Who Suffers From Anxiety?

People who you would never suspect in amillion years! In fact, Anxiety is such a

widespread disorder that virtually ANYONE cansuffer from it. Your uncle Buddy, your GrandmaJean, your sister Annie, your neighbor Joe, yourbest friend Patti, or your brother George.

But, because Anxiety is one of those“sweep it under the carpet”, “embarrassment-type-I-think-I-might-be-going-crazy” disorders, people don't like to talk about it. Or admit theyare long time sufferers.

Especially if you are someone always in thepublic eye, such as Kim Basinger. Kim had a

long, difficult struggle with Anxiety disorder, and kept it a secret for quite a good portion of her life. You would never guess it to see her upon the “silver screen” though would you? Butshe in fact has spoken out publicly about her

Page 12: Anxiety Be Gone!

battle with Anxiety in the hopes that this mayraise awareness of this dreaded disorder. And ithas. She is one brave soul to expose a hugeportion of her private life like this. Kudos to youKim!

Let us not forget also that Anxiety isbelieved  to be an inherited disorder, although

your mom or dad may not show the outwardsymptoms of it. Remember, this is anembarrassment disorder , or one that makes thesufferer believe they are, or are going, crazy. However, not every person who has experiencedan Anxiety attack will develop a full blowndisorder, but don't discount the fact that

potentially they COULD.

Here's an interesting statistical fact foryou. According to NIMH (National Institute of Mental Health) approximately 2.4 MILLION adultAmericans suffer from some form of Anxiety or

Panic Disorder. That's about 40 Million! And, itis twice as common in women as it is in men.

Hmmm… Maybe this could be a contributingfactor in why women worry so much aboutthings?

Coincidentally, the major reason for people

not knowing what is happening to them, or thatthey are suffering from Anxiety or PanicDisorder COULD be attributed to the fact thatmany cases reported began in adolescence. Therefore, a child may not be as affluent indescribing what they are experiencing

compared to the ability of that of an adult.

The key here is to LISTEN TO YOURCHILDREN!! You would NOT  want them toendure a childhood full of suffering and noteven know the reason for it.

Another interesting fact to be aware of isthat Anxiety attacks don't only happen when aperson is awake! They can, and often do,happen while sleeping. How scary do you thinkthat may be to wake up to? Indescribable wouldbe putting it MILDLY.

What Is Anxiety?

Imagine being stood in front of a high speedlocomotive and you are frozen solid to the spot.Unable to move, knowing what is about to

happen, and can do NOTHING to help yourself escape.

Now imagine being plunged into thisscenario several times A DAY.

This is what it feels like for an Anxiety

Disorder sufferer. Or as close as it can bedescribed.

The only difference is, there is no speedingtrain barreling towards you. It's unseen. Andcomes from out of nowhere. Without warning.

Crippling you in utter fear.

Sound intense?

It IS.

 The “official” “unofficial” description of

Anxiety is a disorder in which the individualafflicted feels an intense, irrational fear and animpending sense of doom or dread.

What this means is that, in “layman'sterms”, if you suffer from Anxiety Disorder, or

any form of it, that you will be confronted withparalyzing fear for no apparent reason that willmake you feel as if there is no possible way outof it. And you can experience this unprovokedfear at any time within the course of a day.

In addition to suffering from AnxietyDisorder, an individual may also have othercommon disorders that go hand-in-hand with itsuch as Depression, Obsessive-CompulsiveDisorder, Agoraphobia, or any other number of Phobias that make it all the more important toseek treatment for.

What Causes Anxiety?

Short and sweet? Everything and NOTHING!Reread the definition of it above. Now thepicture should become a bit more clear.

In most documented cases of Anxietyattacks, the patient rarely reports any eventthat would have triggered the onset of theattack itself.

Now, with that said, let me also explain

that when an Anxiety sufferer returns back to asituation or setting where a previous attackhappened, this could trigger another attack, just because they'll be reminded of howterrifying that first attack was, andunconsciously  be thinking about it successfully

triggering yet another attack!

It's a vicious cycle of fear.

And the greatest fear of an Anxietyattack/disorder sufferer? To have ANOTHER

Page 17: Anxiety Be Gone!

ATTACK! Hopefully this is beginning to make alittle more sense to you now. Of course theattack hasn't killed them, and most likely won't,but it can sure feel like you're dying at themoment when an attack is occurring though.

