Port clubsover 100 years

OVER the past 100 years little has separated Port rivals South and East Fremantle – and heading into Round 6 of the McDonald’s WAFL season that separation has been reduced to 3.08 percentage points. The Sharks head into enemy territory at Fremantle

Oval this Monday with that slight edge as both teams have won three and lost two of their opening five games. Bulldogs coach Todd Curley has a team coming off a loss to Subiaco, while Sharks coach Steve Malaxos steered his team to a big win over Swan Districts at Steel Blue Oval last week. Curley was pretty forthright in his review of his team after the loss to the reigning premiers and could be expected to ring the changes as the in-form and unbeaten Bulldogs reserves team has a strong band of players pushing for selection. While this ANZAC Day weekend we recognise the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli landing on April 25, 1915, WAFL historian Steve Davies has provided the Football Budget with some fascinating facts about one of football’s enduring rivalries over the past 100 years. East Fremantle was formed in 1898 and South Fremantle was admitted to the WAFL two years later in 1900.

Since 1915, the two teams have met 323 times – with the Sharks victorious on 164 occasions and the Bulldogs 156. There have been three draws. Only five meetings between these clubs have occurred on the exact date of April 25 and neither club has won consecutive ANZAC Day matches. The games were in 2009 (SF won by six), 2010 (EF won by 46), 2011 (SF won by 29), 2013 (EF won by 29) and 2014 (SF won by 17). The first year league games were played on April 25 was 1953. A full set of four matches was played in Round 1that year with East Fremantle taking on Claremont in a game that celebrated the opening of East Fremantle Oval), while West Perth played South Fremantle, East Perth took on Subiaco and Perth played Swan Districts. The Perth and East Perth clash at Lathlain Park this Saturday will be the 48th game played on April 25. When it comes to Monday games, of which we have two this round, 25 league games were played on a Monday to the end of 1914. A total of 320 have been played in the 100 years from 1915 to 2014.

Since 1898 when the behind counted as a score (before then only goals counted) - there have been only four drawn matches on a Monday. West Perth drew with East Perth in June 2012, Claremont and West Perth drew in April 1969, Subiaco and West Perth drew in June 1921 and East Fremantle and Perth drew in June 1906.

• SouthandEasthavemet53timesoverallinApril.The first time was in 1912. South Fremantle lead 27 wins to East Fremantle 26 in April clashes.

• Thiswillbethe58thtimeSouthFremantleandEast Fremantle have met on a Monday. This excludes a Monday Derby under lights at the Showgrounds on March 18, 1968 as part of a pre-season night premiership competition.

• East Fremantle has played 103MondayWAFLgames. The first was June 5, 1905. The Sharks have won 58, lost 44 and drawn 1.

• The first South Fremantle and East FremantleMonday clash was on June 3, 1907.

Given it’s the Anzac Day weekend, I thought it only appropriate to start this week’s WAFL Collectables with a very rare piece of war memorabilia that dates back to 1916. As many readers would know, plenty of WAFL players ventured overseas with the Australian defence forces during WWI and many of them never returned. While they were on service, some of them found a way to indulge their love of footy on the battlefields of Europe. For instance, I recently learned of the discovery of a wartime letter from East Perth player Jack Crawford, who revealed that he was one of seven WAFL players who had played for the 44th Battalion in two games against the Divisional Ammunition Column at Allery in France in October, 1918. Matches like this were played whenever troops had the opportunity and would have come as a welcome respite from the horrors of war. But the most famous wartime match was played in 1916 in London between members of the Third Australian Division and the Australian Training Units. The match was organised by swimmer Frank Beaurepaire and came to be known as the “Pioneer Exhibition Game”. What’s interesting to note is that there were plenty of West Australians playing that day. Most notable among them was Cyril Hoft, who won a Sandover Medal with Perth after the war. He played with the Third Australian Division, as did James Foy, who played 59 games with the Redlegs before the war and, sadly, never made it home. There were more Sandgropers playing for the Australian Training Units team. Percy Trotter wasn’t technically a West Australian, having originally played for Fitzroy, but he finished his career at East Fremantle. It was a similar story for Sydney-born John Scullin, who played on the Goldfields and in the second-string competition in Perth. Then there was Maxfield, of Fremantle, Thomas Paine, of Northam, AJ Andrews, from the Goldfields, and Drummond of “Pubiaco”, presumably Subiaco. The Third Division team emerged victorious by 16 points in front of a few thousand spectators, most of whom were soldiers. Few of the soldiers could resist buying a program from one of the pretty English girls who had been employed to sell them at the gates. But how many of the programs made it back to Australia? Comprising just 12 pages, it featured cartoons by Australian artists, including Ruby Lind, Cecil Hart, Laurie Taylor and Will Dyson. I have seen just one copy in my time, which is held in a government archive, though I am aware of a few others in archives around the country. And I know of one that was apparently in

