Lukprakob deep heat, Thai style
In Thailand, the round cotton bundles containing herbal mixtures were once the secret tools of ancient healers, and up until recently, could be obtained only from traditional healers or from the Thai massage school at Bangkok s Wat Po, or Temple of the reclining Budha. The original of Thai herbal heat compress were used to soothe the aching muscles of war weary soldiers during the Thai Burmese battles of the Ayutthaya period over 200 years ago. Such compresses were also popular in neighboring Burma,Cambodia and Laos, though the formulae differ from region to region , depending on the local plants and herbs. With the recent back to nature trend among stressed and healthconscious urbanites, these herbal compress are now packaged and sold commercially in many stores. Some Thai women use these store-bought compress on their abdomens after giving birth, to help ease the tired, bloated feeling that comes after childbirth. Called Prakob in Thai. The herbal compress has been incorporated into modern spa treatments and is offered at a number of Thai spas.

The Federal Government has announced two pledges to revamp rail transport in eastern Australia in less than 24 hours.The Government says if it is re-elected it will fund a study into a high-speed rail link along Australias east coast as well as commit to building an inland rail link between Brisbane and Melbourne. Transport Minister Anthony Albanese would announce details of the plans in Melbourne today. He says the Government will commit $20 million to study the feasibility of a fast-speed rai l l ink between Sydney and Newcast le. I t would commence later this year and be completed within 18 months, he said. Along with the high-speed rail link study, Labor has also promised voters it will build an inland rail line between Brisbane and Melbourne via the New South Wales central west, including Parkes. The rail line would stretch 1,700 kilometres through three states.The idea of an inland line has been around for more than 100 years. Mr Albanese says the link would take trucks off the highways and relieve pressure on Sydneys north-south line. A Government-commissioned report found the project would become economically viable by 2030. It would cost $4.7 billion over eight years but pre-construction activities would not start until after the next election.

Sources in Phnom Penh confirmed, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen have three opportunities to meet and discuss ways to boost bilateral relations. Both Thai and Cambodian sources, who did not want to be identified, pointed out that after the meeting, the two leaders are scheduled to have another get together. The sources said both sides were upbeat that relations would improve following the return of their ambassadors recently. There have been several high-level visits by senior officials in the two capitals.

F-16 Pitch Black 2010 -
Exercise Pitch Black 10 is a three week multi-national air combat exercise, to be conducted in Northern Australia. PB10 will be the largest RAAF Field Training Exercise for 2010 and will involve a combination of day and night flying from RAAF bases at Darwin and Tindal. The exercise will involve participants from the Australian Army and elements of the Singapore, New Zealand and Thailand air forces that will participate in the tasking, planning and execution of Offensive Counter Air and Offensive Air Support operations in a coalition environment.

South Korean Foreign Minister Yu Myung-Hwan offered to resign after being accused of nepotism over the controversial hiring of his daughter, a spokesman for the ministry said. Minister Yu offered to step down, taking responsibility for causing controversy over the issue of hiring his daughter, spokesman Kim Young-Sun told journalists. Yu on Friday apologised after his ministry hired his daughter for a well-paid job, sparking allegations of nepotism at a time of high unemployment. President Lee Myung-Bak was expected to accept his resignation, Yonhap news agency said. The president is unlikely to reject the resignation offer, a senior official of the presidential Blue House was quoted as saying. Yu was appointed to the post 31 months ago. Yu on Friday made a public apology after the Blue House, whose motto is to realise a fair society, reportedly called for an explanation from the ministry. But he denied any undue favour had been shown to his daughter during the hiring process. The ministry this week selected Yus 35-year-old daughter for a mid-level post. It extended the deadline for a second application from the usual 10 days to a month, allegedly in order to grant her enough time to come back with proper documents after she failed in an initial test.Applicants usually have to go through years of preparation for a tough state examination in order to land such a mid-level post at the foreign ministry. She was among three finalists for the specialists job and was selected after an interview. With youth unemployment at around 8.5 percent, the hiring sparked public outrage as the ministrys Internet homepage and other portals were flooded with angry postings demanding Yus resignation.