So, the greatest determiner of having anAnxiety attack is also your greatest treasure,

your MIND. Even though you can tell someonethat is having an Anxiety attack that "It's All InYour Mind", this usually comes out leaving themfeel you are trying to be condescending to theirplight. Not a nice feeling I'm sure you'll agree.Even though you don't mean it in that way, this

is most likely the way it is received. To be more “clinical” about Anxiety, it is,

in fact, “all in your mind”. Because the BRAIN iswhere all your Anxiety stems from. Many studieshave focused mainly on two specific portions of the brain that are responsible for inducing

feelings of fear and anxiety.

It is simply an unannounced trigger thatsets off one's “fight or flight” defensemechanism, kicks in the adrenaline, and BAM! A

full blown Anxiety attack is on it's way forward.

Many times, Anxiety is brought about dueto increased stress from daily life. Bills pilingup, children seemingly out of control, pressurefrom work, family, and other events can triggeranxiety…

What Are The DifferentTypes Of Anxiety?

Anxiety/Panic Disorder

This is the form of the disorder that bringson sudden attacks that paralyze you with fearfor no apparent reason. Of course there areabsolutely underlying factors that cause theseattacks, however, the sufferer rarely knowswhat those are, unless they seek professional

help from a family physician or a clinicalspecialist who are equip to deal with this typeof disorder.

Most common symptoms, or the symptomsof the attacks would be dizziness, feeling faint, increased breathing, pounding heart, tingling or

numbing sensations in the hands and feet, fearof impending doom, a disconnection withreality, or a total lack or loss of control.

People that suffer from this disorder mayhonestly feel as if they are dying, having a heartattack, or losing their minds. These attacks canoccur at any time, and even while the suffereris asleep.

Anxiety/Panic Disorder is often connectedwith other serious disorders such as depression.

Due to the fact that the attacks associated withthis disorder are such terrifying events, thesufferer may make several trips to the localemergency room not really knowing the truecause as it may be difficult to get a correctdiagnosis at first.

This disorder can be very debilitating to thesufferer and can extremely hinder their dailyactivities. If a sufferer experiences an attackwhile driving, they will avoid driving to avoidhaving another attack. This can be true of anytype of daily activity such as grocery shopping,

doing dishes, watching television, etc. However, this form of disorder is the most

treatable of all the Anxiety Disorders, and so anindividual experiencing, or believe they areexperiencing symptoms of this disorder should

seek help and effective treatment through theirchosen health care professional.

Social Anxiety Disorder

This type of disorder more commonlystrikes when a sufferer is placed within a socialsetting. It is also referred to as Social Phobia

and can be a very traumatic and debilitatingdisorder making it near impossible for oneafflicted with it to be comfortable at any socialgathering. This includes everyday functions suchas attending class, going out to dinner at arestaurant, or even going to work.

The person suffering from this disorder hasstrong self-conscious issues and may often timesfeel as if they are not welcome, or really a partof the social setting. They feel as if they areconstantly being judged or watched by othersfor no apparent reason other than those thingsthey themselves feel self-conscious about.

The social settings can be those that occuron a daily basis, or those that are rareoccurrences, such as a party, public speaking

events, etc. Often times, the sufferer willexperience any of the following symptoms whenplaced in social gatherings: profuse sweating, trembling or shaking, feeling sick to theirstomachs, inability to speak, or blushing.

A person suffering from this type of disorder can become so upset by an upcoming

social event that it will plague them for weeksin advance working them into an anxious frenzyby the time the event finally comes around.

In an attempt to “self-medicate”, a personexperiencing this disorder will often times turnto alcohol or “street” drugs to cope which leads

to more disorders springing up.

This disorder usually happens sometimeduring early childhood or adolescence andcontinues on throughout adulthood.Fortunately, some powerful mental techniquesexist to let go to anxiety…

General Anxiety Disorder

This disorder is a heightened sense of anxiety or worry experienced on a daily basis. Itis a chronic disorder that is continuous

throughout the sufferer’s day. They experiencedifficulty concentrating or constant, excessiveworry about every day concerns with aninability to control those overwhelming feelingsof worry.

Symptoms can also include increasednervousness, irritability, fatigue or restlessness.

While not as extreme a condition such asAnxiety/Panic Disorder, it is still a serious“illness” that requires attention…

What Can You Do To BattleBack?