private hands in Western Australia. I doubt the owner would have any problem selling it for $300 or more given its age and its appeal to collectors of WAFL memorabilia, VFL memorabilia and, of course, WWI memorabilia. The VFL clubs used to be regular visitors to Western Australia before the Eagles joined the Melbourne-based competition in 1987. But some clubs obviously enjoyed the trip more than others. For instance, the warm Perth air obviously agreed with Essendon because they came west in 1924, 1947, 1952, 1955, 1961, 1982, 1983 and 1985. Geelong, meanwhile, only crossed the Nullarbor for matches against a combined league team in 1965 and again in 1975. When I say a “combined league side”, however, I’m not talking about a combined WAFL side. Geelong came across to play a combined South Suburban Murray Football League team on both occasions. And didn’t the SSMFL enjoy the exposure! In 1965, the SSMFL team was coached by former WAFL and VFL star John O’Connell and was stacked with then-current WAFL players, including Barry Cable, Phil Tierney, Mal Atwell, Mel Whinnen, Murray Leeder, Gary Scott and Fred Seinor. But the visiting team, featuring Polly Farmer, won by nine points in a high-scoring affair.

The 1975 game didn’t quite have the same profile, but the

SSMFL team included four WAFL players in Chris Mitsopoulos, Jeff Murray, Kevin Worthington and Murray Couper. Geelong won by 15 points. Regular readers of this column would probably have guessed by now that the programs for these matches would be worth quite a bit of money. And I had never seen either until Brad recently emailed me a photo of the 1975 program. To a Geelong collector, it would have to be worth $100 Anyone with the 1965 program could expect a higher price still. Finally for this week, hats off to East Perth coterie group the Lotons Club for the new East Perth player badges and magnets they have produced. The design is a nod to a set of badges that featured WAFL players like Peter Spencer, Graham Moss and Peter Bosustow back in 1984. The Lotons Club plans to release a new player badge and identical player magnet at each home game this year. They cost $6.50 each, or $10 for the pair, and those already released feature Craig Wulff, Paul Johnson, Kyle Anderson, Steven Payne and

Brendan Lee.There are also badges and

identical magnets available with slogans on them.

They can be purchased at the club’s offices and proceeds will go to the club and the

players.

8Demons launch Hall of FameChampion rovers Barry Cable and Robert Wiley were the recipients of further accolades when Perth Football Club launched its Hall of Fame in front of nearly 500 guests under a giant marquee at Lathlain Park. Guests came from interstate as well as many parts of WA to witness the induction of 35 long term administrators, champion players and coaches deemed to have made outstanding contributions to the club, which joined the league in 1899. In addition to being among the initial inductees, Cable and Wiley capped off the gala night when they were named, along with star ruckman Merv McIntosh and Jack Leckie - captain-coach of Perth’s first premiership team in 1907 - as the “Mightiest Demons”. During a glittering career, Cable played in three Perth premiership teams - winning the Simpson Medal as best afield on each occasion - won three Sandover Medals and is an AFL Legend. Wiley’s achievements include two Perth premiership teams, eight club fairest and best awards and membership of the WAFL Hall of Fame. McIntosh was the outstanding ruckman of his era, winning three Sandover Medals, seven club fairest and best awards, three Simpson

He guided Perth for 11 seasons, and also coached the State side which won the 1921 national carnival. The Harper brothers, Keith and Roy - who were outstanding players during the 1950s and were prominent in the 1955 premiership team (Keith was skipper) - were also inducted. Channel Seven’s Mark Readings acted as MC for the evening, and was assisted by his Seven colleague, Adrian Barich - who captained Perth in 1993-94 and played 160 league games - and former ABC News journalist, Peter Kennedy, who interviewed the surviving recipients. A selection committee headed by 1970 Simpson medallist Allan Stiles, had the unenviable task of selecting the inaugural members. The coveted list will be extended at regular intervals.

SOUTH FREM v EAST FREMAfter a blazing start to 2015, South Fremantle have come back to the field with consecutive losses. And it just so happens that the Bulldogs’ arch-rival has a very similar record going into the first derby of the season. Indeed, the winner takes hold of fourth spot on the ladder. Brock Higgins has been steadily improving in the ruck and he might be a key weapon in the Bulldogs’ charge. South Fremantle is getting plenty of energy from Ashton Hams, skipper Ryan Cook and Marlon Pickett but not is coming from the lesser lights of the team. Subiaco premiership player George Hampson is having a strong impact on an East Fremantle team boasting plenty of midfield talent. He is also dangerous when in attack, kicking five goals in the Sharks’ win over Swan Districts in round five. East Fremantle are also benefiting from the drive off half back provided by Cam Eardley and Brock O’Brien.