For this issue we are still hanging around the beach. Because of this years freezing cold weather in Melbourne, it is hard not to miss the nice warm tropical weather of our home town. There are images of small islands, sunny beaches and cool sea breeze circling around in mind constantly. So, if you dont mind, I would like to, once again, recom-mend a holiday destiny where there are beautiful beaches to admire this issue of ANTS.
Pung Gna Bay National Park is an area made of 3 suburbs of a city called Pung Gna. It is a beach-based national park with a clear beauti-ful view of the beach both from a hill and by the water. Pung Gna Bay National Park contains up to 40 small islands from the east of Phuket with beautiful natural accessories such as Ping Gun Mountain, Ta Pu Mountain, Lod Cave and ,of course, the beach. Pung Gna Bay National Park is as big as 400 square kilometres.
The overall look of Pung Gna Bay National Park is made up of beach-es and small islands, each are shaped like huge stone pillars/islands emerged out from the water all around the area. These stone islands are all in their own natural unique shapes with a small group of vegetations on top of them. The National Park also contains some fossils and many different caves for tourists to admire.
Because the south-west part of Pung Gna Bay is an open area, the bay usually get a full hit of monsoon or storm between May to September so there can be strong wind. The depth of seawater in some parts of the beach without small islands can be quite deep with uneven sand levels during storm season, but for the other parts with small island, dont usually get affected by the storm.
There are many different types of sea creatures such as sharks, stingrays, saltwater eels, puffer sh, angel sh and many other beautiful tropical sh around the corals.

First of all Id like to say Happy 4 years Anniversary to ANTS Newsmagazine. I take it we all know the history of ANTS from the column of our last issue. It has been an honour standing by our beloved Thai community in Melbourne for all these years, and with your support, many more years to come. In my previous years I have been able to travel to different countries to share and exchange knowledge of each countrys customs. I found that the thing that seems to impress everyone the most is the distinctive Thai hand gesture (Wai) that is, may we say, none like other.Wai is Thai manner, it is gestured when say Hello and Goodbye. To WAI someone is an act of respect from one to another. To wai is not only for Meeting and Farewell, it is also for saying Thank You and Sorry.Many of Thai kids are born or grew up in Melbourne, but one of the things that theyre taught from a very young age is to wai beautifully. It surely is a custom that will continue for generations.Today we have a lovely little model to demonstrate the correct way to wai for you all to see. Her name is Gemma or Miss Jitlada Smith. She is a Thai-Aussie 5 year old princess who is born and raised in Australia but with 100% Thai heart. Gemma told us that she practices wai-ing ever since she could remember because her mother encourages her to embrace her Thai heritage. Whenever she gets a chance to visit her older relatives from Thailand she would hold up her hands to wai them whilst saying Swad-dee-ka (Hello).The correct way to wai is to put both your hands together in front of you, at with palms and ngers together similar to praying. There are different levels where the hands should be, each level signies different circumstances. Whenever someone wais you, you need to accept it by wai-ing them back. To do so, your hands need to be in front of your chest then raised them up near your chin also tilt your head down forward slightly.There are 3 types of wai in Thailand, each depending on your situation.1. For religious purposesThis includes Buddha, prayers, monks, Buddha or saints gures and religious locations. Put your wai hands up in front of your face then tilt your head down forward, place the tip of your thumbs between your eyebrows and index ngers on your forehead. While doing this you may need to bow slightly.2. For older people or adultsThis includes mother, father, grandparents, teachers and older relatives etc. This type is also for respectable persons. It is similar to the rst type, only the tip of your thumbs is at the tip of your nose and your index ngers between your eyebrows.3. For general public/people, sometimes with same age.Same wai gesture, this time the tip of your thumbs touching your chin, tilt your head down for-ward slightly, while the tip of your index ngers is touching tip of your nose. No need to bow. Wai is an act of positive connection. It is one of Thailands most cherished customs that sym-bolises its culture very clearly.
