by Jim Stickford When historians look back at the year 2015, they will probably say it was a mixed bag for auto- mobile manufacturers. On the one hand, sales of vehi- cles in the U.S., as well as profits, reached levels not seen in years. On the other hand, 2015 was also a big year for recalls and govern- ment fines. Although the industry experi- enced record sales, a plethora of new technolgy and the advent of driverless cars, all of this was overshadowed by the Volkswa- gen scandal. By far, the leading story for 2015 was Volkswagen getting caught for deliberately cheating on emissions testings. News broke in late summer that the world’s top-selling auto- maker had cheated. VW CEO Martin Winterkorn re- signed, plans were announced to recall 11 million cars globally and set aside $7 billion to pay for them. In the United States, where more than 500,000 VW cars were recalled, several government agencies began investigating. Then there was the Takata airbag scandal. Japan’s Takata Corp. admitted concealing evi- dence for years that its air bags could explode. A defect was linked to eight deaths and more than 100 injuries worldwide. Takata agreed to pay U.S. regu- lators a $70 million fine. It also agreed to phase out air bag infla- tors that use ammonium nitrate, which was blamed for the explo- sions. In all, Takaka airbags affected millions of vehicles and 11 auto manufacturers. There were many other recalls from fuel tanks and ignition switches to headlights and brakes. The record number and swift manner for reporting to NHTSA comes on the heel of the 2014 GM Cobalt ingnition scandal that caused an overhaul in the NHTSA rules, regulations and fines. As for 2015 auto sales, Kelley Blue Book estimated on Dec. 23 that new-vehicle sales are ex- pected to increase 13 percent year-over-year to a total of 1.7 million units in December 2015, CONTINUED ON PAGE 3 The Good: Auto Sales and Profits Are Up; The Bad : Recalls, Fines; The Ugly : VW Cheats 2015: A YEAR IN REVIEW ®Detroit AutoScene® VOL. 83 NO. 52 JANUARY 4, 2016 ESTABLISHED 1933 AS NEW CENTER NEWS AND 1983 AS OAKLAND TECH NEWS View This Week’s Edition at http://DetroitAutoScene.com “FIRST IN THE HEART OF DETROIT” [email protected] Chrysler and Dodge have com- bined once again to lead all auto- makers in minivan sales in the United States and Canada. That’s no surprise to Chrysler, the inventor of the minivan. The first minivan was intro- duced in the year 1983, when Ronald Reagan was President of the United States. Lech Walesa was the Nobel Peace Prize Laure- ate. The Internet was created, and the first mobile phones were in- troduced to the public. U.S. as- tronauts completed the first space shuttle spacewalk, the Bal- timore Orioles won the World Se- ries – and Chrysler hit a home run with the introduction of the first minivan. While the minivan was intro- duced in 1983, it got its start in 1977, said Fiat Chrysler spokesman Jiyan Cadiz. In the late 1970s, U.S. “baby boomers” were starting families in large numbers and were looking for an economical alternative to auto- motive transportation. Traditional sedans and wagons continued to get smaller due to pollution and fuel economy con- cerns, and full-sized vans were being customized as passenger vehicles – but the combination of poor ride comfort, large size and rear-wheel-drive design did not make them ideal for family haul- ing, Cadiz said. Chrysler designers and engi- neers understood the shortcom- ings of the full-sized van and be- gan early development studies on a vehicle that would fulfill the needs of new families. Chrysler pinpointed a poten- tial vehicle market that needed to deliver a few simple premises: fuel-efficient, easy to step into, family-friendly and smaller than the Dodge Ram Van. Ford Motor Company employ- ees this year delivered 6,000 new inventions, – an increase of 36 percent from 2014. Ford Smart Mobility and other initiatives continue to accelerate the pace of innovation, said Ford spokesman Karl Henkel. Many of the new patents have been related to autonomous and connected vehicles, wearable de- vices, eBikes, navigation, ride- sharing platforms and other technologies, said Henkel. These patents include tech- nologies to help autonomous ve- hicles detect other vehicles at obstructed intersections, as well as technologies to alleviate range anxiety in electrified vehicles and to extend range in real-world driving. Another new invention is de- signed for cyclists – allowing rid- ers to report road obstacles to help other riders. “Our engineers and scientists are inventing ways to address mobility challenges more than ever – with more patent applica- tions filed this year on car-shar- ing, wearables, bikes, cloud com- puting and in other areas to im- prove consumers’ lives inside and outside the car,” said Raj Nair, Ford executive vice presi- dent and chief technical officer. “By hosting – and participating in – more internal hackathons and innovation labs, our employ- ees are stepping up to show that inventing is a priority for leader- ship in the industry.” Nair said as part of Ford Smart Mobility – the company’s plan to use innovation to ascend to the next level in connectivity, mobili- ty, autonomous vehicles, the cus- tomer experience, and data and analytics – 2015’s record-break- ing output of inventions features thousands of technologies that enable key advancements in con- nectivity, analytics, wearables, electrification and safety. For example, a new bike sys- tem can detect bike lanes and alert cyclists of path deviations. Another one would suggest a safe vehicle speed based on nearby infrastructure, average vehicle speed and GPS data, and a new front brake light technolo- gy would improve vehicle-to- vehicle and autonomous driving- to-pedestrian communication. “The commitment Ford has made to innovation is commend- able,” said James Malackowski, chairman and CEO, Ocean Tomo, an intellectual property firm. “The strength of Ford's patent portfolio has resulted in the com- pany being named a constituent to the Ocean Tomo 300 Patent In- dex for five years.” Ocean Tomo annually releases its 300 Patent Index, which is based on the value of a compa- ny’s intellectual property. Hundreds of Ford employees all over the world are responsible for this achievement, Henkel said. In the past three years, Ford employees in Asia Pacific in- creased invention disclosure submissions more than 140 per- cent, North America is up almost 100 percent and Europe saw an increase of more than 50 percent. NAIAS Auction to Benefit Dealer Charity Arm

