AO1 – Understanding Photography

The genre of images I’ll be looking at is surreal, they’re photographs that have usually been edited in a way to present what the photographer or artist is Soralta Ban.

This photographer is famous because she is one of the only surreal photographers that ensure there is some kind of story behind each of her photos.

Photographic Category:

The photographic category for this image is surreal.

Purpose:

The main purpose for the image is to sell like every other photographer. Photographer is a job and they make money by selling their images to other magazines, websites etc. The other purpose is for the photographer to create the image that he creates in his head so other people can see it.

Image Analysis:

Framing – The picture is framed in this way so both the teddy bear and the bear is positioned in the middle. They are positioned here because they are the main focus of the image.

Lighting – The lighting for this image is from behind them, very high up. This leaves a shadow on the front of them and makes the image look a lot darker.

Narrative – This image was taken or created because it is a very ironic image; this is because there is a big, grizzly bear with an innocent teddy bear. It shows that the small, innocent children’s toy is actually based off a big, murderous animal.

Ryan Banks

Miss-en-Scene –

Meaning – The meaning for this image is to show the loveable teddy next to the animal it was actually based on, which is a big, scary animal. It is also to show irony that the grizzly bear is lying with it smaller, cute version.

Purpose:

The main purpose for the image is to sell like every other photographer. Photographer is a job and they make money by selling their images to other magazines, websites etc. The other purpose is for the photographer to create the image that he creates in his head so other people can see it.

Image Analysis:

Framing – For this image you could say there are 2 subjects, one being the red umbrella and the other being the never-ending pathway. The subject for this image is not framed in any particular way but it doesn’t need to be because the colours are used so that particular umbrella stands out. However, the image is framed so that the leading lines lead us to the vanishing point which is framed in the centre.

Lighting – Dim lighting, grey colours in the sky makes the image a gloomy, more depressing image.

Narrative – The narrative for this image would be standing out. Everyone in the crowd has a black umbrella except for one person has a red one. The pathway that everyone is walking down could suggest the path of life, go school, college,

get a job. The umbrellas are meant to symbolise people and that although everyone follows the same path, you can still stand out from the crowd.

Miss-en-Scene – The use of black and grey colours put a very gloomy feel on the on the image, the dull colours set a sad tone to the image. The amount of black umbrellas used to show that everyone is the same.

Meaning – The meaning for this image is individuality, showing that people can stand out from a crowd.