WEST PERTH v SWAN DISTRICTSTime is running out for the real West Perth to stand up. The Falcons have been far from impressive in their opening four matches with unconvincing wins over Peel and Perth. One of the interesting aspects of the West Perth campaign has been the ability of Shane Nelson (43 touches in round 4), Aaron Black, Rowan Kerr and Andrew Strijk to get their hands on the ball. But the Falcons haven’t been able to make the most of the opportunities. Michael Lourey’s 13 goals have been valuable but West Perth will need more score producers against a Swan Districts’ unit that will be determined to make up for the slow start against East Fremantle last week. Rudy Riddoch’s four goals across half forward were the stand out in the loss. The experience of Tim Geappen will be important in trying to lift the black and whites back to the winners’ list.

PEEL v CLAREMONTNo longer will Peel have sand kicked in its face. The Thunder is the form team of the WAFL and could well be a serious premiership contender. Not bad for a club that has yet to play finals. But Peel has dropped just one of four matches – a seven-point loss to West Perth in round two – and last week accounted for East Perth Suddenly the Thunder are $3.65 – in from as high as $9 – with TABTouch to win the flag. Only East Perth at $3.55 is lower. While the impact of Fremantle’s AFL contingent is important to Peel, it is the efforts of locally-based players Leroy Jetta, Gerald Ugle, Brendon Jones and Josh Bootsma that is significant in the victories. For Claremont it is a case of how the mighty have fallen. In September 2012 the Tigers celebrated another premiership. In April 2015 the club is striving to avoid the wooden spoon. The Tigers need to improve their midfield production and will rely on ruckman Mitch Andrews, Ryan Neates and Tom Ledger to lift the team at stoppages.

PERTH v EAST PERTHRecruits have settled in. The new coach’s message has started to get through. Players are starting to bond in different roles. Perth got its breakthrough win of 2015 in the previous round and becomes a tough proposition for an East Perth line-up that surprisingly sits one rung above the Demons in seventh spot. The genesis of the triumph over the Tigers was evident in Perth’s performance against Peel a week earlier. The lads from Lathlain Park were in the contest until the final siren. It has been players given a second chance at WAFL level that have fired the Demons resurrection. Brett Wolfenden (Swan Districts) has proven handy near goals, Liam McKenna (Peel) has been damaging across the middle while Aidan Tropiano (East Fremantle) must surely have put himself into consideration for State duty. Tropiano averages 33 possessions a match. East Perth has been disjointed with a regularly changing team because of AFL commitments. The lack of a key forward has been the Royals’ biggest problem.

Western Australia’s State under 15 indigenous team was crowned Kickstart Champions at Cazaly’s Stadium in Cairns after remaining undefeated throughout the tournament from April 11-15. It was the fifth consecutive year that WA has won the Championships after claiming victory every year since the event’s inception in 2011. WA player Ryan Bennell starred for the KickStart team and was voted MVP of the tournament, while Joe Hinder was also recognised with WA’s team MVP award.

WA claims 5th consecutive Kickstart Championship Bennell and Hinder were among 10 WA players selected for the All-Australian Flying Boomerangs team along with Mitch Henry, Eli Hill, Arthur Jones, Zach Merrit, Heath Ryder, Duane Smith, Sydney Stack and Durack Tucker. WA coach Shaye Hayden said he was extremely proud of the playing group for their motivation, commitment and success at the Championships. “This team was comprised of a very talented group of young men that were highly motivated and committed to the WA Kickstart program,” he said. “Given WA’s previous results, the team carried a weight of expectation, but this group of players were determined to create their own legacy and accepted all challenges. “The players were able to showcase their talent on a national stage and by playing to a very high standard were able to make their families, people and their State proud by successfully completing an undefeated championship. “The results of the WA Kickstart team over the past five years is a testament to the pathway programs that have been put in place by the WAFC, and is reward for its commitment to the talent identification and promotion of young aboriginal footballers in WA. “It was also a fabulous initiative to combine the Kickstart and All Nations tour, which directly resulted in relationship building and support, both on and off the field.” Western Australia’s All Nations team, which also competed at the Championships, was knocked out in the preliminary final by eventual winners Queensland. The MVP for the WA All Nations team was Mach Deng, who was selected along with Fred Ruremeshu, Noel Mancuveric and Sandi Mathiang for the World Team.