NEW YORK (AP) – FiatChrysler Automobiles is recall-ing nearly 450,000 SUVs world-wide in two separate recalls thatinclude the Jeep Grand Chero-kee.The automaker said Dec. 24

about 353,000 Jeep Grand Chero-kee and Dodge Durango SUVswith model years 2011-12 are be-ing recalled because wiring inthe vanity mirror may overheatand create a fire hazard. No in-juries or accidents were report-ed.The second recall is for more

than 93,000 Jeep Compass andPatriot SUVs with model year2015.The company says it will in-

spect and fix a clamp that maybe out of position. The out-of-position clamp may

allow power steering fluid toleak, creating a possible fire haz-ard. The automaker says no in-juries or accidents were report-ed.

resulting in an estimated 18 mil-lion seasonally adjusted annualrate (SAAR).Kelley Blue Book also said De-

cember will cap the biggest yearof U.S. new-car sales that the in-dustry has ever seen, with totallight vehicle sales of roughly 17.5million, representing a 6.1 per-cent jump from 2014 totals. Theprevious high was 17.35 millionunits in 2000.“December has become one of

the biggest sales months of theyear, helped by year-end targetsand prominent holiday salesevents,” said Tim Fleming, ana-lyst for Kelley Blue Book. “As wemove into the new year, expectthis strength to continue, al-though at a slower rate than thisyear.“In 2016, Kelley Blue Book fore-

casts sales in the range of 17.5million to 18 million units, whichwould represent another record-breaking year.”As for profits, full-year results

aren’t in yet. But GM’s third quar-ter was strong. Profits fell slight-ly, but the company rode strongNorth American sales to over-come $1.5 billion in costs from itsdeadly ignition switch recall.Meanwhile, Ford’s gamble on

trucks has paid off. Pickup trucksdrove the Dearborn automakerto record North American num-bers in the third quarter, and thecompany expects the trend tocontinue for a while, said Fordsales analyst Erich Merkle.Ford earned $2.7 billion in

