Over the last 15 years NRSP-IRM has catered to the training needs of NRSP, other Rural Support Programmes (RSPs), public and private sector organisations, NGOs and INGOs in Pakistan, Central Asia and the SAARC countries. The Staff Training Programme is devoted to improving the specialized knowledge, skills and attitudes of development professionals who are recognized for their high performance, cultural sensitivities and professional competencies. Social Organisation Training NRSP, like the other ten RSPs, believes in “harnessing the people's potential” to ensure development which is equitable and sustainable. The institute therefore, informs and engages community members to recognize the benefits of forming Community Organisations (COs), so as to harness existing resources on a self-help basis for sustainable economic transformation in their lives. IRM has so far developed a wide range of training programmes in social organisation, that include programme packages for gender and development, skill enhancement of CO members and building community skills in monitoring and evaluating development interventions. One is in Rawalpindi working in collaboration with Behbud Pakistan since 2002, while one each in Muzaffarabad and Rawalakot, both started after the earthquake with the former in collaboration with ILO, aiming to assist communities rebuild their lives. VTEC facilities include Low-cost hostels and transportation facilities Hands-on learning with 80% practical work and 20% theoretical study Almost 100 different vocational training courses Laboratories to cater to different types of technical vocations Business Skills Management for initiating enterprise and self employment Accreditation by government training institutes like National Training Board, Skills Development Council and TEVTA (Government of Punjab) Teachers' Resource Up-gradation Center (TRUC) In order to respond to the deficiencies in public and private sector schools, IRM established this resource center in 2005 based at IRM in Islamabad. It is run by skilled trainers and benefits from the advice of international education experts. quality of education.

Health-sector training focuses on building the skills and capacities of paramedics who address issues in the service delivery of primary and reproductive health care and health awareness. IRM's training courses teach how to access safe drinking water and sanitation for healthy environment. These trainings have enabled hundreds of communities to maintain their own supply of clean water and to reap the economic and health benefits that result.

Vocational TrainingWith almost 100 kinds of vocational and

technical trades, IRM provides innovative and need-based capacity

building facility for rural men and women. The courses enable them to gain access to sustained employment, better wages, and business opportuni t ies that

maximize their profits. Women's skills enhancement is a special feature

of vocational training with many vocational fields dedicated entirely to women.

There is a special allowance for people with disabilities to take up skills that mainstream them into normal pursuits of life.

Academics Programme - The Future IRM's Academics programme will offer a unique combination of theoretical and applied research on multiple aspects of rural development and poverty alleviation. With an aim to institutionalize field based learning into an academic purview, this programme will become the foundation for the University of Poverty Studies. The current Post Graduate Programme offers a Diploma in 'Human Resource M a n a g e m e n t ' a n d ' N G O Leadership and Management' and a Diploma in English Language Proficiency. Additional Diplomas in Social Development, Micro Finance, Monitoring and Evaluation and Gender and Development are planned.

Centers of IRMAs the scope of IRM's work expands, centers have been established to maintain the task of support and resource

development.

Akhter Hameed Khan Resource Center (AHKRC)The Resource Center, established in 2000, is

named after the pioneer of social mobilization and participatory

development in Pakistan and South Asia. Akhter Hameed Khan was the founder of the "Orangi Pilot Project" in Pakistan and the Comilla Project in Bangladesh. His outstanding contributions also

include Daudzai Integrated Rural Development Programme in

N.W.F.P and Aga Khan Rural Support Programme.

With RSPN's support, AHKRC functions as a unique and dynamic hub of development information from Pakistan, South Asia and other regions of the world. Our services include:

� Physical Library with over 9,000 titles and 25 periodicals

� M e m b e r s h i p - b a s e d f a c i l i t y f o r s t u d e n t s , professionals, academicians and general public

� Internet Research facility with access to online libraries and journals

� Write Shop: Generates annual and quarterly reports, quarterly newsletter 'HRD Communiqué, case studies and other documentation to support IRM's activities

� Graphics Studio: Web Development, Desktop Design and printing facilities

� Audio/Visual Studio: Provides documentation, des ign and A/V serv ices to development organisations

� Research: With support from RSPN and through a Research Advisory Board, the center engages researchers on issues of RSPs concern

Management Training Programme Courses in this programme enhance the training skills of development practitioners to support community development programmes adapted to meet community requirements. With almost 100 different types of training packages, IRM trains the staff of RSPs and other NGOs to become trainers who motivate c o m m u n i t i e s t h r o u g h s o c i a l mobilization.

The “Orientation Training Workshop” is an intensive 15-day course along with a 3-day refresher training with rigorous field attachments. Designed for NRSP Interns, it is recognized by other development organisations as a reliable way of creating in-depth understanding of practical and theoretical issues in development.

Micro Finance ProgrammeIf community members save, they are more likely to become

self-reliant, therefore, COs are encouraged to open and contribute regularly to a

savings accounts. This offers emergency relief to community members who are in dire need; in addition to that it can also be invested for individual or community-based enterprise and infrastructure development. The

institute offers scores of Micro Finance training packages and also

f ac i l i t a t e s l i nkages be tween communities and Micro Finance services.

Professional Development Programme The Professional Development Program with support from Rural Support Programmes Network (RSPN), an umbrella forum of the Rural Support Programmes in Pakistan, aims to enhance professional competencies of senior and mid level managers of the RSPs by developing a need based curricula for training packages that provide academic, technical and managerial up-gradation of skills. A year-long Women's Leadership Programme that will supplement the managerial

capabilities of women employees of RSP as well as other civil society organisations is also an integral component of the PDP programme.

The Community Training Programme strengthens the process of social mobilization by building CO members' management capacities to break the vicious cycle of poverty by training rural men and women in acquiring marketable skills.

Community Management Training Programme Focused on enhancing the management and leadership skills

of community activists and leaders, this section equips them with the skills of

financial management, book-keeping, participatory planning, monitoring and identification of community needs for enterprise development. T r a i n i n g c o u r s e s i n c l u d e Community Management Skills,

Training programmes.

Natural Resource Management Training Environmental conservation is a cross cutting theme in our training of community members about sustainable natural resource management. IRM offers over 35 types of training programmes for all aspects of crop management, livestock and fisheries management, social forestry and beekeeping. We train master trainers and community members in innovative resource management, focusing on income-generation, environmental conservation and sustainable land-based livelihoods.

Social Sector TrainingFocusing on education, health and sanitation, this section trains teachers from government and community based schools in 'child-friendly' pedagogy. Based on the precepts of social mobilization, the p r o g r a m m e e m p h a s i z e s strengthening community-based school management and monitoring the
