My dearest sisters and brothers in Christ,

At Holy Trinity we strive to be Christ-Centered: partnering, serving, growing, supporting, praising, and

spiritual.

Are you thinking that Pastor Brian is sounding like a broken record these days? I apologize if that is the

case. My argument is that we continue to see an influx of new people in our midst. Like us, they need to

experience the power words which steer our thoughts and actions. We are a church which is preparing for the

future. Therefore, we set our vision on a secure future with Christ while trying to live into the words that

Christ has commissioned for us.

Matthew 28:16-20 read as thus: “16 Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which

Jesus had directed them. 17 When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. 18 And Jesus came and

said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of

all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching

them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the

age”(NRSV).

We call this passage the Great Commission. Although this passage occurs soon after Jesus’ resurrection, it

still speaks to us today. My guess is that the mountain which Jesus directed the disciples to go is one in the

same as the Transfiguration mountain. At this mountain, the inner circle of disciples witnessed the majesty

and splendor of Christ. It’s where the temporal (worldly) comes to meet the divine. Christ is inviting us to tell

others, “Come and meet our Divine Creator.” Come and discover how much love is poured out- for you.

Come and release the worries, fears, and pressures of this world.

We live in a world where fear seems to be determining peoples’ actions. They are caring for self, securing

worldly items so they have an abundance for tomorrow. We know that these worldly things are temporary.

Instead of us trying to secure our future, we seek to help people today with the blessings we have first received

from God. We do this because we know our future to be secured already through Christ.

This past year, Holy Trinity has been abundantly blessed by God. Gift after gift is being poured upon us.

With these gifts, we have responded whole-heartedly. This self-less giving has created a celebratory

atmosphere in my heart and in the hearts of many of our fellow sisters and brothers. I pray that we can all join

in this celebration. I pray that our hearts will continue to be open to God’s call to live today because our

future is full of blessings.

I invite everyone to actively give of their time, talents, and treasures so we can live responsively to the gift

of security through Christ. I invite everyone to pray on how they should live into the vision of Holy Trinity,

then share with me the possibilities of being Christ-Centered. This fall let’s be the doers of the Great

Commission as we invite others to Come and See the splendor of God.

Your partner in Christ,

Pr. Brian

to Easter.

All of our bills are paid current including our monthly commitment of

$625.00 to the Synod for Benevolence. As I write this report in early August, I’m

happy to report that the August Benevolence payment has already been made. We

are next owing for September.

The following “special gifts” were received in July:

$ 40.00 - Benevolence

$ 85.00 - Debt

$926.00 - Pastor’s discretionary Fund

2019 (Sept. –Dec.) See you in church. Thanks, John Marakovits, Treasurer

ELECTRONIC GIVING!! “SIMPLY GIVING”

Your annual pledge helps us forecast the level of financial support our congregation will receive in the year ahead. It is through the pledges and contributions that we are able to carry on our work here at Holy Trinity.

We offer Electronic Giving as a way to automate your offerings. It is convenient for you and provides much-needed consistency for the church. Collection basket offerings can fluctuate significantly from week to week but when contributions are automated, the church receives funds on a steady, uninterrupted basis. To learn more, call the church

610-264-2641.

At any time, you can give donations to the “Pastor’s Discretionary Fund”. This fund is used to give temporary financial assistance to people of our congregation and community when a sudden need arises. You may send contributions to the church or place them in the offering plate on Sunday mornings. Please mark your checks or envelopes “Pastor’s Discretionary Fund”.

Attention Kitchen Angels and “Friends”

It’s that time of year for our annual kitchen housecleaning. In addition to our Kitchen Angels we are asking anyone in the congregation to help with this task.

We need to keep our kitchen up to par to meet the criteria of being a licensed kitchen. This is required by the borough of Catasauqua in order to serve this community.

A list of tasks is posted in the kitchen cabinet just to the right of the sink. Sing up for what you could help us with and have it completed at your convenience. We are hoping to have everything done by September 27th.

We also welcome anyone who would like to join our team of “Angels”. Many hands make light work.

Any questions please contact Rena Bond at 610-264-0340.

