Commanders Report Cdr. Rick Hibbs, SN
Having survived a very mild winter, we can
start looking forward to spring!
But first, I want to thank everyone that helped
staff our booth at the Greater Rochester Boat Show.
For those that didn’t get to the show, or missed our
booth, we tried to uplift spirits this year! We added
three things new from previous years:
1.) Thanks to Exec O. John Zingo for
loaning his digital frame so we could
present a slide show of squadron
activities, with slides provided by
Tom Nicholas!
2.) Thanks to the Exec Board for
authorizing a drawing for two prizes
(flare kit; and fire extinguisher) that
gave us 28 entries, and therefore
contacts that we can alert to some
more of our upcoming activities.
3.) Thanks to SEO Steve Heffron for
loaning us his lighted palm tree to
attract more attention to our booth
location!
Our goal was to try to increase awareness of the
Rochester Sail & Power Squadron using our booth as
an opportunity to present our message to the boating
public. None of this would have happened without the
help of Bob Roth, our booth manager, setting up our
booth, and Vonda Lighthouse, our booth staff
manager, for lining up members to cover the hours at
the show.
Thanks to everyone!

At the March meeting, we are looking forward to a
presentation about the history and restoration of the
steam/sail yacht Cangarda, a long time resident of the
Genesee River berthed alongside the old railroad depot
across from the GYC. This is a great opportunity to
bring a boating friend (not currently a member of our
squadron) as a guest!
Watch for details of April events: April
meeting at GYC is expected to feature Carl Lundgren
with an interesting update on the ocean crossing
adventure he was planning when he spoke to us last
year. A week after Easter, we’ll be meeting at the
Brook House restaurant for the Commander’s Brunch
on April 15th
!
We met at the Murph’s Pub for our February
meeting & had an enjoyable evening starting with
drinks and dinner, followed by a concluding session of
general input for the year’s activities. We have firmed
up two important details for our squadron
meeting/picnic on June 6: location – Kanatota “A”,
Lake Rd, Webster; and event coordinators to be Judy
and Joe Rizzo! Watch out, because Judy and Bridgett
Arieno seem to be kindred spirits dedicated to
increasing the fun level of our events! Could there be
wine tastings involved?
And finally, the group put out a lot of ideas and
enthusiasm for an on the water event, a Poker Run!
Looks like the date will be either Sat. Aug 25th
or Sun
the 26th
, depending on where we get a “home base”
commitment.
See you at the March meeting at GYC!

General Meeting Programs:
P/C James Haas, P
March:
Dick Sherwood from the Finger Lakes
Classic Boat Club will be back again to give
a presentation covering the steam yacht
Cangarda, which for many years was docked
directly across the Genesee River from the
Genesee Yacht Club.
It is a magnificent craft built in 1901.
Dick will cover the interesting history of the
yacht; it’s past and present owners and the
extensive work done to completely restore
it.
April:
Carl Lundgren will be giving a presentation
on his experiences in getting ready to sail to
Ireland and the problems he encountered
trying to complete the trip.
May:
Mark Gregor , the City of Rochester’s Port
Development Manager, will be giving a
presentation on the city’s development
plans for the port of Rochester.
Planning for the port has been ongoing for
the past 30 years.
The area totals more than 20 city-owned
acres that for years have been an expansive
parking lot around the terminal building
between Lake Avenue and the Genesee
river.
RAMBLIN’S ROUND THE RIVER
By: Lt. Kevin G. Parks, AP (Star Reporter)
Well gentle readers; here we are in the throes of the winter you’d wish you’d never hauled
for. Well the bad news on the river is that they have decided that Rochester is not important enough to
receive funding for dredging and of course that follows; neither does Irondequoit Bay. They feel the
tonnage on our river is insufficient to justify the dredging and of course Irondequoit Bay carrying no
commercial tonnage is also forgotten. But the Army Corp of Engineer; when they opened the bay saw fit to
remove an Island which was, if you will, a delta near the exit of the waters. There was a huge tree and some
assorted weedy bushes on that Island and I remember picnicking on it many years ago. But they thought by
simply removing the tree and scooping out the Island the Bay would somehow forget why it created it. They
were wrong and now wish to relinquish their responsibility of dredging it for they made a permanent
maintenance situation. And the River; which was a two year (at one time annual) dredging procedure is now
to be forgotten as well.
But in a more pleasant note the Great Lakes Joint Commission has decided that it is alright to raise
the lake levels a little bit. It probably won’t be consequential to boaters and it may be somewhat
inconsequential to lakeside land owners but it should be better for the general environment of the lake as
wetlands need their ebb and flow years. However, the environmental good that they are doing will probably
be offset by a new invasive species called the Hydrilla Weed which is in the bottom of Cayuga Lake and
working toward the canal at the North which will rapidly infect Lake Ontario and all surrounding waters.
This weed is unbelievably fast to regenerate taking only a couple of weeks; suffocating all local marine
species and slowing and choking boat propeller’s etc. Apparently there is insufficient funds to deal with it at
this time so do put a note in with your boat registration that you have paid these funds.
But on a lighter note our Lake is running nearly a foot above average which should launch us fine
and get us to our docks with no worries. However, I am concerned there was not much snow pack this year.
But we shall see how the regulators deal with it. Sorry to bring so much doom and gloom in this one but
take heart the covers will be coming off the boats before the next issue comes out.
Though it is not so cold it’s not so nice so I think I will head down to Murph’s for Bobby C’s
Karaoke night and a couple of cool ones. So in the mean time.…..Raise ‘em Up!
“Believe me, my young friend,” said the water rat solemely, “there is nothing…absolutely nothing…half so much worth
doing as simply messing about in boats. Simply messing…about in boats…or with boats. In or out of ‘em, it doesn’t matter.
Nothing seems really to matter, that’s the charm of it. Whether you get away, or whether you don’t; whether you arrive at your
destination or whether you reach somewhere else, or whether you never get anywhere at all, you’re always busy, and you never do
anything in particular; and when you have done it there is always something else to do, and you can do it if you like, but you’d
much better not. Look here! If you’ve really nothing else on hand this morning, supposing we drop down the river together, and
have a long day of it?” from: The Wind and The Willows
