THESIS / DISSERTATIONDoctoral Thesis: Characterization of Urban Heat Islands over

Megacity Delhi and Simulating its effect on Building Energy Consumption with Mitigation Strategies.

Supervisor : Prof. Manju Mohan, Professor, Centre for Atmospheric Sciences, IIT DDuration : January, 2007 to February, 2015. The present research work attempts to quantify the impact of urbanization on the micro and macro climate of megacity Delhi. It begins with the assessment of changing land-use/land-cover of the city using remote sensing data and steps-in for quantifying the associated changes in the Surface Air Temperature (SAT), Land Surface Temperature (LST) and the respective Diurnal Temperature Range (DTR). With the help of the extensive field campaigns undertaken for observing the meteorological parameters like SAT, LST, Relative humidity and wind speed across the city along with the satellite data for the LST, micro-mapping of the Urban Heat Islands (UHI) of the city was done. The impact of the altered meteorological conditions viz.-a-viz. the UHI effect across the city on the building energy requirement was numerically assessed using a building energy model. Finally, the effectiveness of various building envelope modifications for countering the UHI effect was numerically investigated which includes using the newly coined bamboo-concrete wall panels.

M.Tech. Major Project: Assessment of Air Quality of Delhi using Statistical Modelling.

Supervisor : Prof. Manju Mohan of CAS, IIT D and Prof. Mukesh Khare of CED, IIT DDuration : July 2005 to June 2006. The basic aim of the project was to assess the Air Quality of Delhi using Air Quality Index and forecast the pollutant concentration using various statistical techniques. For the air quality assessment, a new concept of Pollution Category Number PCN was coined. PCN is a number which is simultaneously considers the concentration of the respective pollutant and occurrence of the particular air quality (according to the classification of the Air Quality Index) over a period of time. The seasonal and annual assessment for the duration 1996 – 2004 was done for Delhi. For forecasting the air pollutant concentration, five statistical techniques namely SES, ARRSES, HLM, ARX and ARIMA were used.
