ILLINOIS IRISARIAN 5 SPRING 2018
As I write this letter, we have just experienced more snow
here in central Illinois. Yes, the ground hog saw its shadow
so we’re in for another six weeks of winter! After that, here
comes spring! That’s our anticipation every year. In the
meantime we are planning for our upcoming activities.
Here are some of the events that our members will be par-
ticipating in (or have participated in) for our region just to
mention a few:
Herb and Garden Show, Time Square Mall, Mt Vernon, IL (February 10, 2018)
Russell Allen Garden Day at Lincoln College, Lincoln IL (March 10, 2018)
4-H Clover Clinic, Illinois Central College, East Peoria, IL (February 17,
2018)
Chicago Flower and Garden Show, Navy Pier, Chicago, IL (March 14 through
March 18, 2018)
The American Iris Society & the Society for Louisiana National Convention,
New Orleans, LA (April 8 through 14, 2018)
Several of our members are also U of I Master Gardeners. They represent our iris
societies in their many activities. It is always exciting to see our members, repre-
senting the American Iris Society, participating in these community and state ac-
tivities.
I’d like to remind you of our Illinois Region 9, Spring Fling Meeting in Pekin
on April 28. See page 6.
Make plans to attend some of the Iris Shows in our region. See page 7.
Visit the In-garden Judges Training of Steve Poole’s Louisiana seedlings with
Hooker Nichols as judge and speaker. See page 7.
Our Fall meeting will have an iris speaker TBA (Page 8) as well as Northern Illi-
nois Iris Society will have speaker TBA for their fall meeting.
Have a wonderful growing season. Hope to see you at one of the above events!

ILLINOIS IRISARIAN 10 SPRING 2018
My Favorite Iris
By Anita Kassly Stephens
Our garden in Southern Illinois consists of six 100 foot rows, running north to south, of
iris introductions of many different hybridizers over the years. Today, most of the
irises are introductions by Keith Keppel.
The iris tolerate hot Midwestern sun most of the day in the summer months and are ex-
posed to a wide and wildly swinging variety of weather circumstances all year long,
like many other parts of the country. Hail and high winds whip across the open field
banking the iris rows blowing predominantly from the west. One year (April 2012) a
storm, with hailstones as large as golf balls, decapitated many of the blooms right from
the stalks. Then there are the extremely cold winters and falls (September 2012) so wet
that newly planted rhizomes rot out in the field. So, it goes without saying, only the
best of the best really make it to come back another day.
This is why Keith Keppel irises have come to be my favorite irises to grow. The resil-
ience and adaptability to our extremes in weather and their tolerance to the force of
high winds in our garden setting have demonstrated to me that these particular intro-
ductions have been tested and time-honored before being set before the public eye not
only for a year or two, but sometimes over many years. They have been scrutinized
and stand up to what Mother Na-
ture doles out. Yet, the blooms
are beautiful and totally unique
in color and form, all demon-
strating great substance and gar-
den presence.
‘Strawberry Shake’ was intro-
duced by Keith in 2012. It is 36
inches and blooms midseason. It
has been a good grower in our
garden increasing steadily over
time. Luscious and ruffly, a
creamy strawberry pink self with
pink beards. It is truly lovely to
look at; so very feminine with all
petals laced and shirred—and as
with all Keppel’s, great sub-
stance. It is a very good grower!

An early to mid-season bloomer,
‘Cotillion Gown’ (2013) is a 35
inch lovely ruffled and waved soft
lemon toned self. It is a cross of
two Barry Blyth introductions,
Juicy Rumours x Are We In Love.
At the haft, there is a lovely apricot
glow that has delicate brownish
rose penciling flowing half-way
down the falls. The beards are
grenadine red.
Arresting in a mature clump at
peak bloom ‘Uptown Lady’ (2010)
has to be my current favorite Keith
Keppel. It is 33 inches. It is late to
very late. It has so much show po-
tential. Ruffled, with falls pleated
near the hafts, ’Uptown Lady’ has
clear lavender blue standards which
deepen toward the base. Lavender
blue falls are lightened with a silver
sheen toward the center. Pale blue to
blue whit beards merge visually with the
underlying petals. This gives it a beauti-
ful serene effect. It is one of the last
irises to open.
It is best for me to follow Keith’s de-
scription of the irises that follow. They
have been very good increasers in our
garden since we acquired them and have
formed good clumps.
‘Boston Cream’ (2014) is 31 inches and
early. It is a frothy warm white glaciate
with a touch of apricot on the hafts and
white beards tipped flame orange. It is
heavily ruffled with plentiful buds. It is
a good increaser in our garden.

’Fancy Ideas” (2013) is a mid season 35
inch Tall Bearded. It another beautiful
luminata introduction,. Montmartre is its
pollen parent. This luminata has mauve
standards edged lemon yellow with rich
prunella to Canterbury purple falls,
slightly blue in center. Yellow hafts ac-
centuate the cream-colored cadmium yel-
low in beards. Standards are upright and
slightly touching with a semi-flared and
ruffled form.
‘Wisecrack’ (2013) is a mid season 27
inch Border Bearded. It was startling
when I first came upon it blooming in the
garden because the color was so crisp and
arresting! I has blended golden buff to
light orient pink standards, waved and
touching; waved falls; and shirred shoul-
der pleats. A variation of the buff color
covers the hafts, then pales and blends
with violet on the lower half, ending with
plumbago grey shading on the edge.
Prominent dark orange red beards make it
a real zinger!
‘Solar Gain’ (2009) is a 24 inch early to
mid-season Intermediate Bearded. It is an
intense dark gold glacieta and is very
bright in the garden. ’Solar Gain’ is petite
and a great grower.
‘Rivulet’ (2012) is a seven inch Miniature
Dwarf Bearded. It is a dainty clear light
blue self with white beards. All petal
edges are ruffled and mini-pleated. It has
beautiful form with most stems carrying
three buds. It rebloomed for us in October
2016.
