The Holy Family

Last Wednesday, we focused our attention on the baby Jesus. Today, the last Sunday of 2019, we focus on His Holy Family, Joseph and Mary. The first family of Genesis, of Adam and Eve, were given everything but lost it all by disobeying God’s command. They were driven out of Eden, yet loved by the One who made them in His own image. At that very moment, God promised them a Holy One who would be born into a family. That first family knew struggle and ultimately tragedy, as Cain, in a jealous rage murdered his brother Abel. The family of Abraham and Sarah, the father and mother of faith, and also in each generation that followed. We see God’s love, presence and protection in the human family. Today we are introduced to the Holy Family of Joseph and Mary. As they offer their baby Jesus in the temple. We meet Simon and Anna, a pious, faithful man and woman who recognize in the child, God’s beloved Son, the Messiah, Redeemer and Savior. He came into the family to die and to repair what Adam and Eve had lost. The Feast of the Holy Family reminds us of our family. The family is all around us and within us. We take our family with us wherever we go. We hear our parents’ instructions about right and wrong long after we have become adults. We hug a friend who is having a difficult day, because at one time someone hugged us. We can sit at a table almost anywhere and remember those special tables where we sat when all the family was together. The prayers we prayed together, the special occasions we celebrated together which became family customs. And no matter how old we get, we always carry the nicknames we gave to our siblings. These family ties are what keep us connected to our family now and forever. On the Feast of the Holy Family we gather in church grateful to God for our family, human and spiritual. We are the family of Holy Redeemer Church. Through Holy Redeemer Church we welcome Jesus in the sacraments and see Him in one another. This year we rejoice with the 47 families who received the Sacrament of Baptism. Jesus came in the Holy Eucharist for the first time to 37 children. United in love, we rejoiced with 9 couples in Holy Matrimony. The Holy Spirit came upon 33 young adults in Confirmation. We share our sadness and offer our condolences to 8 families whose loved ones passed on to eternal life. Jesus continues to welcome, to heal and to bless countless visitors who worship with us at Holy Redeemer. The church is the place where Jesus comes to us in the sacraments. In the church, we share our joy and sorrow with God, we open our heart and offer to Jesus our thanksgiving and needs. I would like to thank you for building and maintaining this warm place of worship. Thank you for your prayers and volunteering your time in various parish ministries. Thank you for your financial support. You are truly needed, appreciated and a blessing to Holy Redeemer. I would like to wish each and every one of you and your families a very Happy New Year. I pray that the peace and joy of Christ will be in your family. You and your loved ones are in my prayers.

Happy New Year Rev. Msgr. Publius Xuereb

Most people are aware of Nolt’s beautiful poem,

“Children Learn What They Live” The parents who think about those verses, pray over them, and follow their

advice would come as closely as possible to imitating that holiest of

all families, Jesus, Mary & Joseph.

If a child lives with criticism, He learn to condemn. If a child lives with hostility, He learns to fight. If a child lives with ridicule, He learns to be shy.

If a child lives with shame, He learns to feel guilty. If a child lives with tolerance, He learns to be patient.

If a child lives with encouragement, He learns confidence. If a child lives with praise, He learns to appreciate.

If a child lives with fairness, He learns justice. If a child lives with security, He learns to have faith.

If a child lives with approval, He learns to like himself. If a child lives with acceptance and friendship,

He learns to find love in the world.