With the junior footy season about to begin, not only will young players be putting the boots on for the first time, but young whistle blowers will be stepping out to make the right the decisions too. This year new umpires will be wearing a ‘Trainee Vest’ to identify them as new umpires learning their trade. WAFC Umpire Development Manager Dean Margetts urged all footy stakeholders to be mindful that the umpires will make mistakes just like players throughout their development stage. “We ask that people be supportive and understanding of this, because a poor game day experience can be the difference between retaining or losing an umpire,” he said. The Trainee Vest will replace the former ‘Green Shirt’ following feedback from umpires and consultation with stakeholders that recommended a change to the Green Shirt Umpire Program that was introduced in 2005. “Learner umpires will now wear a green vest with ‘Trainee Umpire’ printed clearly on it. The vest will be worn over the league or association’s umpiring shirt and will clearly articulate to players, coaches, officials and spectators that the umpire is in the learning phase of his umpiring,” Margetts said. “All of our Districts have wonderful people in coaching and mentor roles and every umpire manager demonstrates great passion and drive to ensure that umpiring at grass roots level is competent and that the next wave of WAFL umpires coming through the system are prepared professionally.”

Integrated football soars to new heights in 2015

The WAAFL Integrated Football program, catering for players with intellectual disabilities, continues to grow with 2015 proving to be a milestone year. In a WAAFL first, a squad of 15 integrated players accompanied by seven player support members will travel to Melbourne to take part in the AFL National Inclusion Carnival held from August 5–9 this year. The AFL National Inclusion Carnival will provide a wonderful occasion for players within WAAFL Integrated Football to represent WA in a National Football Carnival featuring teams from all States and Territories. WAAFL clubs provided player nominations with the squad starting training on Sunday, April 19 at Lathlain Park, courtesy of Perth Football Club. Eighteen players took part in the grueling 90-minute session, giving it their all and demonstrating that this is an opportunity they are determined to be selected for. The players were also joined by former Perth premiership player and WAFC General Manager Pathways and Competitions Steve Hargrave who spoke to the players about the significance of State representation. With the annual Integrated Football curtain-raiser the first Integrated Football game for the 2015 year, recently-appointed head coach Jamie Wynne was able to start his State team selection process, taking notes across the four quarters. This year over 50 players across all participating clubs jumped at the opportunity to represent their clubs in the third annual integrated AFL curtain-raiser played before the West Coast and Carlton fixture. The contest was played in true WAAFL spirit, with all players excited about the chance, soaking up the chance to play their beloved game on WA’s biggest football stage. The game was further enhanced by the appearance of several AFL identities, with Ross Glendinning delivering the pre-game match address while Stephen Silvagni and Matthew Richardson took time to talk footy with all players at three quarter time.

While the squad continues to train to secure their spot in the carnival team, Integrated Football continues its season with teams based at Coolbinia West Perth, Fremantle CBC (green and gold), High Wycombe, Kingsway and Warnbro and new-comers Wembley. This year’s scores have been very even amongst the teams, highlighting the fantastic player development work being done by all teams. The Integrated ANZAC Day game will be played at Scott Reserve as High Wycombe host Wembley. With both teams keen for a win it promises to be another terrific encounter with bouncedown 4.30pm. All fixtures and further information on the Integrated Football program can be found on the website at www.waafl.com.au

WACFL Results - April 17, 18 & 19

Recruits boost manjimup Imperials

Information supplied by Trevor Kelly from WA Footy Forum

Imperials signaled it could be the team to watch this year in the Lower South West with a solid 23-point win over Bridgetown. The much-improved Imperials started the second half behind but produced a dominant second half to claim the season-opener. Magpies coach Clint Zabaznow would have been happy with recruits Arthur Bennell, Tim Malseed, Nat Fielding and Tyson Lee, while junior product Austin Styles impressed with three goals. Bridgetown’s best was Tim Fisher who bagged five majors, while Darren Tassos and Ryan Davies did well for the Bulldogs. Nine goals from last season’s leading goal kicker Lyndon Muir helped Manjimup Tigers overcome Boyup Brook by 26 points. Muir had good support from Chris Franklin and Luke Doyle, while Kane Goodwin, Mitchell Cavanagh and Michael McLeod (six goals) were best for the losers.

Can You Help?Since the beginning of the 1970 WAFL season there have been 4162 league debutants at an average of 93 new players per season. The WAFL player database is missing a date of birth for only 23 of these players but the birth place and junior/previous club is not recorded for a further 240 players. Each week the Budget will list the playing records of eight players for whom information is sought. These include:

James Dally BRENTON (Perth 1978, 2 games) Gary William DAy (Swan Districts1976-78, 18 games) Geoffrey Ian HOCKING (Claremont 1982, 18 games) Steven MURPHy (West Perth 1993, 2 games) Michael Geoffrey PEMBER (South Fremantle 1977, 1 game) Ashley UGLE (South Fremantle 2001, 3 games) Alan John vINES (East Perth 1971, 2 games) Larry James TURNLEy (Perth 1980, 5 games)

Any information that could help establish contact with, or lead to full particulars being obtained on these players would be welcomed by WAFL historian Greg Wardell-Johnson ([email protected]) or Judy Chalmers (9381 5599) at the WA Football Commission.
