Use of natural uranium as fuel, which obviates the need for developing fuel enrichment facilities.
High neutron economy made possible by useof heavy water as moderator, which meanslow requirements of natural uranium both forinitial core as well as for subsequentrefueling. Also fissile plutonium production(required for stage 2 of the program) ishigh, compared to Light Water Reactors.
Being a pressure-tube reactor, with nohigh pressure reactor vessel, the requiredfabrication technologies were within thecapability of indigenous industry.
The technology for production of heavy water, required as moderator and coolant in PHWR, was available in the country.

US utility Xcel Energy says itscurrent fleet of nuclear powerreactors will help meet itstarget of reducing carbonemissions by 80% by 2030. Itsees advanced reactors or smallmodular reactors playing a rolein meeting its ultimate goal of
providing zero-carbon electricity by 2050. The company, which operatesin eight US states and supplies electricity to 3.6 millioncustomers, announced in December its plan to reduce carbon emissionsby 80% by 2030, compared with 2005 levels, and to deliver 100%carbon-free electricity to its customers by 2050.

Thiscompares with 67% of respondents in the previous survey carried outin 2017. Support was highest in Choczewo, where 73% of residentswere in favour. Poland's first nuclear power plant will be in operationby 2033, according to a draft energy policy document released forpublic consultation last November by the Ministry of Energy. Thedocument envisages 6-9 GWe of nuclear capacity in operation by2043, accounting for about 10% of Poland's electricity generation.
Senators from both partiesreintroduced this week theNuclear Energy Leadership Act(NELA), pushing forward effortsto boost innovation in nuclearenergy and to modernizereactors to re-establish the U.S.foothold in the nuclear energyindustry. This bipartisan bill willspur development ofdemonstration projects at theDepartment of Energy, whichcould become an importantsource of carbon free electricitygeneration.

Capacity factorNuclear
Terminology
More on Capacity factor
Lexicon
A universal standard for measuring power plantperformance, comparing a plant’s actual output with itsmaximum potential output, expressed as a percentage. Themaximum possible energy output of a given installationassumes its continuous operation at full nameplate capacityover the relevant period.Load Factor, also called Capacity Factor, for a given period, isthe ratio of the energy which the power reactor unit hasproduced over that period divided by the energy it wouldhave produced at its reference power capacity over thatperiod. Reference energy generation (net) is the energy thatcould be produced during a given time period if the unit wereoperated continuously at reference unit power. The unit loadfactor is calculated for each period as shown below:
LF (%) = (EG / REG ) x 100%Where: EG = net energy generation (MW.h) for the period ;REG = reference energy generation (net) (MW.h) for theperiod. This indicator reflects the actual energy utilization ofthe unit for electricity production.
Capacity factor compareshow much energy wasgenerated against themaximum that could havebeen produced atcontinuous full-poweroperation during a specificperiod of time.
According to the US Energy Information Administration (EIA), in 2009 the capacity factors were as follows:[
Nuclear–90.3%Coal–63.8%Natural Gas Plant–42.5%Hydroelectric–39.8%Renewables
(Wind/Solar/Biomass)–33.9%
Oil–7.8%
Nuclear power plants are atthe high end of the range ofcapacity factors, ideallyreduced only by theavailability factor, i.e.maintenance and refueling.
Source: https://pris.iaea.org , www.euronuclear.org
www.nuclearconnect.org
Load Factor Trend : World StatisticsWeighted Average per year calculated from available data ofreactors in commercial operation
A nuclear power plant with a capacity of1,000 megawatts (MW) might produce 648,000 megawatt-hours (MW·h) in a 30-day month. The number of megawatt-hours that would have been produced had the plant beenoperating at full capacity can be determined by multiplyingthe plant's maximum capacity by the number of hours in thetime period. 1,000 MW × 30 days × 24 hours/day is720,000 MW·h. The capacity factor is determined by dividingthe actual output with the maximum possible output. In thiscase, the capacity factor is 0.9 (90%).

West Australia's Gorgon natural gas project will tap naturalgas with 14% CO2. Capture and geosequestration of this isexpected to reduce the project's total emissions from 6.7 to4.0 million tonnes of CO2 per year. The project will havecapacity for up to 3.4 million tonnes per year of pressurisedsupercritical CO2 to be injected into the Dupuy formation – asaline aquifer 2500 metres deep below Barrow Island. This isat least 80%, and ultimately 95%, of the reservoirCO2 extracted. This will be the world's largest commercial-scale CO2 injection facility and the Gorgon joint venture isinvesting approximately $2 billion in the design andconstruction of it. The Australian Government has committed$60 million to the Gorgon Carbon Dioxide Injection Project aspart of the Low Emissions Technology Demonstration Fund.
Some CO2 injection to saline aquifers involves acidgas, disposing of hydrogen sulphide and CO2 separated for anatural gas stream. Chevron’s Acheson Field in Canada wasone of the first to use this acid gas injection.
Saline formations have the largest storage potential globallyand a number of CO2 storage demonstration projects areproving their effectiveness to maximise storage capacity andcontainment.

How Integrated Pest Management using NuclearTechnology helps to Boost Dragon FruitProduction in Viet Nam?
Trivia
There is a reason why dragon fruit is considered arich and famous fruit in Viet Nam: it is exported to40 countries and return from dragon fruitproduction is several times higher than from riceproduction. In Binh Thuan province, around29,500 hectares are dedicated to growing thefruit, with a production of nearly 600 000 tonneslast year, and its Department of Agriculture andRural Development plans to increase that by 2020.However, this plan may be hindered by formidablepests capable of decimating dragon fruit crops:fruit flies.
Nuclear Trivia
integrated pestmanagement:
Source: www.iaea.org, Wikipedia(See PA Newsletter-Jan2015 for more information about SIT)
The integrated pestmanagement pilot projectbegan in January2016, covering around1500 hectares of dragonfruit crops. In the firstthree-year phase, baitsprays, sanitation and amale annihilationtechnique were used toreduce fruit fly infestationin the pilot area to half ofthe infestation levels onuntreated farms. The final stage of theprogramme is beingimplemented thisyear, involving the use ofSIT for the first time in VietNam. Around one millionfruit flies are being rearedin special facilities everymonth, sterilized usingirradiation, and thenreleased into the pilotproject’s pest-infestedareas to further reduce thefruit fly population.
Unlike many other fruits that areseasonal, dragon fruit can be cultivated allyear round and each crop season lasts onlytwo and a half months, so it has greateconomic importance. The fruit is veryimportant for the province’s economy, butthe fruit flies are a big problem for this area. Therefore, the Plant Protection ResearchInstitute, along with staff from theAgriculture and Rural DevelopmentDepartment of Binh Thuan province, teamedup with the IAEA and the Food andAgriculture Organization of the UnitedNations (FAO) in a pilot project to test theeffectiveness of implementing an integratedpest management approach, including aform of insect pest control known as theSterile Insect Technique (SIT). Using thistechnique, fruit flies are mass-produced andthen sterilized using ionizing radiation beforebeing released into the environment to matewith wild flies, producing no offspring.
Integrated pestmanagement using SIToffers the possibility ofpermanently reducingor eliminating flypopulations across awide area.
