A message from the Executive DirectorA link is not just a ring or piece

of a chain, it serves to connect one part with another. A link is a bond or tie.

Sylvania Community Services (SCS) and our two service lines, Sylvania Child Care and the Sylvania Senior Center, are closely linked to the Sylvania community by the many partnerships we have established over almost 40 years of serving our seniors and our children.

First and foremost is the partnership between the City of Sylvania, Sylvania Township and Sylvania School Board that created Sylvania Community Services in 1976. That partnership has grown stronger over the years, and we are everlastingly grateful for it. In 2002, a partnership between SCS, the City and the Township enabled us to move the Senior Center into a wonderful building on Sylvania Avenue that is senior-friendly and ADA compliant. For years now, our Child Care preschool and before-and after-school programs have been hosted in Sylvania Schools facilities, as is our main office.

Many other partnerships have enabled us to help thousands of our seniors and children, not to mention their families. When seniors use our computer lab to learn new technologies they are better able to keep in touch with family and friends who are far away. And because our Child Care offers a unique “pay as you go” service, parents and guardians take comfort in knowing that whatever their schedule, we’ll be there for them. We’ll help their children learn and grow while they are at work.

Thank you, Sylvania, for partnering with us and allowing us to serve you for our 38th year!

Claire A. ProctorExecutive Director, Sylvania Community Services

In July, the Duplicate Bridge Tournament, organized by Senior Center participants and duplicate bridge players Haynes Lee and Jill Koehler, brought together bridge players from the Senior Center and the Toledo Bridge Club in support of the Senior Center and the Foundation.

The Foundation’s inaugural Taste & Create event in November provided an evening of fun for ladies of all ages. Featuring a wine tasting and pottery painting, the event generated lots of laughter as well as proceeds for the Foundation. Many thanks to our event Sponsors: Vibrant Life Senior Living, Walker Funeral Homes, Oakleaf Village of Toledo & The Grove, Kingston Residence of Sylvania, Farmers & Merchants State Bank, Metamora State Bank and Homewood Press.

Sylvania Community Services (SCS), along with our two services lines – Sylvania Child Care and the Sylvania Senior Center – rely on many partners throughout the community to provide quality services to Sylvania-area seniors and children.

From the beginning, we have relied on the City of Sylvania, Sylvania Township and Sylvania Schools for facilities that enable us to provide great service, efficiently. We’re very pleased that all three entities are represented on our Board of Directors. We are very grateful that Sylvania Schools houses our Child Care locations, including Woodrow and Northview preschools and before- and after-school care in five elementary schools. Our SCS offices are housed in the Sylvania Schools administrative building. And since 2002, the Senior Center has enjoyed its beautiful location on Sylvania Avenue, thanks to the City and Township, who built a state-of-the-art facility that is the envy of many senior centers in the area.

Senior Center Participant Council

Participant Council is a valued partner in activities that support the Senior Center. Their fundraising events, including the annual Follies and Chili Dinner, have raised thousands of dollars over the past decade. They regularly help out with items that benefit the senior center. In 2014, they helped install low energy swing doors – a “must” project to assist our participants who are less agile. They have been a great supporter of our young SCS Foundation by making significant financial gifts directly in addition to supporting Foundation fundraising activities.

SCS PartnershipsCity of Sylvania, Sylvania Township and Sylvania Schools

Lourdes UniversitySCS partnered with Lourdes University

in 2014 to undertake a review and update of our Human Resources policies. This provided hands-on practical experience for a graduate student and was very cost effective for us.

Keep Toledo/Lucas County Beautiful

Since 2013, the Senior Center has partnered with Keep Toledo/Lucas County Beautiful (KTLCB) on our “Go Green Partnership”. Thanks to that partnership and a recommendation from KTLCB, in 2014 we worked with the University of Toledo’s Engineering Department to install rain barrels near our community garden area. For helping the Senior Center “go green”, Melissa Greene and Juliana Sample of KTLCB were honored with Senior Center Partnership Awards in 2014.

Longtime volunteer greeter Jean Hobling says that the new doors are so helpful and easy to use.