ALERT: The youth are no longer collecting pill bottles for Through These Hands. They advised Nancy Miller, who volunteers there, that they can no longer take them...reason unknown to us. Thank you to everyone who faithfully collected them for the past 3 years, and to Nancy for delivering the bottles for us to TTH. And kudos to the youth (with some behind-the-scene parent nudging or help) who have washed and reassembled literally THOUSANDS of pill bottles! PLEASE RECYCLE YOUR PILL BOTTLES! You might think the youth completely disappeared over the summer because of their absence from the worship services for most of the summer, but they've actually been at HT more than you realize. Those who were available met 5 times for youth-only 1st and 3rd over the summer. Hats off to some special volunteering by Brianna Walker, who helped on occasion to share lunches at the Catty playground as part of HT's summer lunch program; volunteered on two occasions to help babysit for Christine's well-loved little ones at HT; and made the annual trek with me to the Brethren Center in New Windsor, Maryland, where 4 of us packed 2 1/2 TONS of school, personal care, and school kits for shipment by Lutheran World Relief. Bri was a busy gal this summer, when you add in her weeks at Creation Festival in June and her week at Bear Creek Camp in August, where she had a chance to catch up with Mady Williams. July found the youth being honored by the Catty library as a thank-you for their donation of the $823 from their May Taco/Potato Bar. We enjoyed pizza and a special showing of Apollo 11...and time spent together is always good! Thank you to our hostess, librarian Sandra Arden, and her assistant hosts Darryl and Kathy. A few nights later, Emily Suter and Hunter Reitz took a ride in Joe's Mustang convertible to take in another movie, Captain Marvel, at Coca Cola Park, courtesy of Frank Nacci. Yup, we sat on the grass that has borne the footprints of so many Phillies players who have moved up from the Iron Pigs! Thanks to Pastor Brian's amazing knack for cultivating partnerships in our community, the youth have a new friend in Paul Cmil, photographer for the Catasauqua Press. One night at Coffee with a Cop, Paul listened in while Pastor Brian and I talked about what the youth have been up to in 2019, as well as their plan to use some of their savings to purchase bean bag chairs for the youth room. Paul was inspired to pull some strings to get a youth article and photos on an over-half-page spread in the August 8th issue of the Press, which you can see hanging in the hallway as well as on the youth room door...and he donated $100 to the youth to help fund their bean bag dream!!! The makeover of the room was completed with the addition of a super-sized cabinet from St. Paul's, freeing up floor space for those bean bag chairs. Big thank you to Bob Bastian, Joe Schwindenhammer and Florida friend Paul Gamache, former HT youth Zack Walker, Lester Ettl, Jerry Charvala, and Luther Itterly for making the challenging move of that cabinet possible! Venture down into the basement sometime to check out the "new" youth room! As we enter the fall, we say farewell to Sam Wetzel, who has often been a mainstay in youth events. Best wishes at Penn State, Sam!! PARENTS & YOUTH: 1st and 3

rd will be held on Sept. 8

th and 22nd.

Scrip News Fundraiser...that word makes us all cringe, but it's an integral part of the school year! So, in an effort to be sensitive to that touchy subject, I'll keep it short and simple this month about Holy Trinity's ongoing fundraiser, the SCRIP gift card program, with these 3 points:

2019 has seen an increase in regular participants in the monthly SCRIP card orders, going from 6 individuals in 2018 to 9 this year. One of those faithful is not actually a member of Holy Trinity, though it feels like she is. So....does anyone see anything wrong with that picture?

In spite of somewhat disappointing participation since the program started at Holy Trinity in April 2014, a total of over $11,000 has been raised, supporting a broad range of Christian education expenses and a generous scholarship to graduating seniors. The hardest step to take is often the first one...See Joe or Diane to get involved!

THE DEADLINE FOR OUR SEPTEMBER ORDER IS SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 8TH. Ya gotta shop anyway...why not use SCRIP cards?!

2019 Monthly Fellowship and Refreshments

On July 14th, Diane Czar and Joe S fed everyone before boarding the bus to Cape May. Fresh fruit, bagels, cookies and beverages were enjoyed by all.

On August 11th, Bob and Judy Connelly and Bob Schweitzer and Mary Ann Gibbons provided egg casseroles and sausage and homemade tea breads and

cake.

NEIGHBOR SUPPORTING NEIGHBOR

Final figure is now available from the Father's Day collection on behalf of Lutheran Congregational Service Disaster Relief appeal. A total of $75 was donated to honor those special men in your lives.

The planning meeting for the annual Ingathering of gifts will be held on Tuesday, September 17, 7pm at Hope Cherryville. Come learn about this Christmas ministry to the larger community! See Cheryl Kneiss, Judy Spaits, or Diane Czar if you'd like to carpool to the meeting.

Thank you to everyone who donated so generously to the school supply collection for our 3 Catty schools. Check out the Morning Glories article for their amazing support of our community kids. Thank you to Janis Charvala, who arranged for pickup up by school personnel of all of the donations in time for the start of school. Your last-minute donations will still be delivered to the school administration office.