North America, up 89 percentfrom a year ago, largely due tohigher sales of its new F-150 pick-up truck. Ford debuted the alu-minum-sided truck in the fall of

2014, but didn’t hit full produc-tion at its two U.S. facilities untilJune. “What really stood outwere the F-Series,” said Merkle.“Trucks really stole the show.”Sales of F-Series pickups hit a

nine-year high in the third quar-ter.On the other hand, Fiat

Chrysler was unable to escaperecall costs. Net income for FiatChrysler’s U.S. operations fell 89percent in the third quarter asthe automaker set aside millionsof dollars to pay for future safetyrecalls. The Auburn Hills company re-

ported its net profit was $70 mil-lion in the third quarter com-

pared with $611 million last year.Fiat Chrysler US posted a little

more than $1 billion in one-timepretax charges. That included an

$848 million adjustment for re-calls, along with $159 million forvehicles damaged in a Chineseport explosion last August.

After numerous concepts andproposals, Chrysler productplanners unanimously agreed ona platform theme that utilized aflat-load floor with the entirepowertrain in front of the pas-senger compartment, Cadiz said.

Utilizing a front-engine, front-wheel-drive chassis design,Chrysler engineers created aplatform with chair-high com-mand-of-the-road seating thatprovided easy entry and exit.

A rear-wheel-drive chassis de-sign would have required a tallerfloor design, or a center-raisedtunnel traveling the length of thevehicle to provide drivetrainclearance.

Chrysler engineers also deter-mined that a rear-wheel-drive de-sign would require owners toclimb up into the vehicle, ratherthan conveniently step into it.

Fiat Chrysler took that her-itage into 2015, which got off toa slow start for the company, said Fiat Chrysler spokesman EdCardenas. But as the year pro-gressed, both brands regainedtheir sales momentum.

More than 167,000 Chryslerand Dodge minivans have beensold in the United States thisyear, Cardenas said, whichmakes them the best-sellingbrands in the segment. Thebrands have combined to sellmore than 51,000 Dodge GrandCaravans and Chrysler Town &Country minivans in Canada thisyear as well.

Traveling to the grocery store, sporting events and family vaca-tions changed forever withChrysler’s minivans, which havehad 78 segment innovations in-cluding Stow ‘n Go seating, pow-er liftgate and dual power-slidingdoors.

These features are among theamenities that have contributedto the sale of more than 14 mil-lion minivans since 1983.

While Fiat Chrysler continuesto lead in the segment, the com-pany is not in cruise control withthe minivan.

The Windsor Assembly Plantwas shut down for 14 weeks inearly 2015 for $2 billion worth ofretooling, new equipment andtraining for the next-generationminivan.

and spares human test driversfrom such physically demandingtasks as driving over curbs andthrough potholes to prove vehi-cle durability.

Patent leadership continueson efficient powertrain tech-nologies, Henkel said. Ford has in-creased filing of electrificationpatents nearly 200 percent in thepast five years.

In 2014, Ford filed for morethan 400 patents dedicated toelectrified vehicle technologies.

Prior patents on technologythat benefits consumers includeFord’s EcoBoost engine lineup, which offers a combination offuel efficiency and power tomeet a wide range of driverneeds, Henkel said.

Ford has 275 U.S. patents onEcoBoost, with another 200pending. Ford has more U.S.patents on gasoline tur-bocharged direct-injection –EcoBoost – technology than anyother automaker today, Henkelsaid.

Inventing is an important partof Ford DNA, Nair said, pointingout that Henry Ford earned morethan 150 patents for his inven-tions.

