around emotional health and get active in providing emotional health resources. “What we’re learning is that mental wellness and health has been branded all wrong from the get go,” admits Adcox. “If there’s anything this pandemic is teaching us, it’s that taking a look at who you are and who you’re becoming, working on becoming the best version of yourself … that’s counseling, and that’s not what’s wrong with you. That’s actually what’s right with you.” He advocates companies being more proactive and informed. Warning signs to look for in yourself and your team include a significant change in the way someone is showing up at work. “If people are more emotional than normal, if people are not showing up as much, if people are a bit dissociated or detached in meetings or distracted in meetings, these are traditional signs that you should be checking on their wellbeing,” notes Adcox. One of the practices he uses with his team at Onsite is taking the time to check in personally before diving into work in every meeting. It may be uncomfortable in the beginning, because as Adcox points out, “It goes directly against traditional management theory, which is keep emotions out of the workplace.” That theory, he says, is outdated and “work should be a nurturing, safe place to bring out the best in us.” Create Humanity: A framework Adcox teaches/consults within the industry is something he calls the “creative’s or artist’s dilemma.” Highly public professions create abnormal life circumstances, and abnormal life circumstances create high levels of distress. Unaddressed stress creates loneliness, anxiety, disconnection, addictions, anxiety, depression, etc., all of which kill creativity. “It’s ironic that creativity is what brought a lot of people to this industry that, in some ways, is designed to kill it.” The only reason it’s a dilemma is because we don’t educate people or talk about it on the front end. If we do, what is one of our greatest obstacles as music industry

professionals turns into our greatest opportunity, because as Adcox says, “We can use it to our advantage once we know it and understand it.” To answer the question of how we come out of this pandemic better than we came into it as an industry, Adcox concludes “Wake up the humanness of the industry, so we can better take care of our own. The reason I work in this industry is I believe art distributed to culture through the lens of music has a broad global reach and can effectively change people’s hearts and minds as much or more than mental health education does.” Connect with Adcox on social media @milesadcox and reach him via email here; learn more about Onsite here. —Caitlin DeForest

A day in the self-isolated life of RCA’sNiko Moon: Instead of touring, I’ve been spending my time at home. Fortunately, my recording studio is at my home, so I’ve been working on new music every day. And my main writing partner is my wife, so I’m very lucky when it comes to that. I wake up, meditate, read for a few hours, exercise, eat lunch, write/record new music, dinner, take cooking classes online, Netflix, then it’s time for bed. Depending on what day it is, I’ll do lives with my fans — my favorite part of the day! It’s my wife, dog and me. We are pretty much connected at the hip, even before the quarantine, so not much has changed. We are really good at giving each other space though, and our dog is loving all of the extra attention! I’m learning how to cook. Before, I could only make a bowl of cereal. Now … I’ve stepped up to spaghetti.

I had never gone live before, but since quarantine started, I go live numerous times throughout the week. I absolutely love it! I feel much more connected to my fans now than I did before, and I can’t wait to tour again and see them in person! I’m currently rewatching The Office for the fifth time. It’s my favorite show … and at this point … it’s bordering on an obsession. If you’ve never seen it, I would highly recommend. For some reason I’ve gotten back into cereal. I haven’t really eaten cereal since I was a kid, but I have a bowl every day now. My go-to is Fruity Pebbles. I try to keep a glass-half-full look at life and find the good in every day. I’ve been able to write/record new songs that I can’t wait to release and — most importantly — spend more time with my family. Lunar Rover

