Preface

The constant pressure towards the realization of environmentally friendly “green”vehicles is dramatically changing vehicle concepts and architectures. Examples arethe growing importance of lightweight materials, the downsizing of internal com-bustion engines, and the introduction of more advanced after-treatment and com-bustion strategies including the use of alternative fuels and control strategies like“idle stop.” We are witnessing continuous evolutions in automotive transmissiontechnology characterized by a steadily increasing number of gear ratios combinedwith reduction of friction losses and dual clutch technology. And of course there isthe “revolution” of alternative propulsion systems including pure electric(BEV) applications, gasoline or diesel-based hybrids (HEV), and plug-in hybrids(PHEV), each of them featuring many possible architectures and introducing newcomponents like electric motors, power electronics modules, batteries, regenerativebraking technology, integrated starter generator technology and additional gearsets.

This new scenario poses overwhelming challenges to the Noise, Vibration,Harshness (NVH) engineers, who are faced with systems of exponentially growingcomplexity exhibiting new multidisciplinary features with huge impact on NVHperformances. Still, apart from being price-wise competitive, these new cars mustalso be appealing and meet the customers’ taste and expectations with respect tocomfort, fun to drive, and brand sound signature. There is consequently a growingdemand for more advanced numerical prediction tools which can further support theNVH engineers during the concept and development phases of new vehicle designprojects. Along with these powerful numerical tools, experimental analysis anddiagnostics remain of paramount importance for a successful vehicle optimization.

The topics within the field of vehicle NVH are so numerous and diverse that it ispractically impossible to give a complete survey within the framework of this book.In the next chapters a few selected topics will consequently be presented, which,although far from exhaustive, give a flavor of the diversity and complexity of theproblems and solutions which characterize the field of vehicle NVH.

This book is structured into seven chapters, each of them authored by NVHexperts from automotive industry and academia. These seven chapters are com-posed to give profound insights into many current vehicle development topics in thefield of NVH. They focus on aeroacoustics, acoustics of geared systems, noisecharacterization and reduction of downsized engines, noise of electrified power-trains, lightweight exhaust systems and a substructuring method allowing toaccount for the dynamic interaction between the car body structure, the poroelastictrim material, and the interior cavity.

The topics addressed in the book also reflect the predominant trends in vehicledevelopment towards reducing the number of hardware prototypes and“front-loading” by means of numerical simulation and enhanced physical compo-nent testing.

The majority of chapter contributions for this book are based on scientific paperspresented at the 8th International Styrian Noise, Vibration, Harshness Congress(ISNVH 2014) in Graz, Austria and have been extended and refined for this bookrecently. The ISNVH congress itself is organized by VIRTUAL VEHICLEResearch Center in cooperation with SAE International and supported by MagnaSteyr and AVL List. The next ISNVH congress will be held from June 22 to 24,2016 in Graz.

All paper contributions for the ISNVH congress and many more technical papersin the field of automotive NVH are published with SAE International and areavailable online from SAE International.

About the Organization Editing this Book

VIRTUAL VEHICLE is an internationally operating research center that developstechnologies for affordable, safe and environmentally-friendly vehicles for road andrail. With currently 200 employees, the center provides advanced know-how in acomprehensive range of technologies in vehicle development. The research activ-ities cover specific single topics as well as complete vehicle systems. Since itsfoundation in 2002, VIRTUAL VEHICLE has established itself as a bridgebetween industry and science and as a well-respected research partner all overEurope and beyond.

VIRTUAL VEHICLE mainly focuses on developing new technologies, meth-ods, and tools for the design and optimization of vehicles (automotive and rail). Thevast majority of the R&D activities include a holistic system view, which helpsavoiding very specific, isolated, and narrowly targeted developments that arewidespread in today’s vehicle research landscape. By considering rising complexrequirements and their interactions with ever-increasing demands,VIRTUAL VEHICLE wants to guarantee for future-oriented solutions. Therefore,one main goal of the research center is providing in-depth know-how in single CAEdisciplines and integrating this to a multi-domain design and optimization.

The NVH & Friction department of VIRTUAL VEHICLE deals with the fieldsof noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH), and aims to determine and reduce thefriction loss in the vehicle. Owing to increasing system complexity, the researchdepartment seeks to handle the growing demands for drive systems with reducedfuel consumption, emissions, and weights, all while maintaining (or evenimproving) passenger comfort.

The major research topics of the NVH & Friction department are NVH materialand technology, vehicle noise reduction, friction loss and vibration reduction, aswell as flow acoustics—both by means of numerical simulation and testing andmeasurement. In combination with the other aspects of the full vehicle, these issuesform an essential keystone in the development of future vehicle concepts.

About the Editors

Anton Fuchs received the Dipl. Eng. degree in Telematics from Graz University ofTechnology in 2001 and Ph.D. degree in Technical Science in 2006 from GrazUniversity of Technology. From 2002 to 2008, he was at the Institute of ElectricalMeasurement and Signal Processing, Graz University of Technology. Since 2008,Anton Fuchs has been associated with the VIRTUAL VEHICLE Research Centerin Graz, Austria. He was Head of Thermo and Fluid Dynamics Department andcoordinated the center development. In 2009, he received the venia docendi for“Process Instrumentation and Sensor Technology” from Graz University ofTechnology and became Associate Professor and Distinguished Lecturer. From2012, he is Head of research department “NVH and Friction” atVIRTUAL VEHICLE Research Center. His main research interests include auto-motive sensing technologies. Anton Fuchs is author and coauthor of more than 100scientific papers and patents. email: [email protected]

Eugenius Nijman received his M.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering from TechnicalUniversity of Eindhoven in The Netherlands in 1987. In the same year he joined“Low Noise Design Department” of TNO in Delft. From 1995, Eugenius Nijmanwas at Centro Ricerche Fiat (CRF), the research center of the FIAT AutomobilesGroup in Orbassano (Torino), Italy. In 1998, he became Head of the Engine NVHdepartment at CRF and held this position till 2009. During that time he wasresponsible and especially involved in engine NVH optimization, NVH targetsetting and deployment, intake and exhaust noise, and impact noise phenomena. In2009, he started his own consultancy company “Nijman Acoustics & Vibrations,”that is based in Costigliole d’Asti (Italy). He also joined VIRTUAL VEHICLEResearch Center in Graz (Austria) in 2011 and took over the position of theScientific Head of the NVH department.