The 10 best engines in the in-dustry are honored every yearby WardsAuto editors. The publication released in De-

cember its list for model year2016, and the winners representa broad spectrum of the industry. The 3.6L DOHC V6 (Chevrolet Ca-maro/Cadillac ATS), the 2016Chevrolet Volt propulsion systemand 3.0L Turbodiesel DOHC V6(Ram 1500 EcoDiesel) engineswere written about in a previousissue of this newspaper.Other winners included:• 5.2L DOHC V8 (Ford Shelby

GT350 Mustang);• 3.0L Turbocharged DOHC I-6

(BMW 340i);• 2.0L DOHC 4-cyl./50-kW

Drive Motor (Hyundai SonataPHEV);• 3.5L DOHC V-6 (Nissan Maxi-

ma);• 2.0L Turbocharged DOHC 4-

cyl. Boxer (Subaru WRX);• 1.8L DOHC 4-cyl./53-kW

Drive Motor (Toyota Prius HEV);• 2.0L Turbo/Supercharged

DOHC 4-cyl. (Volvo XC90).WardsAuto editors really liked

the Ford Shelby 5.2L DOHC V8engine. They wrote, “Ford has notrouble muscling its way ontothis year’s list with a 526-hp natu-rally aspirated 5.2L bruiser of aV8 in the new Shelby GT350 Mus-tang.“With its heralded flat-plane

crankshaft and weight-reducingPlasma Transfer Wire Arc cylin-der coating, Ford’s “Voodoo” V8casts a spell on WardsAuto edi-tors by demonstrating that a red-line of 8,250 rpm is not some-thing to fear but embrace.“Derived from the 5.0L ‘Coyote’

V8 that won WardsAuto 10 BestEngines trophies in 2011 and2012, the 5.2L, with old-schoolport fuel injection, 6-speed manu-al transmission and using premi-um fuel, reaches the 100 hp/Lthreshold, which is extremely dif-ficult for a big engine withoutforced induction.“Truly suited for hammering

around the track, the GT350’s en-gine is described as ‘positivelydemonic’ by a Mustang loyalistintoxicated by the brash exhaustnote and subtle but soothingshimmy at idle.“The Voodoo engine does

everything well, from putteringaround town to frightening smallanimals. WardsAuto editors con-sider it the pinnacle of internal-combustion engineering.”Editors noted that BMW re-

mains “the most-honored auto-maker, with 32 WardsAuto 10 BestEngines trophies since the com-petition began in 1995. The latestcomes for the new B58 3.0L tur-bocharged inline-6 that resides inthe 340i sedan and is destined fornumerous BMW applications inyears to come.“The 320-hp B58 replaces the

N55 turbo 3.0L, which earnedthree trophies from 2011 to 2013.With a larger twin-scroll tur-bocharger, higher compressionratio and the impeccable balanceafforded by an inline layout,BMW proves once again an en-gine need not make outrageoushorsepower or torque numbersto be enormously rewarding andthrilling to drive.“The 340i loves to stretch its

legs in the upper reaches of thepowerband, which didn’t stop anumber of editors from topping25 mpg during our evaluations.“The B58 springs from a new

modular architecture that beginswith the 6-cyl., then lops off pis-tons to make 3- and 4-cyl. vari-ants. Those B38 and B48 engines, evaluated in Mini Hardtops inthis year’s competition, also im-pressed the editors, but not quitelike the BMW 340i.”Editors called the Hyundai

Sonata plug-in hybrid “remark-able.” It employs an “excellent2.0L 4-cyl. paired with a 67-hpelectric motor, which draws en-ergy from a 68-kW lithium-poly-mer battery.

“Plug in the Sonata and bankon at least 27 miles of electricrange before the direct-injection2.0L starts the heavy lifting.Charging takes 2.7 hours with240V or nine hours with a 120Vwall socket.“But plan to be pleasantly sur-

prised, like one editor was, whena 30-mile commute with a full bat-tery ends with 8 miles of electricrange still in the battery. Thankthe software that allows for ag-gressive regeneration while de-celerating and braking.“In real-world situations that

included a mix of gasoline andelectric driving, WardsAuto edi-tors achieved fuel economy be-tween 41 and 80 mpg. But it’s notjust about saving fuel. The high-compression 154-hp 2.0L is thesoul of this hybrid and makes itenormously fulfilling and smoothto drive. And don’t forget the$4,500 in various federal tax cred-its.”

