PRESCRIPTIONS FOR THE CREATION OF ENTREPRENEURIAL ECOSYSTEM

WHY IT IS IMPERATIVE TO TEACH ENTREPRENEURSHIP
• Our education system is responsible for preparing young people to build successful lives.
• They should be ready for the wide range of possibilities ahead of them, including working for others, starting their own ventures, and contributing to their communities.
• All of these options require a depth of knowledge as well as creative problem solving skills, leadership abilities, experience working on effective teams, and adaptability in an ever-changing environment.
• It’s no coincidence that these are the same capabilities that employers say they want in college graduates.
• Entrepreneurship can be taught using similar scaffolding of skills, building upon our natural ability to imagine

We can confidently assert that these skills can be taught and mastered
![Page 14: Antoine Harfouche, Ph.D. Associate Professor of Forest ... · Antoine Harfouche, Ph.D. Associate Professor of Forest Biotechnology Brain Gain Program, Ministry of Research, DIBAF,](https://reader031.vdocuments.net/reader031/viewer/2022020104/5b186a497f8b9a3c258bc129/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
• By some estimates, no more than 20% of Ph.D. life scientists landtenure-track faculty jobs within 6 years of earning their terminaldegrees.
• Yet, most graduate programs continue to groom graduate students andpostdocs for faculty jobs.
• Meanwhile, the market for industrial R&D jobs is declining
• The result is an employment market where companies can afford to bechoosy -- and companies have mostly stopped choosing scientistsstraight out of grad school or a postdoc.
• “Companies are no longer willing to hire Ph.D.s who don’t bringadditional skill sets to the table”
• “They tend to hire candidates who they think will add value to thecompany in addition to research skills.”

NEW VENTURE CREATION PROCESS IN BIOTECH INDUSTRY
Big problem big opportunity
‘Good science’ultimately wins
Mehta (2004) Paths to entrepreneurship in life sciences. Nat Biotechnol 26:1331-1333
Company’s IP must be defensible and other patent cannot block the path to commercialization
There must be a clear business model/strategy for generating a significant profit.
Developed product must be viable
The company should target a large and or a rapidly growing market
Management should have the skills to implement the business plan