I’ve had a great experience in Nashville, great people and artists to work with – I have a dream job right now. But I have to balance that by saying it’s not been a cakewalk, either. Being one of only a few Black women in the country music space, if there’s a situation – a comment, an inappropriate joke, someone’s disrespectful or maybe outright racist – my experience is that the community around me has remained silent. No one has ever come to my office after the fact to acknowledge something. It’s just been silence. But that’s specifically about the issue of race, not my overall Nashville experience. Can you give some context to that? How often have you been in that situation and experienced that silence? CW: This is a very subtle thing, but after work one day we all went to [a nearby] restaurant, and there was a guy at the valet wearing a Confederate flag visor. It just kind of slaps you in the face. I’m not saying that the guy did or said anything, but I have to be aware. You can be in a meeting, and someone will make a joke or say something inappropriate. I shared the story in one of the first Zoom panels on race about getting a call from a coworker warning me about coming to a video shoot saying, “We’re in the middle of nowhere. It’s a little shady. There are pamphlets down in this venue, and it’s very suspect. Maybe you should not come to this.” You never know when you actually will encounter it in a subtle way or in a specific, tangible way. James, how has your experience been in country? JM: Being one of the first Black promotion guys in rock 21 years ago, and then for the last six years in country, the industry side of country has actually been very good ... very welcoming. When I went to Rock stations the first time, I got the typical, “You don’t

sound Black.” You see them processing in their head, “Oh, shit. Did I say anything? Did I make an inappropriate joke?” That was 20 years ago, and a lot of people have matured, plus outlets like yours publish photos, so it wasn’t a shock in country like it was back in the day. Taking it to the streets, and specifically the country shows I go to, that’s a bit more suspect. No matter how many times an artist says, “This is our [label rep], our National Director,” white people at these shows are shocked a guy who looks like me has a role in the careers of Blake Shelton, Dan + Shay or Chris Janson. You can see people are like, “Whoa, I thought he was security,” which is a running joke with a lot of our artists. But it doesn’t bother me, because my artists, bosses and team are what I give a shit about. As long as they know the process, who I am, what I do and respect me for that, I’m cool. But it’s weird. [Warner Music Nashville Chairman/CEO John Esposito] and I had a meeting today, because [Warner Music Group] hired a diversity and inclusion guy – Maurice Stinnett. He’s challenging all of us to find blind spots we need to work on and put on his radar. In Espo’s defense, we have the jobs we do because we’re good at what we do. And all of a sudden, we’re spotlighted because of what we look like. Espo didn’t hire me to check a box; he hired me because of what I did at Big Machine. So, in the industry, I’m good. When you’re in public, it’s a struggle. Like when you see the Confederate flag at shows, which happened right before [the shutdown]. You think about it and you block it, which is kind of what Black people have been doing for a long time – deflect and go. Honestly, I took more heat in the rock world. Rakiyah, can you share your experience on the creative/publishing side of the business? RM: Speaking to what everyone else has said, my three years in Nashville have been amazing. All of the artists and writers I work with have treated me with kindness and never made me feel

different. That said, when you go to shows, the initial shock of, “What are you doing here?” continues. In group settings where you’re the only Black person, you get, “Do you like country music? How’d you get here?” It’s the assumption that we don’t know what we’re talking about or doing. Why would we do it if we didn’t love it? It has not affected my career, and I’m the type of person who doesn’t let those things affect me. I’m going to put my head down, do what I do best and work hard so when people see me it’s not, “Oh, there’s the only Black person.” Instead, they go, “There’s that girl working really hard.” The conversations we’re having now [about race] have made it feel more present. We’re talking about it more often, and people may be more aware of the things they say. But everyone’s been very kind. Correct me if I’m wrong, but it doesn’t sound like issues of race ever had you questioning your career path in country. But, did a mentor or friend help you through not seeing a lot of representation in the country world? RM: Being the strong Black woman my mother raised me to be, I would never let anyone make me shift my career due to my skin color, but I do think the people you meet along the way are very important, whether they’re mentors or just people you can speak with. For me, it’s my boyfriend, Seth England, who works with Candice. He was the first person that said I should move here – not because I’m Black, but because he saw how much I love country music. Then there’s Nate Lowery and Brett James at Cornman Music who were like, “You love music, we can teach you the rest.” Coming from a New York pop label to do publishing in Nashville makes no sense, but they trusted me to try it. Not because I was Black. They said, “We think you’re good at what you do.” That led me to BMG, where Kos Weaver said the same thing. Those are people who opened the door for me and everyone else after me. CW: I have family and close friends who don’t work in Nashville that I might turn to if I need some advice. Industry-wise, Chris Stacey and Chad Schultz hired me early on in my Nashville career – a great experience for me – and then Keith Urban and Gary Borman hired me for one of my first big jobs and race never even came up. I experienced nothing but support and value from them. From there, I got to work really closely with Universal’s Cindy

