MARCH 17, 2013 — FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT 3
Briefs from Father McMahon
In the Gospel today, the only one without sin who could have rightfully condemned the woman caught in adultery was Jesus himself. Yet instead of casting stones and bringing about death, he forgives the woman and renews her in the life of faith. A new chance at life, in which we live justly and do good is worth more to Jesus than the violent end of any life. With Jesus, death will not get the last word. This story points us forward to the great mystery of our redemption. How wonderful that we have the great Sacraments of Penance and Eucharist to renew us and revive us. What areas in your life are most in need of renewal? As I write this column for the Fifth Sunday of Lent, we look to Rome, and are all awaiting the Tuesday beginning of the conclave of Cardinals to select a new Pope. Let us all remember to pray for the Church at this very critical and decisive time. May the Holy Spirit who never abandons us intercede on our behalf. May the new pontiff be a good and faithful shepherd and a zealous teacher. May he be a missionary who carries the message of the Gospels to all people of the world. May he have joy in the service he will give to Christ and to the Church and be always strengthened by the abiding peace of Christ. Come, Holy Spirit and kindle in us the fire of your Love!!! Next Sunday March 24th on Palm Sunday afternoon the Women of the parish will be having a special Lenten afternoon retreat entitled “Palms to Passion” in Father Frawley Hall from 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm. Mary Leonard and Jeanine Kellman who guided the Sunday women’s retreat earlier this year will lead this afternoon of prayer, song and Lenten scripture. What a perfect way to open your minds and hearts to the sacred mysteries commemorated in this “Holiest of Weeks”. Please plan on attending! Last week’s Men’s Lenten retreat was very reflective and I want to thank ALL the men who participated. I hope it was enriching and deepens your experience of Lent and Holy Week this year. Thanks again to Mary Leonard for her participation and help, keen insights and creative ideas. I am sure we will be doing something like this again in the future. Tuesday March 19th is the feast of St. Joseph and ranks as a Solemnity overriding the usual Lenten weekday. St. Joseph is a key figure in the story of our salvation and deserves some attention. Like Mary, Joseph is obedient to the angel. In God’s wisdom, righteous Joseph was the one best suited to raise and care for the Son of God. Guided by the angel to a greater sense of mission, Joseph accepts God’s call and embraces his family and future, despite the uncommon circumstances. What better time than now to invoke his help as the Protector of the Church as we await the selection of a new pope? St. Joseph reminds us to listen for God’s calling in our lives. God calls us each in ways particular to our gifts and abilities. May the righteousness of Saint Joseph inspire us to act with compassion and faith. Please consult the reconciliation schedules and the schedule of Holy Week services. Have a blessed Lent!

ATTENTION WOMEN OF THE PARISH!!! JOIN JEANINE KELLMAN AND MARY LEONARD FOR AN AFTERNOON—SUNDAY, MARCH 24TH FROM 2:00PM UNTIL 3:30PM IN THE PARISH HALL (FATHER FRAWLEY HALL) - “WALKING IN HOLI-NESS” A TIME FOR PRAYER, SCRIPTURE, RE-FLECTION, AND SONG. JUST COME AND BE WITH US! NO NEED FOR RESERVATIONS—ALL ARE WELCOME! BRING A FRIEND! WHAT’S COMING UP?? Sunday –March 17th is our parish 5th grade retreat from 9am until 11:15am in the parish hall. Our retreat theme is the Season of Lent. Families are encouraged to attend the 11:30am Mass together after the retreat concludes. Any questions, please call the RE Office (847) 395-0246. ATTENTION “SCRAPPERS”!!!! OUR NEXT SCRAP-BOOKING EVENT IS SATURDAY, APRIL 6TH FROM 9AM UNTIL 9PM IN OUR SCHOOL GYM. Registration forms are due back to us by April 3rd. Come and join us! If you need a form, email [email protected] and we will send you one or call the RE office (847 395-0246). OPERATION RICE BOWL CONTINUES. . .in this sea-son of Lent, we reflect more consciously on the three prongs of sacrificial offerings—prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. One way to channel your efforts of almsgiving is by partici-pating in Operation Rice Bowl which is an outreach of Catholic Relief Services. If you still need a rice bowl (and it is definitely not too late), there are still plenty in the church entryways. Monies are due to be turned in on the week-end of April 6th/7th. CEREMONY OF LIGHT PRAYER SERVICE is Sun-day, April 7th at 1:00pm in church for all of our families with First Communicants. What is this about? We re-member the symbols of our baptism as we prepare to receive Jesus in the eucharist for the first time and every time after that! We remembered being “called by name” at the Masses when our communicants inscribed their name in the remembrance book. Now we remember and celebrate being given “the light of Christ” at baptism as we draw closer to our parish First Communion celebra-tions on April 27th and on May 4th. Please continue to keep our parish children and their parents in your prayers.
