In these images we find the key for living the next six weeks deeply and fruitfully, as God is hoping we will live them. The first image is that of the desert. After Jesus was baptized, but before he began his years of public ministry, St Mark tells us in today's Gospel that the Spirit "drove Jesus out into the desert," where he experienced temptation. Throughout the Bible, the desert is often referred to a place of testing, where we experience our weakness and dependence on God. Water and food are hard to come by there, and the temperatures and emptiness are oppressive to both the body and the mind. The desert is a place where our illusions of self- sufficiency and comfort fade away. When we are in the desert, either literally or figuratively, we quickly realize that we need God. In other words, the desert is the opposite of the Garden of Eden. It is the place of suffering and hardship that sin has led us to. Both original sin and also our own personal sins have interfered with God's plan for our lives and for our world; they have put us in need of salvation. The second image in today's Readings is the flood, the abundance of water that cleansed the world of sin at the time of Noah. That ancient flood of water foreshadowed Christian baptism, the flood of grace that purifies our souls from sin, bringing new spiritual life into the desert of our sin- damaged hearts. Sin and salvation: our sins, and Christ's loving sacrifice that leads to salvation. These are the most fundamental aspects of our Catholic faith, and these are the themes that should fill our hearts and minds throughout the season of Lent. It's good for us to be reminded of these simple, beautiful, basic truths. . I once read a story about a little boy who wanted to buy a pet dog. He went to the pet shop, saw five puppies for sale, and asked the shop owner how much they cost. The man replied, "Some are fifty dollars, some are more." The little boy pulled out his change, counted it, and announced that he had $1.47. The man said, "I'm sorry, but you'll just have to save your money and come back again." Just then, the man's wife brought out another puppy from the back of the store. It was smaller, had a crippled leg, and limped badly when it tried to walk. They explained that this one had been born without a hip socket and would always be lame. "I wish I had the money to buy that one!" exclaimed the little boy with excitement. "It's not for sale," said the man, "but I'll gladly give him to you for free." But the little boy refused, saying: "No, sir. That little dog is worth just as much as the others. I'll give you a dollar and forty-seven cents now, and fifty cents a month until I have paid in full." Confused, the man asked, "Why do you want a dog that will never run and play like the other puppies?" The boy reached down and rolled up his pant leg to reveal a badly twisted, crippled left leg, supported by a metal brace. He said, "Mister, I don't run and play too well myself. I think this little puppy will need someone like me who understands." That's the Catholic faith in a nutshell: Jesus become just like us, paid the full price of our sins, and offers us salvation, just because he loves us. May God Bless You, Fr. Dan

The liturgical season of Lent begins with Ash Wednesday. The following are guidelines of Lenten observance for the faithful. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of Fast and abstinence. Fasting binds all persons who have completed their 18th birthday through those who have completed their 59th year unless prevented by poor health. On days of fast, one full meal is allowed. Two other meals sufficient to maintain strength may be taken according to one’s own needs. Eating between meals is not allowed although fluids may be taken. Abstinence binds all persons who have completed their 14th birthday, unless prevented by poor health. On days of abstinence, the consumption of meat is not allowed. The Church strongly encourages the observance of Friday abstinence, but failure to so do is not regarded as sinful. Lent is a penitential season and such religious practice such as daily Mass, reception of the Sacrament of Penance, Stations of the Cross, works of charity & justice, and acts of self-denial are highly encouraged.

Day Group: Tuesday’s 10AM-12:00PM (February 6th – March 20th), Evening Group 7-9PM (February 9th – March 23rd). All meetings will be held in the ACTS House. Cost is $10 for the book.

During Catholic Schools Week, St. Jerome Junior High students were visited by State Representative Dwayne Bohac. Representative Bohac is a member of the Texas House of Representatives for District 138, which encompasses west and northwest Houston, including Spring Branch. The students enthusiastically learned more about the government, how laws are created, passed or vetoed and above all, that God is #1! Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to visit St. Jerome!

FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT That we may place our lives in God’s hands and have the strength to carry out His unique plan for each us. Do you ever think about how difficult it must have been for Jesus to come into Galilee, knowing that John had just been arrested for teaching the same message that Jesus was proclaiming? It must have taken great love and trust for Jesus to do what the Father had sent Him here on earth to do. In the same way, following a life of stewardship takes great love and trust from us. We must be willing to surrender completely to God, trusting that God will always give us all that we need to fulfill His plan for us.

LAUGH LINES: Jones came into the office an hour late for the third time in one week and found the boss waiting for him “What is the story this time, Jones?” He asked sarcastically. “Let’s hear a good excuse for a change.” Jones signed, “Everything went wrong this morning, boss. The wife decided to drive me to the station. She got ready in ten minutes, but then the drawbridge got stuck. Rather than let you down, I swam across the river (look my suit’s still damp), ran out of the river, got a ride on Mr. Thompson’s helicopter, landed of top of Radio City Music Hall, and was carried here piggy-back by one of the Rockettes.” “You’ll have to do better than that, Jones,” said the boss, obviously disappointed. “No woman can get ready in ten minutes.” Christian Clippings

________________________________________________

JOIN THE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS EVERY THURSDAY IN THE ST. JEROME DAY CHAPEL BEFORE THE BLESSED SACRAMENT PRAYING THE ROSARY FOR LIFE FROM 6:30 TO 7:00 FOLLOWED BY THE HOLY

HOUR FOR LIFE

RESPECT LIFE: More than anything else, what destroys charity is greed for money, "the root of all evil". The rejection of God and his peace soon follows; we prefer our own desolation rather than the comfort found in his word and the sacraments. All this leads to violence against anyone we think is a threat to our own "certainties": the unborn child, the elderly and infirm, the migrant, the alien among us, or our neighbor who does not live up to our expectations. - Pope Francis' Lenten Message 2018