WardsAuto editors said thatNissan has always been a strongperformer when it comes to en-gines. The company collected its17th Wards Auto 10 Best Enginestrophy and the 15th for its 3.5LV6 that comes from its vauntedVQ engine family. The VQ, in displacements rang-

ing from 3.0L to 3.7L, won 14straight trophies between 1995and 2008.“This year, it returns with a sig-

nificant overhaul in time for itslaunch in the all-new Maximasedan, carrying over the alu-minum block, port fuel injection, compression ratio and bore andstroke.“But 61 percent of the new

VQ’s parts have been redesignedto reduce friction and weight andpromote better breathing. Thenew heads, intake ports and in-termediate locking valve timingmake for more complete combus-tion, and a new intake manifoldwith wider and shorter runnersimproves airflow.“Like the 3.0L that dazzled us

in the Maxima in 1995, the im-proved VQ makes for light, livelyand refined power delivery, andthe sterling midrange torque isstill there. And we can’t recallever getting 30 mpg from this en-gine long ago.”Editors said that Subaru was a

returner to the list with anotherwinner – its 2.0L turbocharged4-cyl. boxer that turns the Sub-aru WRX into a riotous week-end racer or a docile suburbancruiser.Editors wrote, “producing 268

hp and 258 lb.-ft. of torque, thisdirect-injection “FA” boxer hasbecome the poster child for high-output, affordable turbocharged4s. Last year, it managed to floatto the top of our list among a seaof 15 4-cyl. turbos, many of themquite good.

“This year, there were eight 4-cyl. turbos, and the WRX capital-ized on that mathematical advan-tage with its low weight, twin-scroll turbocharger and palat-able $28,895 base price, with Pre-mium trim.“The FA boxer makes the WRX

fast, fun and spirited, while beingperfectly suitable for daily driv-ing. This is a great engine thatcompletes the package: a reason-ably priced practical sports carwith a rally racing heritage.”Editors also praised Toyota’s

fourth-generation Prius engine. They wrote that “with an all-new95-hp 1.8L 4-cyl. paired with twoelectric motors pumping another53 kW of juice from batteriesstored in the rear, the new Priusdelivers seamless accelerationand real-world fuel economy dur-ing our evaluations of up to 61mpg.“There’s a lot of new technolo-

gy onboard, such as the cooledexhaust-gas recirculation usedfor the first time on a Prius to im-prove fuel economy and emis-sions. It’s quieter and silkier thanthe old Prius, and a ‘Power’ but-ton provides a noticeable kick onfreeway entrance ramps.“With an attractive as-tested

price of $24,700, the Prius is theleast-expensive vehicle on ourlist, while selling at the highestvolume.”Volvo also received praise

from the WardsAuto editors forthe company’s consistency.Editors wrote that last January,

Volvo’s Michael Fleiss collected atrophy for the 2.0L T5 tur-bocharged 4-cyl. in the S60 sedanand told a Wards Auto editor hewould be back in January 2016when the more powerful 2.0L T6engine wins an award as well. Itwas a gutsy statement. And onethat Volvo was able to make goodon.“But a year later, after our edi-

tors have driven the new XC90and routinely got better than 24miles per gallon in a big 7-passen-ger CUV with all-wheel drive, theWardsAuto staff now is equallyenthusiastic about this all-alu-minum engine rated at 316 hpand 295 lb.-ft. of torque.”Editors also liked the way that

only four pumping pistons pro-vided the power necessary to ef-fortlessly drive this 3-row people-mover. This results in the XC90“having the composure, powerand refinement of a high-featureV6. The T6 arguably is the newbenchmark for high-output 4-cyl.engines.”This, editors wrote, sets this

direct-injection powerplant apartfrom other small engines employ-ing forced induction in the pair-ing of supercharging to provideimmediate punch with tur-bocharging to carry on at higherrpm.
