INTRODUCTION THE WORKSHOP HIGHLIGHTS
OBJECTIVE The goal of the training workshop is to develop capacity building of young scientists, researchers, post-graduate students in climate change impact assessment and adaptation strategies for wheat and groundnut production. This training will provide an opportunity to develop consortium of researchers across the country for improving management strategies for sustainable crop production under changing climate using Decision Support System.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND Agronomists, Agricultural Researchers,
Soil Scientists, Agro-meteorologists, Nutrient Management Specialists, Resource Management Specialists, Agricultural Extension Agents, Policy Makers, Economists, Planners and other Agricultural professionals striving to reduce risks in increasing agricultural productivity should attend this workshop. Participants should bring their Laptop with Windows 64 bit Operating System. Limited accommodation facility is available for participants outside the Rawalpindi/Islamabad city. No TA/DA will be paid to the participants. Female researchers /students are encouraged to participate.
From last decades, climate change already witness to happen and its impact is more vulnerable for agriculture especially under rainfed conditions due to uncertainty in rainfall pattern coupled with high temperature (Abrupt seasonal change). The uncertainty in rainfall is directly link with farming practices like sowing date, choice of cultivar and nitrogen application etc. Therefore, under these circumstances agricultural production can be hampered to attain national food security target, livelihood of small landholding farmers, adequate supply of food at reasonable price and policy implementation. Decision Support System hasdemonstrate the effect of plant genetics, agronomic management and environmental interactions on agricultural productivity. There is dire need todevelop adaptation/management strategies to reduce the impact of climate change for sustainable crop production.

Pakistan is highly vulnerable to the negative impacts of climate change. According to the climate risk index, Pakistan is the 7 most vulnerable country due to climate change. Future projections show that the temperature in Pakistan is expected to rise by 2.8°C by 2069.
th Describe a practical approach for simulating effect of soil, weather, management,
and genetic factors on crop production
Make extensive use of hands-on sessions that apply the DSSAT-CSM model to
cropping systems in various regions of the world
Describe procedures for collecting and managing crop, weather and soil data for
model calibration and evaluation
Give participants the opportunity to work with their own data and determine the
accuracy of the models for application to specific problems
Exercise: How to create Management files (X build), Soil File (S build) and
Weather files.
Analyze management alternatives for single seasons or over long-term crop rotations
Exercise: Calibration and Evaluation of model
Climate Change Impact Assessment using wheat/groundnut data.
Future Climate change scenario generation (RCPs)
Exercise: Climate Change Impact assessment using General Circulation
Models (GCMs)
Adaptation Strategies/Options for Wheat and Groundnut crop
