International Conference on Arctic Ocean Acidication
Background
Te Arctic Ocean is rapidly accumulating carbon
dioxide owing to perturbations in the global
carbon cycle and particularly to increases inanthropogenic carbon concentrations. Tis is
resulting in a decline in seawater pH, so-called
ocean acidifcation.
Increasing ocean acidication and warming o
the ocean will cause changes in the ecological and
biogeochemical coupling in the Arctic Ocean,
inuencing the Arctic marine ecosystem at all
scales. Ocean acidication is expected to afect
marine ood chains and sh stocks and thus the
commercial, subsistence, and recreational sheries
in the Arctic. Tere is a need or a better under-
standing o the nature and scope o these changes
and o the resilience o the ecosystem to the
changing carbon chemistry o the Arctic Ocean.
In addition, given the importance o the ArcticOcean as a regulator o global climate, there is a
need to understand the implications o the changing
role o the Arctic on the global carbon cycle.
Tese, and related issues, will be addressed at
the International Conerence on Arctic Ocean
Acidifcation, to be held in Bergen, Norway on
6 to 8 May 2013.
Tis conerence will also eature the results o the
new publishedAMAP Arctic Ocean Acidifcation
Assessment.
