“It is Ours”

Gospel Luke 2:22-40When the day came for them to bepurified as laid down by the Law ofMoses, the parents of Jesus tookhim up to Jerusalem to present himto the Lord - observing whatstands written in the Law of theLord: Every first-born male mustbe consecrated to the Lord - andalso to offer in sacrifice, inaccordance with what is said in theLaw of the Lord, a pair ofturtledoves or two young pigeons.

Now in Jerusalem there was a mannamed Simeon. He was an upright and devout man; he looked forwardto Israel's comforting and the Holy Spirit rested on him. It had beenrevealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death until hehad set eyes on the Christ of the Lord. As the child's father and mother stood there wondering at the things thatwere being said about him, Simeon blessed them and said to Mary hismother, 'You see this child: he is destined for the fall and for the rising ofmany in Israel, destined to be a sign that is rejected - and a sword willpierce your own soul too - so that the secret thoughts of many may belaid bare.'

Reflection by Father James McCarthyToday we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family, and indoing so, the Church encourages us to look to Jesus, Maryand Joseph for inspiration, example and encouragement inour daily lives. Christmas, and the days following the Lord’sbirth are important moments for the family. Families cometogether to celebrate and renew our relationship with eachother and with God.

Today’s feast has a message for all of us, and the message is that we need toinvest more of our time in our family and in our relationship with God. OurGospel is the story of the presentation of Jesus in the Temple, which tells thestory of Mary and Joseph faithfully observing the requirements of Jewish lawby presenting Jesus in the Temple in Jerusalem. Family unity in religiousworship and ritual were important at the time of Christ, and are equallyimportant for families today.

Life must be about more than work and about even more than ourselves. Aswe finish 2017 and begin 2018, we can take Mary and Joseph as the modelfamily. In the Holy Family, both parents placed their family and theirrelationship with God before themselves. They placed the family’sfaithfulness to God before their work, finances, and before their ownindividual happiness. Mary and Joseph left Nazareth and then left Bethlehemto seek safety for their family in Egypt. Joseph was a carpenter and a builder, and probably had his own construction company in Nazareth before Jesuswas born, but he walked away from it all for a love for God, for Mary and forJesus.

The family is the place we first learn to understand and live in our world. When children or even adults see personal interest or career as moreimportant than a family’s relationship with God, then they will learn that Godand goodness are not the highest priorities in life.

On the Feast Day of the only perfect family that ever lived on this earth, allof us are encouraged to examine ourselves and see how we are fulfilling theresponsibility which God has placed on us.I wish you every blessing for 2018 and I hope and pray that the New Yearwill bring every blessing and joy to your family and your friendship withChrist.
