    COMMERCIAL COMPLEX AT GHATKOPAR ,MUMBAILOCATIONTHE SITE FOR MY PROJECT IS LOCATED INGHATKOPAR A COMMERCIAL HUB IN MUMBAI.THE SITE IS SURROUNDED BY OTHER COMMERCIALTOWERS, ALL OF THEM HAVE A RECTANGULAR ORSQUARE SHAPE.

    CONCEPTUALSKETCHING AND 3DTHIS PROJECT IS NOT ENTIRELY BASED ON A CONCEPTBUT IS A MIXTURE OF INSPIRATION, EXPERIMENT OF ASIMPLE SHAPE BASED ON THE STUDY OF THESURROUNDING AND THEN HOW THE FUNCTIONAFFECTS THE DESIGN AND CHANGES MADE TO BESTSUIT THE FUNCTION. AS ALL THE OTHER STRUCTURESIN THIS AREA ARE SQUARE OR RECTANGULAR, I ALSODECIDED TO USE THE SAME FORM BUT IN A DIFFERENTWAY.

    BUILDING COOLING CONCEPT

    INSTEAD OF DIRECTLY COOLING THE BUILDING WITH THE HELP OF COLD AIR I HAVE PROPOSED THE USE OF COLD WATER FOR WHICHCHILLING TOWERS HAVE BEEN PROVIDED .THE COLD WATER CAN BE PASSED THROUGH THE PIPES UNDER THE FLOORING WITH THEHELP OF PUMPS AND CIRCULATED THROUGH OUT THE BUILDING. COOLING OF AIR DIRECTLY FROM AIR CONDITIONERS IS NOTGRADUAL AND AIR REMAINS COLD FOR LESS AMOUNT OF TIME . HOWEVER WATER REMAINS COLD FOR MORE AMOUNT OF TIME THUSKEEPING THE AIR IN CONTACT WITH THE FLOOR, ALSO COLD FOR MORE AMOUNT OF TIME BECAUSE OF WHICH THE CHILLING TOWERSNEED TO FUNCTION LESS NUMBER OF TIMES AND DURATION THAN DIRECT AIR CONDITIONERS.

    CONCEPTBEING A HORTICULTURE CENTER I HAD DECIDED TO GIVE THE STRUCTURESA RUSTIC LOOK AND CREATE LEVELS AND SPACES FOR COMMERCIAL FLORALDISPLAYS. ALONG WITH THAT I HAVE TRIED TO USE THE CONTOURS ANDAT THE SAME TIME I HAVE TRIED TO DESIGN THE LAB ( WHITE STRUCTURE) INSUCH A WAY SO AS TO MAKE IT BLEND WITH THE REMAINING STRUCTURES.

    DESIGN DISSERTATION: CENTRAL JAIL (CORRECTION CENTRE)PRISONS IN INDIA ARE DONOT EXACTLY ACT AS A PLACE OF CONTEMP0LATION FOR MOST PRISONERS BECAUSE OF POORINFRASTRUCTURE AND PLANNING. MORE OVER ALL MOST ALL THE PRISONS BUILT IN INDIA ARE FROM THE PRE-INDEPENDENCE PERIOD.HENCE I WANTED TO MAKE A NEW PRISON WITH BETTER FACILITIES AND TO HAVE AN INFRASTRUCTURE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT THANEXISTING PRISONS

    RESEARCHI HAD DONE EXTENSIVE RESEARCH ABOUTPRISONS AND ALSO HAD AN OPPORTUNITYTO MEET WITH THE JAILER AND SOMEINMATES FROM ALIPORE JAIL IN INDIA, WHOHAD COME OUT ON PAROLE TO GIVE ADANCE PERFORMANCE IN MUMBAI. THROUGHMY RESEARCH ALONG WITH VARIOUS DESIGNASPECTS I HAVE ALSO LEARNED THAT THEPRISONERS, IN MAXIMUM CASES HADCOMMITTED CRIME OUT OF NECESSITY ANDALMOST ALL OF THEM ARE READY TOCHANGE, IF GIVEN, A CONDUCIVEENVIRONMENT.

    LOCATIONTHE SITE IS LOCATED AT MALSHEJGHAT ALONG THE NH-222HIGHWAY IN A VALLEY. THE MAINREASONS FOR THE SELECTION OFTHIS SITE ARE:? AS IT IS A CORRECTION CENTRE A SERENE PLACE AWAY FROM CITY IS NEEDED? SHOULD HAVE TERRAIN WHICH WILL MAKE IT IMPOSSIBLE FOR INMATES TO ESCAPE? THE SITE AS A WHOLE HAS CONTOURS AND IS GENERALLY DRY AND ARID, ONLY ACCESS IS THROUGH THE NH-222 HIGHWAY

