This is where many of us completed our government careers supporting the services of our country. How we
wished for a parking garage. Well, the six floor garage
built on the former ball field or tennis courts is near completion. As stated in previous AMS News Abert
Hall has been torn down and another structure is being
built in its place too have with a glass façade creating
one unified continuous structure. The remodeling project is scheduled for completion in 2016. The
grounds will encompass a park-like setting complete
with trees and water structures in the former handicap, carpool, and reserve parking areas. When you are in the
area, drive by to see the progress of our former
“stomping grounds”.
Carderock Picnic
The picnic menu is finalized and we are ready for a fun time at the large Carderock Pavilion, Bethesda, MD on October 9. Maybe you attended
a department/office picnic, an awards ceremony, a crab feast, or just time away from work! Whatever the occasion those picnics hold good memories. Once again we are meeting at 11:30 AM and having lunch at noon and you can stay until dusk visiting and reminiscing of those days gone by. The cost is $15. “Putting on the Ritz” is catering the lunch serving Down home BBQ meats -- Hamburgers, all beef hot dogs, BBQ chicken & veggie burgers grilled on site with fresh rolls, mayo, mustard, ketchup, lettuce, tomatoes, cheese & sliced onions; Potato Salad Trio -- Red potatoes tossed in their own salad dressing; Pasta Salad Trio -- Rotini pasta with vegetables tossed in an Italian style sauce; Cole Slaw Trio -- Creamy homestyle; Beverages -- Iced tea with lemon wedge, Lemonade tangy, sweet & refreshing and Water containers with sliced fruit! ~~Remember to bring your favorite snacks and/or desserts to share and your lawn chair. Send your reservation and payment to Merle Biggin by October 2. (Page 7)

AMS PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
My message to all of our members
is that it is not how many membersan organization has but how many
“active” members it has. Members
that have attended our regular eventscontinue to enjoy the opportunity of
“Getting Together and Having Fun”.
However, response to special eventshas been disappointing. The Board
and committees have devoted a lot of time and effort in
putting together these special events that resulted in
them being cancelled because the minimum number tomake the event a reality fell short.
The election of 2015 AMS Officers is upon us. If the
next few lines sound familiar it is because they are. Our association needs officers and committee members to
survive. We still don’t have a Vice-President and the
other members of the Board and Committees need a“breathier”. The Board meets 6-8 times a year usually
before scheduled events and are open to all AMS
members. Per the AMS-BY–LAWS any member that
regularly attends meetings can vote on issues before the Board. If you are interested in becoming a member of
the Board, a committee member or just attending the
Board meetings please contact me via 301-663-5903 or e-mail [email protected].
My motto for this AMS News edition is “BECOME
ACTIVE and PARTICIPATE”.
On behalf of the Association, many thanks: to those thatattend our annual events, Board of Officers, Website
Master/Manager, Membership Chairman, AMS News
Editors/Publications, Special Event Planners/Coordinators, AMS 40th Anniversary Team and to Pat
Weed and the CFU for providing a meeting place for the
Board. Please visit the AMS WEBSITE www.mappers.org as it
is updated often.

Living Legend
Remembered
Recently NGA Director, Letitia Long, spoke at the Leadership Summit for Women in National SecurityCareers where she referenced Bea McPherson who was a Military Mapping Maiden (3Ms) and others who you may recognize. Bea was the AMS guest speaker at last year's holiday luncheon giving her experience of working at the Ruth Building during WWII. Bea was also featured in the Pathfinder when visiting NCE in Springfield, VA for Women's History Month in January. Bea is one of the many of AMS's Living Legends!

