THEORIESALON #8

Contemporary research on ma-teriality in the contemporary world investigates collections of given, unimportant matter. Some idiosyncratic operations enable different architectures formed through the sole as-semblage of insignificant material. Such assemblages propose different structures in different conditions; they might make sense as site-spe-cific strategies. Remodeling and reordering insignificant

elements build propositions or form utterances by orchestrat-ing fragments.

with Aristide Antonas, AthensHost: Andreas Rumpfhuber

Aristide Antonas is a Greek architect and writer, associate professor at the Univer-sity of Thessaly, postgraduate seminar director at the National Technical Uni-versity of Athens, and the founder of the Antonas Office. He co-founded the plural academic persona, "Gregorios Pharma-kis", and the curating group, Built-Event.

Theoriesalon is a loose series of architectural and design theory sem

inars that aim to

challenge the presently expanding concepts of design and architec-ture. The sem

inars will

be reviewing critical

contemporary design

practices. Each of the positions that w

ill be presented in the Theoriesalon series addresses interven-tions in the m

aterial w

orld that strive to change our reality in an egalitarian w

ay.

Within this perspective,

it is important to

discuss theory in terms

of everyday design practices, including the issue of w

hether design can be seen as a political practice. Theoriesalon is an initiative by Expanded D

esign, an office