Mabe, Mike Dungan, Joanna Carter and Lori Christian, who I’ve kept in touch with over the last decade. I’ve known Seth England for several years now, and we’d always talk shop. Those are people I would credit with having a strong influence on my positive experience in Nashville. FB: The closest thing I ever had to a mentor professionally was [late consultant] Rusty Walker, who lived right down the road and started his career at this company. He never made me feel like I had something more to prove. He never made me feel like this was a conversation we needed to have. It did come up, but only casually in conversation. Rusty was my door into CRS and the greater Country radio community. I’ve also forged really strong friendships with people like owner/operator Ken Forte in Dickson, Tennessee and Tosh Jackson from Sacramento. Those two men were on the top of my list to find and spend some time with over those four or five days [during CRS] in Nashville. There is a kinship, but it’s not, “I’m overwhelmed by all the white people here. Let me go find Ken.” It’s more like, “There are very, very few of us. And while nobody is actively pushing us out of the room, we are very keenly aware of how few of us there are.” JM: It’s funny you mention Tosh, because he and I had this running joke at CRS or other meetings when I first started. He’d say, “Alright, my name has been James Marsh about five times today.” And I’d answer, “Shit, I’ve been called Tosh about 12.” We made it a joke, because we knew people meant well. We didn’t take it as, “Oh my gosh, there’s somebody saying racist, dumb shit.” We just took it like, “Oh, they couldn’t tell the difference.” Where’s the line between being seen solely as a highly competent executive and being recognized as someone who is Black, which comes with specific challenges – in country music and America in general? Is there a balance to be struck? JM: When I first started, I went to [Warner SVP/Artist Development] Shane Tarleton, because he’s a guru of navigating the waters, and I knew this was something special. Not in an ego way, but in having this opportunity and wanting my daughter or anyone’s child with a different skin pigment to be able to walk through any door for a job. I told Shane, “I don’t care if you send

me to a pig judging contest, I’ll be out there in full to show people that you can look like me and be in this position.” Showing my age here, but I like to refer to Ed Bradley from 60 Minutes. A lot of us didn’t know we could be television anchors until we saw the coolest Black man under the sun on Sunday, with his earring, his salt and pepper, and his badass suit. I remind people of that, because I wanted to set that sort of standard, even in my pop and rock days. I remember Tony Bracy, who worked at Capitol for a very long time and now works for Scooter Braun. He came in right after me, and we were really the only two Black guys. I made it a joke to break the tension, but I would tell him, “I’m your freaking Rosa Parks. Don’t f- this up.” I sat in the back of the bus. I took those kicks. You try to put yourself out there, shake those hands and kiss those babies. My mentor is Dale Hansen, longtime sports anchor in Dallas – a white man who took me under his wing at 18 when I was still in college, brought me on Cowboys road trips and introduced me to people who had those redneck tendencies. He would tell people, “I can take James to a Klan meeting and, by the time we leave, at least two of them are going to be his friend.” Because, I didn’t let anything like that intimidate me. I looked everybody in the eye; I shook hands. I gave a great firm handshake, and Dale gave me

the confidence that I can walk into any room and handle it. Mike Easterlin gave me my first job at Island Def Jam. He told Lyor Cohen I had the personality to do promotion and was Black. Lyor was like, “Whoa. This is the future. Why do I have 16 promotion people if I’ve got a guy who can walk into any station – Hip Hop, Rock or AC? This is the prototype!” Lyor and Julie Greenwald gave me the opportunity. Then my wife, of course. Look for Part Two of this Q&A in Country Aircheck Weekly Oct. 26. The Oct. 19 issue will be devoted to coverage of the St. Jude Country Cares Seminar. –Chuck Aly

A day in the self-isolated life of Entercom WUSN/Chicago Digital Content/Morning Show Producer Erin Creedon:

I recently transitioned from on-air morning show contributor to the show producer and was given more behind-the-scenes responsibilities. That meant I could sleep in until 6:30am and work from home instead of being up at 3am and commuting to the studio downtown.