    DESIGNMY CENTRAL PRISON IS SPECIFICALLY TO BE USED AS A CORRECTION CENTRE. PROVISION OF VARIOUS KINDS OF ACTIVITIES FORTHE PRISONERS LIKE AGRICULTURE , PERFORMING ARTS, SPORTS SUCH AS FOOT BALL, BASKET BALL , AND RACE TRACK ALONGWITH LECTURE HALLS FOR STUDYING AND SMALL SCALE INDUSTRIES HAVE BEEN INCLUDED. THE ABOVE ILLUSTRATIONS ARE ONEOF MY FIRST CONCEPTUAL ATTEMPTS TO DESIGN IN THIS SITE. THE MAIN DESIGN PRINCIPLE WAS ABOUT USING A SHAPE PARTICULARLY AN OCTAGON FOR THE STRUCTURES. BASIC AIM IN THIS DESIGN WAS TO TRY TO REDUCE BLIND SPOTS AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE

    CONCEPT 1.MY FIRST INTENTION FOR DESIGNING WAS TO TO GIVEA BRUTALISTIC LOOK TO THE STRUCTURES. I SOLELYWANTED TO CHANGE THE FORM OF THE PRISONWITHOUT AFFECTING ITS FUNCTION.

    The Faculty Medal is an award, first instituted in 2006, by the faculty of Sir JJ College of Architecture to be given to the best design from a competitionorganized by the college.     Spaces between Buildings: Stitching Mumbai together

    Aim: The aim is to adapt and use leftover spaces between buildings inMumbai for public purposes and amenities.

    Goals of the Design:??The redesign/urban insert using spaces betweenexisting buildings should create a vibrant space for educational,recreational, community or other useful public activities.??The proposed projects should have a positive social andcultural impact on the target community.?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

    Site:The design proposal should first introduce the local context. Thiscould be any neighborhood, anywhere in Mumbai. Oneneighborhood is not favored over another, recognizing the factthat a middle-class context can be as deprived as poorneighborhoods when it comes to social infrastructure.

    Design Guidelines:??Find a relevant site in Mumbai that is a leftover space between two existing buildings (alleys, housegullies, setbacks, ignored spaces) that is around 3.0 to 3.5 meters wide. Any length longer than the widthis acceptable. The site should be accessible from a public road or footpath.??Design an architectural insert that will revitalize the surroundings as well as provide a vital urban amenity.??The insert should be accessible by public, but can be of specific benefit to the immediate neighborhood.??Your design should be contemporary and inspiring. Barrier free environments and those with a minimaldependence on energy consumption will be valued as design entries.

    FACULTY MEDAL: SOCIAL SPACE FOR STUDENTSIN MUMBAI AND NAVI MUMBAI IT IS A VERY COMMON THING TO SEE SCHOOL CHILDREN USINGFOOTPATHS , STREETS OR BUS STOPS AND RAILWAY STATIONS AS THEIR PLACE OF FUN AND FROLIC AS WELLAS FOR STUDYING. THE SITE THAT I HAVE SELECTED IS LOCATED IN THE VASHI GAOTHAN AREA IN NAVIMUMBAI. THIS AREA IS BASICALLY A SMALL SETTLEMENT INSIDE THE VASHI CITY LIMITS AND CONSISTS OF G TOG+4 STRUCTURES. THE RESIDENTS OF THIS AREA ARE TENANTS AND SUB TENANTS RESULTING IN VERY LITTLEOR NO PLACE FOR CHILDREN AND STUDENTS TO INTERACT AND STUDY AT HOME. MORE OVER LACK OFPLAY GROUNDS AND OPEN SPACES IN THIS AREA HAS RESULTED IN CHILDREN USING STREETS FOR STUDIESAND INTERACTION.

    THE SITE

    THE SELECTED SITE IS MARKED IN RED. THIS SITE IS A SPACE BETWEEN TWO BUILDINGS WHICH HAS AWIDTH OF 3M AT THE ENTRANCE AND INCREASES TO 3.4M. BECAUSE THE WIDTH OF THE SITE IS LESS ANDTIGHT, I HAVE USED THE CONCEPT OF RAMPS AND FLAT SPACES TO BECONSTRUCTED BETWEEN THE BUILDINGS. THE STRUCTURE PROPOSED IS A STEEL STRUCTURE WITH I-SECTIONS (ISMB 250) AS SUPPORTING MEMBERS.

    ALL THE RAMPS AND FLATSPACES ARE GOING TO BECOVERED WITH ARTIFICIALTURF SO THAT CHILDRENCAN EASILY SIT ON THEM.

ONE OF THE PROJECTS IN WHICH I AM DEEPLY INVOLVEDRIGHT FROM THE DESIGN LEVEL IS " UNIVERSAL HIGH SCHOOL AURANGABAD"WHICH IS CURRENTLY BEING BUILT AT T-1 INDUSTRIAL AREA, CHIKALTHANA,AURANGABAD, INDIA.

    THE CLIENT AND CONCEPT: THE CLIENT HERE IS THEOWNER OF A NUMBER OF SCHOOLS IN MAHARASHTRA, MOSTOF THEM DESIGNED BY US. HE WANTED THE SCHOOL TO HAVEAN INTERNATIONAL LOOK BUT AT THE SAME TIME BLENDWITH THE CONSERVATIVE ARCHITECTURE OF AURANGABAD.
