ANTIBIOTICS AND ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE

4 year PhD student position in biomedical engineering at the University of Tartu, Institute of Technology

We are looking for enthusiastic and talented future PhD students who want to

conduct their doctoral studies in biomedical engineering at the Institute of

Technology, University of Tartu. Professor Tanel Tenson’s work group

investigates the mechanisms of antibiotic action and antibiotic resistance at

three integrated levels: biochemical mechanisms of action, bacterial cell biology

and bacterial population biology.

The aim is to provide tools for combating the spread of

antibiotic resistance and development of new antibiotics.

The research will be performed in recently upgraded facilities

including animal house, proteomics and DNA sequencing

facilities, microscopy and flow cytometry units etc. We have

many tight international collaborations, involving student

exchange programs, with Umea University in Sweden, University

of Munich in Germany and University of Illinois in Chicago, USA.

PhD students have the possibility to join projects in several integrated domains of research:

I. Studies on the inhibitors of protein synthesis at biochemical level &

development of new protein synthesis inhibitors.

II. Phenotyping heterogeneity of bacteria & following bacteria at the

single-cell level in a mouse infection model.

III. Molecular mechanisms of phenotypic heterogeneity and bacterial

antibiotic tolerance.

IV. Epidemiology of antibiotic resistance, including the transfer routes

between human and animal pathogens and the environment.

Application requirements: Candidates should have a master’s degree or

corresponding level of education in molecular biology, microbiology, biochemistry, medicine, pharmacy or other related

fields.

Candidates should contact Marta Putrinš ([email protected]) before 31th

of January 2015; provide the CV and a short

motivation letter. Early application is strongly encouraged.
