“I Hope You Know”

When Peter, James, and John witnessed the transfiguration of Christ, they witnessed a complete change that occurred in Christ. They witnessed His earthly body change into the glory of a heavenly body. As a result of this change, we know that eventually the three followers of Christ saw Jesus only (Matt 17:8). Paul wrote to the church in Rome and instructed them to make a change of the same magnitude. Paul even used the same word that described Christ’s transfiguration (Rom 12:2). Paul said for the Christian to make a change from being of the world in life and mind, to being of God in this world. This is accomplished through the renewal of the mind through the word of God. Romans 12:1, our bodies should be presented as living sacrifices before God. Paul was giving the instruction for the child of God to do what was only reasonable, which is to surrender their life to God’s service. In fact Paul said it was the Christians “reasonable” or “rationale” service. When we stop to consider our life being lived according to the will of God, it

just makes good sense considering what God has sacrificed for us to be saved. Under the Law of Moses, an annual sacrifice was made to make atonement for sin (Lev 16:34). The law required the sinner to be reminded of sin year by year. The sacrifices under the Old Law pointed forward to the promise of a new covenant. When we consider the sacrifice of our life being lived for Christ, what are we pointing to? If the life of the Christian is sacrificed day after day for the cause of Christ, we cannot avoid pointing back to the cross, and the blessed gift given by our heavenly Father. As a result, Paul calls this sacrifice a “reasonable service” which every Christian should perform.

In Christ we saw a change from a physical glory to a celestial glory. In the Christian the change should be internal, but be seen in the life that is lived and the actions committed. We should make a change, which aligns our life with the glory of our Savior Jesus Christ. The change takes place when we choose what will guide our lives and who will rule our lives. Proverbs 16:32 calls the one who can rule his mind, or spirit mightier than one who may conquer an entire city. The Christian who is easily swayed by those who are weak in faith, needs to realize the danger of failing to make the proper sacrifice for Christ. Do not allow your life to be ruled by the weak of faith of this world. Choose to have God’s word guide you and not those who do not give regard to God’s word as being sufficient enough as a guide. It is our prayer you make your life a living sacrifice to God. Study His word to better understand your role as a living sacrifice. If you have not died to sin through baptism into Jesus, you are not able to be a living sacrifice, still having fellowship with sin. I hope you know, now is the time to take the necessary steps to become a living sacrifice for God.

Welcome back to Griffin Elkins who

will be Interning with the Centerville congregation again this

year. Griffin is the son of Mike &

Regina Elkins and will be a Junior Youth Ministry Major at Freed-

Hardeman University. Griffin will be teaching classes, helping with

Vacation Bible School as well as all

weeks of Summer Camp. He will also be in the office and helping out

in so many ways in the transition with Carter Hoover beginning in

June. We are so thankful to have Griffin on staff and look forward to the influence and blessings he will be to

our youth ministry this Summer.

Congratulations to Glenda Dorton on her retirement from the Centerville Church of Christ Day School. Mrs. Glenda served as an assistant for 28 years. We deeply appreciate her service and dedication. Marie Bates 1939-2018

Our hearts were saddened to learn of the death of Marie Bates. Marie and her husband Dean have been members of the Centerville Church of Christ for a number of years. Marie enjoyed volunteering at the Outreach Center where she assisted with the mailing of the Messenger and helped with the preparation of many meals for grieving families. Dean and Marie would have celebrated their 60th Anniversary on May

20, 2018. To her husband Dean, daughter Mal ina (Michael) Taylor, son Daniel (Haley), sisters Louise Rogers, Evelyn Winters, Henrietta (Mike) Rochelle, Marcella Breece, Becky Carroll, all grandchildren, family and friends we extend our deepest sympathy.