Sylvania Child Care to this gift were classroom activities

celebrating Dr. Seuss’ birthday and

reading, including a visit from former

WTOL anchor Chrys Peterson and the

opportunity to make and eat “green

Meet Carol Brinker

Carol Brinker and her husband moved back to the Toledo area two years ago to be closer to their children. Carol’s grandchildren attended Sylvania Child Care, and her daughter suggested that she volunteer to read to the children at the Woodrow Preschool. Carol enjoyed it so much that she became an employee, filling in as a substitute primarily at Woodrow as well as the before- and after-school program at Highland, although she goes wherever she is needed. Carol says that she loves the program; the staff is warm and welcoming and she loves the relationships she forms with the children everywhere she goes. Most of all, “The thing that brings me the most joy and pleasure is working with the kids.”

Reading and Kindergarten Preparedness

The majority of Sylvania Child Care

preschool students go on to attend

kindergarten in the Sylvania School

system. As a gateway to Sylvania

Schools, our classroom staff and

administrators use the Handwriting

Without Tears curriculum to begin

teaching children to write.

Aligning our curriculum to Sylvania

Schools helps make the transition

to kindergarten easier. Our staff

works to build a love of learning in

our students. Towards that end, in

March 2014, the generosity of many

donors allowed the SCS Foundation

to purchase copies of the Dr. Seuss

classic “Green Eggs & Ham” for all 78

of our preschool students. Tied in

Summer Camp In 2014, 201 children attended

our Summer Camp Program.

Our teachers and staff work

to ensure that summer camp

students have fun while learning.

Dividing the campers into younger

school-age campers and “tween”

campers allows our staff to provide

developmentally appropriate

activities for each group. One

highlight this year for the “tween”

campers was a visit to the Spangler

candy company in Bryan, Ohio.

In business for over 100 years,

Spangler not only allows students

to tour the factory (learning about

and sampling candy), they can

work with teachers to incorporate

math, history, science and writing

activities into students’ visits.

Other special field trips enjoyed

by the “tween” group were the

Butterfly House in Whitehouse,

577 Foundation in Perrysburg

and, of course, regular visits to

the pool. Summer campers of all

ages enjoyed visiting Imagination

Station in Toledo.

Our younger students exercised

both their bodies and minds.

The before- and after-school program served 556 students and their families in 2013-14. Twenty of those families, including 30 children, received $5,940 in scholarship and financial assistance that year. Jennifer and her son Ethan are one such family.

A single mother who moved to Toledo to study nursing and build a better future for her family, Jennifer needed a child care program that she could trust absolutely to care for her child. With their extended family support system hours away in Michigan, Jennifer and

her son Ethan struggled with school, work and the challenges of being away from home.

In 2013, Jennifer and Ethan moved to Sylvania, where he now attends fourth grade at Hillview Elementary. Jennifer chose Sylvania Child Care’s before- and after-school program at Hillview/Whiteford based on positive recommendations from co-workers whose children also attended. Ethan has blossomed in his new school and in the Sylvania Child Care program. He loves being able to hang out with his friends and going on field trips when he attends all-day summer camp. Jennifer says “Ethan has friends here; I just don’t worry about him while I’m at work.”

In 2014, Jennifer was struggling financially and was close to making a decision to leave the Child Care program. Through Ashley, the Hillview/Whiteford site administrator, Jennifer applied for and is receiving tuition assistance from Sylvania Child Care. “Without this program, I wouldn’t be able to work. It’s a huge help.”

Sylvania Senior Center

This year, the Senior Center served

over 2,800 seniors ages 55 and

up. To respond to the diverse and

changing needs of our seniors, our

approach is multi-faceted. We review

our programming regularly to be

proactive in meeting seniors’ needs.

This year, we added Friday afternoon

line dancing to our schedule. This has

proven to be extremely popular and

is a great way for seniors to get some

exercise without feeling like they’ve

been through a strenuous workout.

Nearly 900 seniors participated in our

various health/wellness education

classes in 2014. We also added a

monthly class “Medicare and You” to

our Tuesday evening program.

At the same time, we continue to

support seniors’ independence by

offering them transportation to key

destinations such as the grocery

store, pharmacy pick-up, banking

and to the Center for nutritious meals

and engaging activities. We provided

over 2,900 one-way trips in 2014.

We also provided nearly 850 medical

assessments at the Center, including

blood pressure and blood sugar

screenings, audio and vision checks

and more.

Our medical screenings are very popular and many participants use them weekly.