First and foremost, you MUST  realize thisAnxiety attack for what it is when you are

having one. Understand and acknowledge thatyou ARE HAVING AN ANXIETY ATTACK , and thatit won't last forever. Most attacks only lastanywhere from a few minutes up to no longerthan a half an hour. Give or take.

Even though it may be difficult, try to lay

down and RELAX. If you can't lay down, sit still, close your eyes and focus on slow, even, breathing. This will help ease the symptomssomewhat. Not completely mind you, butenough that you can make it through.

The REAL trick in battling Anxiety is to

redirect your train of thought. Keep yourself asbusy as you can and let the thoughts of fear of an oncoming attack melt away. They will. Andthe more you practice this reversal of thought, the better you will get at it and be able to

What Can You Do ToSupport Someone SufferingFrom An Anxiety Disorder?

As we go through this information, I want

you to understand that this section is of importance to those trying to help anotherperson who is experiencing, or dealing with,Anxiety on a daily basis. How you providesupport to them may help them to control theirAnxiety to some degree.

First thing is first. NEVER belittle or try todownplay someone's Anxiety Disorder. Don't justdismiss their episode as a one time event, or tryand “solve” their problem throughrationalization.

You have to understand that when a personis actually going through an Anxiety attackrationality is not something they areconcentrating on. Or listening to.

Page 27: Anxiety Be Gone!

This is an extremely frightening experienceand no matter how much you'd want to, youCANNOT MAKE THIS EXPERIENCE GO AWAY .Only the individual who is HAVING the attackhas the power to do this. Not YOU.

The absolute WORST thing you can do isto act as if they are LYING or ACTING to get

attention. This is simply not the case. While youmay BELIEVE  this to be true because you havenever yourself experienced the unrelentingterror of an Anxiety attack, that doesn't meanthat it isn't happening to someone you careabout.

Imagine for a second that you hadwitnessed a "physical" accident that your lovedone or dear friend was a part of. Something youcould SEE the outcome from. Wouldn't you doeverything in your power to help them?

What if they were trapped inside a car that

was on fire? What if they were trappedunderwater and were drowning? You wouldwant to aid them, wouldn't you? What if theyhad stopped breathing?

Page 28: Anxiety Be Gone!

Would you just stand around watching thempass away? Or would you do everything youcould to administer CPR to them, even if youweren't sure you were doing it correctly?

While the above examples are extreme, sometimes, to an Anxiety sufferer, it absolutelyfeels like the end of their world. As if they are

drowning in a sea of chaos and disparity, unableto pull themselves out.

Also, by attempting to in effect ignore theAnxiety attack, you are probably contributing toanother disorder that goes hand in hand withAnxiety… Depression.

Instead of holding them down “underwater”, try throwing them a life preserver thenext time they have an attack.

How can you do that? Just BE  there forthem. Let them know that while you may not

understand what they are going through, youare there for them and will stay until they feelbetter.

Do NOT try and force someone out of an

Page 29: Anxiety Be Gone!

Anxiety attack. It could make the attack thatmuch worse for them. Just let the attackhappen naturally, and in most, if not all, cases, their bodies will help them come out of the 'hot'zone all on it's own. And if it doesn't, get themto the nearest emergency room as soon as youcan. Or call an emergency squad to take them.

Also, NEVER try and give someone sufferingfrom an Anxiety attack any type of prescriptiondrugs that have not been prescribed by theirfamily physician. Seems like common sense, butwhen you see a loved one going through such apainful event, you really want to help them.Believe me, THIS WILL NOT HELP THEM.

Getting them to a professional source, such asan emergency room or their own familyphysician, or complementary health careprofessionals, such as an NLP practitioner, forhelp WILL.

4. Find out what you are imagining that is creating this unreal fear. What kind of pictures are you seeing?

What do they look like? What kind of sounds are you hearing?

What are the qualities of the sounds?

5. Once you are aware of exactly how you are creating your anxiety in your mind, just disrupt the pictures and sounds.White out the picture turn off the sound, just like if you were to

switch off the TV... It's that easy! Click!

6. Now think about what you want to happen. Make it as clear

and specific as possible.

7. Plan some action steps to make the outcome more likely. You

need to do something. It's only by taking action that youeliminate unreal fear.

8. Mentally rehearse what you want to happen. Rehearse thescene, make it as real as possible, engage your five senses, just

as we’ve talked about in the previous process.