Hans-Herwig Priebsch received a Ph.D. degree from Graz University ofTechnology, Austria, in 1980. His research activities have been concerned withtribology and vibro-acoustics of power units. From 1981 to 1999, he worked forAVL List GmbH, Graz, Austria, where he was Manager in the business area ofAdvanced Simulation Technologies. Together with his team he developed thesoftware AVL Excite aiming to simulate the vibro-acoustic behavior of engine andpowertrain by means of elastic multi-body dynamics and nonlinear contact models.He is holding a Habilitation Postdoctoral qualification and has been giving lectureson machine dynamics and vehicle acoustics at Graz University of Technology,since 1994.

In 1999, he joined the Acoustic Competence Center, ACC Graz, where he hasbeen responsible for all R&D work. Hans Priebsch has initiated and organized theInternational Styrian Noise, Vibration, Harshness Congress and has served asChairman and Head of Scientific Programme Committee for this event. In 2008,ACC has been integrated into VIRTUAL VEHICLE Research Center as department“NVH and Friction.” Hans Priebsch was the Scientific Head of this department untilhe retired in 2012. Contributors

Kwin Abram was introduced to the field of acoustics in 1989 while working as astudent on gas turbine engines at Allison Engine Company. He now holds 20patents related to the NVH field. He obtained a Master’s degree in MechanicalEngineering from Purdue University in 1994 where he conducted diesel enginediagnostics at Herrick Laboratory and then worked for Cummins Inc. till 2001conducting acoustics research. Kwin worked for 11 years on exhaust acousticsresearch for Faurecia Emissions Control Technologies and has recently returned toCummins Inc. as an NVH Technical Advisor for diesel engines. email: [email protected]

Christopher Albert studied physics and received his M.Sc. degree from GrazUniversity of Technology in 2012. From 2011 to 2014, he did research on methodsof acoustical measurements at VIRTUAL VEHICLE. He is now pursuing his Ph.D.in Theoretical Plasma Physics at Graz University of Technology. email:[email protected]

Dennis Bönnen studied vehicle engineering and received his Diploma degree fromthe University of Applied Sciences Cologne in 2003. He received his Ph.D. byconducting research on the investigation of vibrational behavior of brake discs from

Loughborough University in 2008. From 2007 he has worked in various NVHrelated positions at Faurecia Emissions Control Technologies. Currently, as MétierManager, he is responsible for the methods and tools development within thepredevelopment. email: [email protected]

Stephan Brandl studied technical mathematics and received his M.Sc. degreefrom Graz University of Technology in 2004. He joined Acoustic CompetenceCenter in 2004 and received his Ph.D. in the field of acoustic optimization by meansof statistical energy analysis from Graz University of Technology in 2007. In 2008he joined AVL and is now Product Manager for vehicle and powertrain NVH.email: [email protected]

Alexandre Carbonelli graduated with Master’s degree in Material Sciences fromINSA de Lyon. He obtained his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from ÉcoleCentrale de Lyon and the Tribology and System Dynamics Laboratory (LTDS) withhis research on vibro-acoustic phenomena of geared systems. This study has beenperformed in collaboration with Vibratec and Renault Trucks. He works now forVibratec as a Research Engineer and is involved in vibro-acoustic simulations andresearch projects. email: [email protected]

Rik W. De Doncker received his Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from theKatholieke Universiteit Leuven, Leuven, Belgium, in 1986. In 1987, he wasappointed as a Visiting Associate Professor at the University of Wisconsin,Madison. After a short stay as an Adjunct Researcher with InteruniversityMicroelectronics Centre, Leuven, he joined, in 1989, the Corporate Research andDevelopment Center, General Electric Company, Schenectady, NY. In 1994, hejoined Silicon Power Corporation, a former division of General Electric Inc., as theVice President of Technology. In 1996, he became a Professor at RWTH AachenUniversity, Aachen, Germany, where he currently leads the Institute for PowerElectronics and Electrical Drives. Since 2006, he has been the Director of the E.ONEnergy Research Center, RWTH Aachen University. email: [email protected]

Christoph Fankhauser studied mechanical engineering and received his M.Sc.degree from the Graz University of Technology in 1994. He joined AVL in 1994,where he performed engine structural simulations and software coding for thethermodynamic gas exchange software BOOST. In 1999 he moved to the NVHdepartment of MAGNA STEYR. After NVH advanced development and a groupleader position in the comfort development, he transferred to the advanced devel-opment within MAGNA STEYR and performed several internal and externalresearch projects, and among them several projects with the VIRTUAL VEHICLE.Since 2011, he has been the Head of MAGNA STEYR’s NVH department. email:[email protected]

Matthias Frank studied electrical engineering and audio engineering at Universityof Technology and University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz. Afterreceiving his Diploma in 2009, he joined the Institute of Electronic Music and