The first thing I do is turn on WUSN to make sure all the written content matches the day’s topics and segments that are live on the website and social media. Throughout the day, I scroll socials and various news outlets for topic ideas for the next day’s show, and I will write three to five blog posts per day that are pushed to our social platforms. I’m also in charge of making sure any breaking news is uploaded in a timely manner, as well as writing localized and relatable promos and liners. I’ll cut a few spots for endorsements, brainstorm promotional ideas, and then break for dinner and a workout before show prepping for the next day and researching my on-air country news segment, Erin’s Deep Dish On Country.

I still live at home with my parents – or, my roommates, as I like to call them – and they are both retired, so we spend all day together. They are good at respecting my space and understanding when I’m working and unable to chat. We like to binge watch TV together, which has helped keep us from driving one another crazy.

I have an official office setup in my

room, but I don’t like to sit so close to my bed all the time. I work outside on my patio when the weather is nice or at the dining room table next to a large bay window that brings in natural light. I prefer to take my Zoom meetings outside, because I enjoy a change of scenery and don’t have to worry about disturbing my parents roommates.

Live streams on Facebook have been especially useful with our audience, and our morning show goes live almost every day for a check-in and to ask listeners about one of the topics we are discussing on-air. As a station, we’ve changed our social media to be more active and engaging, and have used more polls and questions where our listeners can chime in with their opinions. On a personal level, social media has been the key to staying in touch with friends and family. DM’ing someone a meme that made you think of them is how we show love during this time.

I can’t wait to go to a concert and hear live music, but I also want to hug my grandma. We’ve been very cautious around her and have worn our masks when visiting.

I’m currently binge-watching Parenthood – for the third time – because I think it’s one of the most underrated TV shows. I’ve also been reading more Colleen Hoover books. Musically, I’m into Lauren Alaina’s new EP, Hardy’s new album, and music from Avenue Beat and Priscilla Block.

Aside from the extra time with my parents and dog, my silver lining has been the additional

sleep! I’ve also had more time to dedicate to my Fantasy Football team, and I currently have the best record in the league!

New CouNtry AirCheCk/MediAbAse reporter weights

These are the new weights for Country Aircheck/Mediabase Country Reporters for both the Published panel and the Activator panel, based on audience figures from Nielsen. Weights for stations in PPM markets use a three-month average of September-October-November 2019 AQH Persons. The Fall 2019 AQH Persons figure is used for diary markets. Fall 2019 audience estimate are used to avoid the large winter and spring 2020 audience fluctuations created by the pandemic. The weights are calculated using this formula: Market rank is multiplied

by 10 and then added to the station’s AQH Persons. A station’s weight is determined by dividing that adjusted AQH by the leading Country station’s adjusted AQH. For this period, that station is WNSH/New York with an adjusted AQH of 23,910. For Activator weights, that station is WQXK/Youngstown, OH with an adjusted AQH of 7,830. Station Weight = (Market rank X 10) divided by 23,910 (7,830 for Activator stations.) These new weights are effective with this week’s Country Aircheck/Mediabase Country chart.

“I’m just different. I like to think it’s because I show my heart to my listeners, show my integrity to everyone and love talking to people. I’m constantly prepping and thinking of ideas to incorporate on my show, website and social media. Radio DJs can be the equivalent of a therapist or bartender, except instead of handing out prescriptions or alcohol, we hand out vibes and emotions, creating memorable experiences along the way. That’s what I have always believed, and that’s how I work.”
