver, producing high-impact research through

collaborative projects. Students had the opportunity to disseminate their research findings in

group presentations to our community partners at a public event held at the UBC Learning

Exchange on the evening of June 19th, the last day of the Field School.

Individual student research papers examined how the UN-mandated ‘Right to Food’ text is

manifested in practice in Vancouver’s downtown eastside (DTES); how social space is created and

evolves at a community organization and the impact of funding structures on core programs;

how institutional structures shape the everyday struggles of individuals living precariously in the

DTES; how adaptability and freedom of movement in an organization for youth can facilitates

their safety and wellbeing; and how bureaucratic systems of Canadian government organizations

subsume the identities, life stories and experiences of refugees through the use of institutional

categories, among many other topics.

Student collaborative projects included the planning and organization of World Refugee Day;

gathering data through surveys and focus groups and producing a report about the experience of

Chinese Elders accessing the food line-ups in the DTES; the creation of an educational video

about the diverse impacts of Adult Education Programs coordinated through the Learning

Exchange; helping with the organization of the Car Free Festival for Leave Out Violence BC

(LOVE); assisting Neighbourhood Houses with the CAPC (Community Action Program for

Children) conference; creating a Family Resource Pamphlet for the West End Family in Action

Committee; producing a promotional video for Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House that

depicts their wide-range of programs and activities; and many more.

The teaching team would like to congratulate the students for their outstanding work,

enthusiasm, and commitment, and to express their gratitude to the 14 community organizations

that hosted students during these intense six weeks (including seven Neighbourhood Houses,

Ray-Cam Community Center, Settlement Orientation Services, Leave Out Violence BC, First

United Church, Salvation Army, and Union Gospel Mission). We would also like to acknowledge

the ongoing support of the Departments of Anthropology and Sociology, the UBC Center for

Community Engaged Learning and the UBC Learning Exchange, without whom the Field School

would not have been possible.