It was a perfect day to sit and eat crabs, have some corn onthe cob, BBQ ribs, potato salad, and other good food and evenwatermelon and cookies too. This was the first years for thenon-crab lovers to attend and pay only for the buffet. Thanksto the staff of the Constellation Federal Credit Union (CFCU)who attended and provided a variety of marketing items forattendees. It is always good to see friends who travel duringthe summer months back to the DC area. The afternoon began with Conley Phipps leading the groupwith the American Pledge followed by Bob Chance providingthe innovation and John Koslin directing the group singingGod Bless America. Door prizes are mainly provided by theAMS Board, however, thanks to several folks who provideadditional door prizes which allows for more attendees toreceive a prize.

The Fourth Annual AMS Murrells Inlet Marsh Walk
Luncheon was a great success. The event was held on
Thursday, September 18, 2014, at Captain Dave’s Dockside
restaurant in Murrells Inlet, SC and attended by 37
Association Members. Thirteen members who normally attend
the Luncheon were caught up in either pre or post surgeries or
had unexpected family issues and couldn’t attend this year.
Everyone arrived at the restaurant around 11:00 AM, enabling
everyone to visit for an hour while admiring the beautiful Inlet
Waters and Marsh Walk. We were then officially greeted by
John Iredell and Jim Clem, our co-hosts. John made some brief opening remarks, Jim led everyone in the Pledge of
Allegiance, and then John gave the Luncheon Prayer.
President Larry Bowles spoke on
his years of involvement in the Association of Mapping Seniors,
his enjoyment of being involved
and the concerns he has for its
future. He explained that the
Association has a solid
foundation, but runs the risk of
change if members fail to step up
to fill leadership roles. President Bowles also spoke on
the need to recruit new blood into the leadership chain
and the importance of filling the vacant position of vice
president.
Jim Tarleton was our guest
speaker. His message was
entertaining and informative.
Everyone enjoyed hearing the
history of how the Army Map
Service was started and how it
grew into the massive complex
that provided all of us with unique
employment careers. Mr. Tarleton
also shared how he started out his career at the age of 17
and elevated himself to the highest wage board position in the agency.
Drawings for door prizes took place with the winners
being: Barry Barwatt, Jack Beall, Larry Bowles, Connie Clem, Marie Edwards, Larry Johnson and Dave
McFarland.
The 50/50 was divided into two pots and the winners
were Edsel Phelps and Gary Edwards. Many thanks go out to Linda Weed for handling the selling of the 50/50
tickets. She did a terrific job!
Many thanks go to the Manager and Staff of Captain
Dave’s Dockside Restaurant. Their great service and terrific food helped make this luncheon a success.
Mark your calendar – September 17, 2015 –
2015 luncheon will be at the same location at Captain
Dave’s Dockside Restaurant. The Clem’s will again host an Open House and invite all attendees to their
home on Wednesday, September 16, 2015.
Respectfully Submitted,
Jim Clem

Virginia P. Queen
By Galen K. S. Queen
My first date with Virginia Elizabeth Plunk was to seethe Fourth-of-July Fireworks. I was hurting; I had beendumped by a young lady that did not want to settle downto one man. How telling Virginia about being dumpedgot me a second date is a mystery to me. But it did and we continued to date. We talked aboutwhat each wanted and developed an agreement. The first question of marriage was, “When?” I choose another holiday: Christmas. On Christmas Day 1946we were married.
As my wife, Virginia P. Queen, let me be my ownperson and I did likewise for her. As for what Virginia did before our agreement, I never asked and Virginia told very little. After all, our agreement was for our future together and did not rest on our past. She helpedme continue my education and gave me five red-headedchildren. As for being qualified to raise those children,I know I was not. But they grew up anyway.
Well, the children left our home and the time to retirecame. For the next fifteen years, we lived in a motor-home traveling and visiting children, family, and friends. The last fifteen years, Virginia was too ill for muchtraveling. Virginia’s illness was best treated withmedicine that had such bad side effects that she had tostop using it. Then the reason for taking the medicine returned. As one doctor put it, “You are Damned if youdo and you are Damned if you don’t.” Now Virginia isat rest, and I no longer have a wonderful companion.
