Grace Lutheran Church A worshipping community of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America
www.GraceLutheranChesapeake.org
September 2017 “Grace Greetings”
Mission Statement:
We are a community of believers in Christ called to be servants to all people.
From the Pastor: Paul’s Letter to the Romans For most the summer now, our Epistle reading in Sunday worship has come from Paul’s
Letter to the Romans. Martin Luther once said “[Romans] is truly the most important piece
in the New Testament. It is purest Gospel.” He concludes his Preface to Romans by saying:
We find in this letter, then, the richest possible teaching about what a Christian
should know: the meaning of law, Gospel, sin, punishment, grace, faith, justice,
Christ, God, good works, love, hope and the cross. We learn how we are to act
toward everyone, toward the virtuous and sinful, toward the strong and the
weak, friend and foe, and toward ourselves. Paul bases everything firmly on
Scripture and proves his points with examples from his own experience and from
the Prophets, so that nothing more could be desired. Therefore it seems that St.
Paul, in writing this letter, wanted to compose a summary of the whole of
Christian and evangelical teaching which would also be an introduction to the
whole Old Testament. Without doubt, whoever takes this letter to heart possesses
the light and power of the
Old Testament. Therefore
each and every Christian
should make this letter the
habitual and constant
object of his study. God
grant us his grace to do
so. Amen.
During the first three Sundays in
September will conclude our
reading through of Romans for
this lectionary cycle, but let us
continue to read and reflect on
this bit of “purest gospel.”
To help you do so, here are
some comic strips by Pastor
James Wetzstein (University
Pastor at Valparaiso University)
based on the three passages
from Romans we will read in
September.
God Bless,
Pastor Leslie

From the Council Our program year starts in a few days with Rally Day
& “God’s Work, Our Hands” Day of Service on September
10th! I hope to see everyone at our combined worship
service at 10am, followed by a service project and great
fellowship over a meal. Then we can look forward to
another combined worship service on November 12th
followed by our Annual Meeting.
If the Annual Meeting is coming up, then you know
your Council is busy getting ready. Efforts to form the budget for the coming year have
started—please contact me if you’re interested in helping with the budget process.
We’ve approved the purchase of an additional 55 hymnals for our Sanctuary and 10
extra-large print Bibles for the Fellowship Hall paid for from the Memorial Fund.
The Landscape Focus Group continues their great work as we move forward with
refreshing the grounds—please contact Gary Galles if you’d like to participate in the
landscaping project.
And Christian Education has identified teachers for the coming year, though I need
an adult volunteer to hang out with me and the Middle School & High School youth during
the Sunday School hour—please contact me if you’re interested.
We’re also looking for additional volunteers to visit some of our members at home—
those who are sick, injured, or cannot get out as easily as they once did. We have
dedicated volunteers who do this ministry, but we need a few more hands to help with the
effort. This is a very rewarding and important ministry area if you have the time to help.
We also need volunteers for the nursery on Sunday mornings. Michaela Wooldridge
has been warmly welcomed as our nursery attendant, but she needs a second volunteer to
be with her to help out with the little ones. Please sign up in the Narthex if you’re interested.
And we’re very excited as our Grace Lutheran Day School starts their new school
year on September 6th with their new director, Mihaela Guy, opening the next chapter in
what has been a great partnership.
As you can see, our congregational life is full and busy. There are many opportunities
to serve our community in response to our Lord’s saving grace and love!
May the peace of Christ be with you always!
Rich Fraenkel
Stewardship Snip-it As summer begins to wind down and we move into fall activities, do not forget about
Grace Lutheran’s Flea Market on October 7, 2017. Your donations are greatly appreciated.
While you are looking for those white elephants to donate, and cleaning out your attics,
garages and storage units don’t forget that a couple of weeks after the Flea Market on
October 21, 2017 at Greenbrier Mall from 9am to Noon, is a Chesapeake Recycles Day
Event. If your more ambitious and have your recyclables ready in September, there is an
event on September 9th from 9am to Noon at the Sam's Club in Western Branch, 2444
Chesapeake Square Ring Rd. You can bring your old electronics, sensitive documents, and
household hazardous waste to be recycled. Remember they will not accept tires or tube
TVs. For more details visit www.cityofchesapeake.net/Government/City-Departments/
Departments/Public-Works-Department/wastemanagement-recycling/chesapeake-
recycles-day.htm. Help future generations take care of God’s creations.

From the Preschool: As September draws near, I am
getting more and more excited at the
thought of the school year starting. This year
we managed to implement some great
changes: we obtained approval to enroll
children who are 2 years old not 2 ½ , we
introduced computers into the curriculum
and we also introduced Spanish as a
foreign language.
You may be asking yourselves why
we should introduce a foreign language in
a preschool? Are we pushing our children
too much? According to studies at the
Cornell Language Acquisition Lab (CLAL),
children who learn a second language can
maintain attention despite outside stimuli
better than children who know only one
language. In addition, bilingual children
have been shown to have better critical
thinking skills, problem solving skills, and
greater mental flexibility. They also develop
cognitive abilities at a younger age. These
cognitive advantages can contribute to a
child’s future academic success.
So, are there any reasons not to
teach our children a foreign language?
None at all! Happy learning to our
wonderful preschoolers!!!
Mihaela Guy, Director
Labels/Box Tops for Education
• The “Labels for Education” program is
ending this fall, so please turn any labels
in by Sunday, September 10th.
• The Preschool does not qualify to benefit
from the “Box Tops for Education”
program since they do not have a
Kindergarten program. Therefore, we will
also not collect those after Sunday,
September 10th. Please find a local
school child or teacher to pass them
along to.
September is Hunger Action Month
Wear orange to show your support for
our Food Pantry!
Food Pantry Fill In Volunteers Needed We are looking for a few volunteers to be on
call and fill in as needed in the Food Pantry
when we are short staffed. Training will be
provided. See Nita Urps between services or
call her [724-2061].
Memorial Gifts: ELWs & Bibles 55 ELW Hymnals and 10 XL Print Bibles were
purchased for the Sanctuary and Fellowship
Hall with contributions to the Memorial Fund
to the glory of God in memory of the Saints
of Grace, especially Marlys Braa, Barbara
Fuhrmann, Chuck Graham Sr, Jim Lunde,
Kim McCullough, Arlene McCullough, Julia
Peterson, and Ted Peterson.
