The Holy Father’s November Prayer
Intention Evangelization: To witness to the Gospel in Asia That Christians in Asia, bearing witness to the Gospel in word and deed, may promote dialogue, peace, and mutual understanding, especially with those of other religions.
Last weekend was the bye week for the Packers, which was probably a blessing. It meant that Green Bay had an extra week of getting used to their new quarterback. It was a bit of a respite, very similar to my time away three weeks ago while I was on retreat. I talked about what a retreat is two weeks ago and said then that I may have some further comments on how the retreat went. I didn’t have space last weekend, so, briefly, it was a great week! The retreat master, Archbishop Broglio from the Archdiocese of the Military Services, was very good. He used as a theme for the week the sixth chapter of St. John’s Gospel. That is the chapter on the Eucharist or the Bread of Life. He related the Eucharist to the priesthood as the two are inte-grally connected. His conferences were very spiritual but at the same time very practical. The opportunity for extra prayer and rest was also greatly appreciated. My opinion is that I benefited tremendously from that week of contemplation. On a lesser level my hope is that the Packers will have bene-fited from their week off as they face the Lions in Green Bay this Monday evening. The Redskins look like they need another bye week after last Sun-day’s game against Dallas. Of course they have had numerous injuries, which I am sure has affected their play, and their bye was a month ago.
This month of November is dedicated to the Poor Souls suffering in purgatory. Just this past week we celebrated All Saints Day on the first and then on the second was All Souls Day. On that Thursday in a special way we remembered all those souls still awaiting the glory of heaven. This whole month is also a reminder of how important our prayers are for those souls. It is always sad when you hear a funeral homily and the priest or deacon says the person is already in heaven. Obviously, that is our hope, but even for the best among us it is very possible that we do not die in a perfect state. Heaven is perfect so to enter it imperfectly would detract from what heaven is. Thus, purgatory is a great gift that God provides, for it is where we are purified (or “purged”) of those imperfections. Without purgatory almost none of us would make it to heaven. With purgatory we have a much greater chance. We still have to die in the state of grace, which is why regular con-fession is so necessary along with our weekly, if not more often, Mass at-tendance and our daily prayers and good works. All of this helps us, but we can also offer those Masses, prayers, and good works for the souls in purga-tory, especially those of our own loved ones. That then is why when a homi-list says someone is already in heaven days after dying, they may be deprived of our prayers, which would have helped them get out of this place (or state) of purging. By the way, from what we know purgatory is not a pleasant place. It isn’t as bad as hell, but it truly is not a place to we should look for-ward to, although again we are grateful to God for this opportunity to be pu-rified.
One way of practicing our Faith and avoiding hell and possibly even purgatory is to be true to the teachings of our Faith and to defend it and pro-mote it. How we vote, including this Tuesday, really does matter. While al-most no candidate is perfect some better reflect the teachings of the Church whether they are Catholic or not. There are certain stands some of them take that are completely opposed to natural law as well as God’s law. It is important that we do our research and choose wisely. Issues such as abor-tion and so-called “same sex marriage” are non-negotiable. There is more flexibility with issues such as immigration and environmentalism. A good resource to help us make our decision this week can be found at the Virginia Catholic Conference website, vacatholic.org. Lastly, as this week is National Vocation Awareness Week, we have a seminarian with us. I will also speak next week on our “giving.” ~ In Christ, Fr. Kleinmann

Inscribe the Book of Remembrance Remember your deceased loved ones in prayer throughout the month of November by inscribing their names in the Book of Remembrance, which we will have displayed on a pedestal near the devotional candles and confessionals in the church.
Plenary Indulgence for Souls in Purgatory A plenary indulgence, applicable only to the souls in purgatory, is granted under the usual conditions to the faithful who, on any day from November 1st until November 8th, devoutly visit a cemetery and pray, if only mentally, for the departed. “An indulgence is a remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven, which the faithful Christian who is duly disposed gains under certain prescribed conditions through the action of the Church which, as the minister of redemption, dispenses and applies with authority the treasury of the satisfactions of Christ and the
saints. An indulgence is partial or plenary according as it removes either part or all of the temporal punishment due to sin.” Catechism of the Catholic Church Para. 1471.
Broken Rosaries and Sacramentals? Drop them off at the parish office. A team of skilled parishioners will lovingly restore and return them for pick-up. Alternatively, you may donate them for repair and use by others.

means your gift will go to a resident at Manor Care Nursing Home who may have no family or friends to remember them during this most Holy Season. After you have selected a Purple or Pink Tag, make your purchase. Please note that Purple Tag gifts are UNWRAPPED and Pink Tag gifts are WRAPPED. Each November St. Veronica parish is responsible for delivering food items to those in need in the Herndon, Sterling and Ashburn areas. LINK, an organization of churches and local businesses, helps out folks all year long with different programs including help with electric bills and emergency relief for those who qualify. The food that you see in the vestibules on the second Sunday of the month is taken on a regular basis to one of the LINK pantries on the campuses of one of the member churches. This food then is packed up based on the families' needs and delivered to their homes. Some of you have helped in the past with this. Thank you! We need drivers for this month’s deliveries, Tuesday-Friday evenings or early Saturday afternoons. You would be sent an email the evening before with your clients’ information, and you would let them know when you can deliver the next day. Then, the day of the delivery, you would pick up the already packed items from the LINK pantry and make your deliveries.

November Link Deliveries: We will be serving families in our area by delivering food donations on the evenings of November 8th and 16th. This is a fantastic opportunity for our young people to serve Christ in our vulnerable brothers and sisters. We are always looking for more drivers to help. Adults must be child protection compliant. If you are able to volunteer for a few hours for this important outreach, please contact us at [email protected]. Homeless Outreach: Parish youth are collecting donations of 2 specific items—personal hygiene wipes or baby wipes, and foot powder—to be delivered to the homeless in Manassas during some outreach activities in November and December. Donations are needed by November 5th and can be dropped off in the wooden boxes in the vestibules. A Special Friday: On November 10th, youth in grades 6-12 are invited to join us for an afternoon of visiting and bringing joy to residents of a local nursing home. If you're off from school, come and join us! We will gather for 12:15 Mass, have a quick lunch, and then head out. We will return by 4:00 pm. Additional adult volunteers (child protection compliance required) are welcome. Everyone should bring their own lunch. To sign up, turn in a permission slip by November 6th to the parish office. No IGNITE: In observance of the holiday, we will not have IGNITE on Friday, November 10th. Our next gathering is Friday, November 17th at 7:30pm. Pillows for the Homeless: On Sunday, November 12th at 1:30 pm all youth in grades 6-12 are invited to join us for an afternoon homeless awareness project. We will be tie dying pillow cases and putting them on big beautiful brand new pillows that will be delivered to the homeless living in a local tent city at the end of the month. $5 donations are requested to help cover the cost of materials.

Join us for a night walk through the cemetery and along the grounds of the Seton Shrine in Emittsburg, MD as we pray for the living and the dead. Dinner at a local restaurant, transportation, and the saint walk included. The evening also includes prayer time before the Blessed Sacrament, small group discussions and hot chocolate!