The summer lunch program was incredible! The street outside HT's entrance was often lined with cars of volunteers coming in Monday through Thursday to prepare lunches for about 125 kids a day. This included the return of last summer's volunteers from Salem UCC and St. Paul's. Each morning found the kitchen filled with chatter and laughter as sandwiches were prepared and fruits & veggies cut up and bagged. Taco Thursdays and the introduction of chicken wraps were especially well-received by the kids! Then the second shift rolled in to share the lunches at the North Catty playground and the Catty Park, sometimes joined by the mayor, police chief, or firefighters. Kids came back enthusiastically for seconds when available, and relationships with parents and kids were fostered - including that kid with the Cowboys hat who asked with a bright smile, "Do you know me?" when he showed up one day without his hat - showing how special the gentle teasing about his team affiliation every day had made him feel.

In a community hungering for both food and relationship, thank you to all who support our Catasauqua neighbors by bringing nonperishable food and grocery bags for the Catty food bank, and to those who leave money in the "Meant to but forgot" container. Why not try out one of the "Just One Thing" bags located on the food table in the hallway outside the fellowship hall, and on or near the big green wooden box in the back of the sanctuary? Each time you go to a store that offers nonperishable foods, purchase Just One Thing to put in the little shopping bag. When it's full, bring it back in and take a new bag to keep up the habit!

Other ways you can support our neighbors:

Come to Coffee With a Cop each month and be the face of Holy Trinity as we (anonymously) fund a snack for our neighbors and share some time and conversation. Thank you to the Catasauqua Borough for donating the use of the pavilion at the Catty Park on August 15th, where 57 neighbors enjoyed free ice cream, and another 10 or so people came out just to be part of the community. How cool is it that some of the kids from the playground lunches came out for ice cream that night?! And in case you weren't at Holy Trinity the following Sunday morning when Pastor Brian shared this high: someone from the community quietly slipped Pastor Brian a check for $1000 during cleanup, simply saying "Just keep doing good things for Catty"! God is so good.

Serve or just enjoy some lunch and conversation the last Saturday each month. You might not be a resident of Catty, but as a part of our Holy Trinity family, each of us is a neighbor to the people who do live in Catty. Become a familiar, caring face as we work to get our neighbors out from their houses and into community. Our next ones are August 31st and September 28th from 11-12:30. Community Memorial Service Sept. 8

th at Catasauqua Park. Registration begins at 1:30pm “Blessing of the

Angels” And other ways God has blessed HT's Neighbor Supporting Neighbor activities:

Thanks to the bright idea & effort of Vicki and Steph Chimics, Sam's Club on Airport Road donated $500 toward the purchase of supplies for HT's lunch program! In response to the partnering message presented by Pastor Brian at St. Timothy Allentown's WOW service in July, worshippers that night donated a carload of snacks and water for the summer lunches in Catty, as well as over $400 in cash!

Trinity Morning Glories

We are a daytime women’s group here at Holy Trinity. Our focus is on the spiritual and service to others. Along the way, we share food, work, laugh, chat and pray together! Please join us!

Note: Our meetings will always be the 3rd Monday at 10:00 (exception: Dec. will be the 2nd Monday).

On Monday, August 19, 2019, 27 women enjoyed pizza, veggies and delicious desserts.

In Pat Fried’s devotions, she used a quote from Cryptograms: “The hardest thing in life is knowing which bridges to burn and which bridges to cross.” Pat spoke about living in the day not the past and not the future. And about enjoying the blessing of today.

Our guest speaker was Melissa Brown, the Director of the Catasauqua YMCA. Melissa spoke about the YMCA Summer Lunch Program for which the people at Holy Trinity prepared the bag lunches Monday thru Thursday. She said that 2,994 bag lunches were prepared over the summer; 2,094 went to the Catasauqua Playground and 900 to the North Catasauqua Playground Program. Melissa related that the children receiving the lunches were from low-income families. This program was made possible thru grants from local businesses and agencies, donations from people in the community and donations from Holy Trinity members. Note: Holy Trinity continued the lunches for 2 weeks after the YMCA program ended for an additional 240 lunches.

Our “Murder at Mardi Gras” mystery dinner theater tickets for September 21 can be reserved/bought from Judy Connelly (610 697-1724) or Janis Charvala (610 440-0073). Of the 80 tickets we can sell, only 4 tickets are available anymore. CALL NOW! Note: Review 3rd page of MG notes for what you volunteered to bring.

As part of our annual participation in the National Pajama Program, Judy Spaits and Joan Herman will prepare the new pajamas and book collection box for the back of church. All collected items will go to a charitable organization in the Lehigh Valley. The box will be in church Nov. 1 thru Dec. 9.
