ANNUAL REPORT 2009 A Capital Campaign for our Animal Companions — for our Community January 2010 “A LAB R OF LOVE” AN EXCEPTIONAL YEAR FOR POTSDAM HUMANE SOCIETY, 2009 saw us provide services to 1,214 neglected, unwanted, or stray animals that found their way to our door, welcomed 730 loving families to the ranks of those who have adopted a pet from our shelter program, and, most importantly, completed Phase 2 of our Labor of Love Capital Campaign to renovate and expand the 50-year old Potsdam Animal Shelter. Thanks to caring animal loving friends near and far, we are excited to report that as this New Year begins, we have raised 80% of our $1,000,000 Labor of Love Capital Campaign goal! The need to upgrade the Potsdam Animal Shelter is urgent, and we are ready to get the job done. The current building is literally falling apart around us, and there is no longer an option to replace it. Building renovations and additional space has been well designed by GYMO Engineers and Architects of Watertown, who are among the best in the business when it comes to designing animal care facilities. In addition, we have developed the Board and staff capacity to manage this project and operate a larger facility. Today, our shelter program is considered to be one of the best in NYS! We cannot thank our supporters enough. Local businesses, civic organizations, the medical community, schools and universities, and hundreds of generous individuals are the reason we have been so successful in this campaign. The tremendous outpouring of support for our mission and building project was especially evident when it came to the national “Zoo Too” competition, where we placed in the top 20 nationwide, thanks to votes and support from PHS fans. Community support was also a key to our successful application for federal funding for our project through USDA, which is providing long-term financing as well as significant grant funding. Every gift to PHS, no matter the size, is treasured and appreciated, and gets us one step closer to renovating our very outdated building and to building a new adoption wing to meet the animal care needs of ten townships (and counting) in the North Country. With the help of new and continuing contributors, we are confident we will raise the final $200,000 needed to break ground this spring. To reach our goal, we are focusing on three community-wide giving challenges (see page 3), plus naming opportunities for major donors and commemorative giving options for gifts of all sizes. The campaign for a new animal shelter is a one-time funding request for a facility that will serve our region for the next 50 years — thank you for considering what you can do to help us complete our “Labor of Love” this year! With heartfelt gratitude to all of our community partners ... PHS Board of Directors and Staff HI, MY NAME IS STRAWBERRY and I work at Canton-Potsdam Hospital. It all started when I had the good fortune to be taken to the Potsdam Animal Shelter, where the director, Anne Smith, realized I had some special talents. She connected me with CPH, and they put me to work in the Rehab Unit. I get lots of attention every day, and I love seeing people get better. I’m glad to show that animals like me can enrich lives and serve the community well.

An exceptionAl yeAr for potsdAm HumAne society, 2009 saw us provide services to 1,214 neglected, unwanted, or stray animals that found their way to our door, welcomed 730 loving families to the ranks of those who have adopted a pet from our shelter program, and, most importantly, completed Phase 2 of our Labor of Love Capital Campaign to renovate and expand the 50-year old Potsdam Animal Shelter.

Thanks to caring animal loving friends near and far, we are excited to report that as this New Year begins, we have raised 80% of our $1,000,000 labor of love capital campaign goal!

The need to upgrade the Potsdam Animal Shelter is urgent, and we are ready to get the job done. The current building is literally falling apart around

us, and there is no longer an option to replace it.

With heartfelt gratitude to all of our community partners ...PHS Board of Directors and Staff

i'm eli, and this is my story.

One morning the staff at PHS found me in the exercise pen at the rear of the shelter, where I had been abandoned.

I was scared and felt awful. My fur was severely matted, and I had developed skin allergies. Every step I took hurt because my toenails had never been cut and were growing into the pads of my feet. I was treated and placed in foster care, where with a lot of reassuring, gentle handling and love, I began to get better. Fixing all my health problems cost a lot, but when Kathy from the shelter told my story on the radio, I was amazed by how many people chipped in to heal my hurts.

A month later, I began a whole new life, when a great family adopted me for their own. Being loved is so much better than being neglected. Thank you PHS and everyone who supports the shelter!

i’m JeremiAH and this is my story.

I was born to a seven-month old “teen mother” cat, who gave birth to me while in foster care arranged by PHS. While my mom and my five litter mates were adopted right away, I had to go back to the shelter for a while until one more family could be found for me. Like a lot of kids, I caught a cold and had to go into foster care again to get better. (The new shelter will have an air exchange system to prevent respiratory diseases from spreading.)

Thanks to the staff at PHS for not giving up on little ol’ me, my story has a happy ending. I not only got over my bad cold, I was finally adopted. It was worth the wait and the trouble. My world is now the best with good health and a loving forever family of my own.

Three Community-Wide Giving Challenges — Join With Others to Help PHS!

1. Medical Challenge Led by special friends from the medical community, this challenge seeks to raise $100,000 in support for a new surgical suite. (All animals are spayed or neutered prior to adoption.)

Amount raised to date — $50,000 Amount needed to break ground — $50,000

2. business Challenge Long-time local business contributors are taking on the challenge to raise $20,000 to fund the Chad Fuller Memorial Community Room. Chad Fuller, a Potsdam high school graduate, animal lover and frequent volunteer at PHS, was taken from us in August 2003 while he was serving our country in Afghanistan. This multipurpose room will provide the space to host school groups, animal care training programs and board and community meetings.

Amount raised to date — $8,000 Amount needed to break ground — $12,000

3. education Challenge Established with the support of educators, students and school groups from the PHS service area, this just-launched challenge seeks to raise $15,000 for the Al Bender Jr. Memorial Young Animal Nursery. Named in honor of another animal loving Potsdam high school student who was tragically killed in a car accident, the nursery will provide a vital, protected space for the youngest cared for at the shelter.

Amount raised to date — $2,000 Amount needed to break ground — $13,000

Individual/Group Naming Opportunities and Commemorative Gifts — Choose Your Own Way to Help!

❏ $2,500 and $5,000 Commemorative Challenges — Ideal for fundraising projects or collective gifts from a group of family members, friends or like minded folks, this program allows you to have a plaque placed in one of the new catteries or dog kennels. Each plaque will commemorate the person honored and a list of those who provided the funds.

❏ Naming Opportunities — Over 30 features of the new building are available as naming opportunities for gifts of $750 or more.

❏ Leaves of Love — Donors of $200 and $400 can permanently recognize a beloved pet or person on a new “Leaves of Love” tree-design display area.

❏ LEAF (Landscaping, Equipment and Furnishings Fund) – Donations of any amount are welcome for outfitting the building and grounds of the new building; donations of $500 to $1,500 can be targeted for specific needs, such as benches or trees, furnishings, animal care or office items.

there is so little time left until the construction season is upon us! Your new or additional gift is so important. we ask for people to give what they are comfortable giving. Collectively, small gifts add up to be HUGE!

Please help us cross the “fund Racing” finish line this spring.

THaNk YOU on behalf of the animals who count on us for care!