VolunteeringVolunteering keeps seniors

active and engaged with their community. In 2014, our volunteers logged more than 38,000 hours inside and outside the Center. This includes partnerships to provide service opportunities for students from several area high schools, including Northview, Southview and St. John’s.

Each year our staff and board members review and update our strategic plan to ensure that we continue to deliver the best service to our seniors, as efficiently as possible. This has led to a revised Mission Statement for our Senior Center, one that we think more accurately captures why we are here to serve Sylvania’s seniors: To Promote Healthy Aging.

Sisters Nancy Beauregard and Marcia Houck are regular Friday greeters and members of the book and scrabble clubs.

Seniors in our woodshop provide valuable services to the community throughout the year, particularly through their work in hand-crafting beautiful flag boxes for deceased veterans’ families. We are proud to partner with Walker Funeral Homes and the Lucas County Burial Corps to present a moving Flag-Box Ceremony event annually around Veterans’ Day.

Our Knitting & Crocheting group gives seniors opportunities to exercise their fine motor skills and maintain dexterity and concentration, all while giving back to the community by partnering with organizations such as Mercy St. Vincent, the Ronald McDonald House and Baskets of Care to create hand-made lap blankets, hats, booties, shawls and more.

A former Executive Director of

Sylvania Community Services,

Sally Goetz retired in 2000. After

her husband’s passing in 2003, she

returned to the Senior Center as a

Mistress of Ceremonies of the annual

Senior Center Follies. She continued

in this capacity until 2014, a role that

necessitated not just year-round

collection of stories and jokes but also

six months of intensive rehearsal. She

also spent ten years on stage singing

and acting in the Follies. Remaining

nearly as busy now as when she was

working full-time, not only does Sally

work part-time for a realtor, she also

volunteers with her church and at

Flower Hospital, where she is a former

Volunteer of the 2nd Quarter. She

says she needs to be active.

For her dedication to the Center and

to volunteerism, Sally was recognized

as a 2014 Outstanding Volunteer for

Sylvania Community Services at the

National Philanthropy Day Luncheon

sponsored by the Northwest Ohio

Chapter of the Association of

Fundraising Professionals.

Meet Sally Goetz

Meet The Jenkins Family

Warren and Ernestine Jenkins

moved to Sylvania from the

Philadelphia area in 2010. Their

granddaughter was already living in

the area and brought them to the

Senior Center in 2011 so they could

get involved. Ernestine signed up

for the twice-weekly Strength and

Balance Class and Warren began

volunteering in the office.

Their daughter Debbie, who had

lived near them in the Philadelphia

area, also retired in 2013 and

joined them here. A former nurse’s

aide, Debbie volunteers with the

weekly blood pressure and glucose

screenings, has joined Strength and

Balance, and helped out with the 2014

Follies show.

All three Jenkins describe the

Center as a warm, welcoming place

with people who are “so full of life”.

Ernestine describes their exercise

group as a family. “It’s just the best

group of people”, she says “who

really look after one another.”

Debbie says that “if people get

lonesome, they should come here.”

And Warren, a World War II veteran,

has learned so much since he started

working as a volunteer. He says “I’m

growing older but I’m not old.”

Fundraising

FOUNDATIONSYLVANIA CHILD CARE

SYLVANIA SENIOR CENTER

Like most non-profit organizations,

Sylvania Community Services

(SCS), has financial needs that are

not completely covered by current

revenue sources. Our programs

and services are funded through a

combination of program fees, grants,

private donations and the Sylvania

Community Services Foundation. In

addition, the Senior Center receives

funds from the Sylvania Senior

Levy. Our challenge, over the past

several years, has been to maintain

or increase programming, while

grant support and levy funding

has declined, due in part to local

economic trends.

Over the past year and a half,

we’ve been working to create

new partnerships with individuals,

businesses and community

organizations to grow and strengthen

our private fundraising program.

This will help us to continue to meet

the diverse needs of the seniors and

children we serve and to help lessen

the demand on our local taxpayers.

Gifts from our supporters enable us to:

•Maintainandincreaseprograms

supporting the health, well-being and

independence of our seniors;

•Provideenrichedprogrammingfull

of creative, multi-sensory curricula

that promotes mental agility in

seniors and school preparedness in

children.

•Providescholarshipfundsto

ensure that all children have equal

opportunities for quality care and

teaching as their classmates have had.
